"Drood" by Dan Simmons

So, has anyone else read it ?
I'm two thirds of the way through and I think it is brilliant!
I read one of his others, " The Terror", recently and had one of those fantastic moments when you look at that helpful list at the front of the book and find that the author whose book you loved has written masses more....straight on to the library catalogue to order !
Anyone else ?

I really liked it, but wish I'd read Moonstone first as Drood gives away the twist in Moonstone!

Ah yes, it does go into loads of detail about plotlines etc, doesn't it ? That is annoying, I'd be riled if I hadn't read it myself already.
The Moonstone is excellent, too, isn't it ? One of my all time favourites. Because of Drood, I've got an urge to read anything and everything that Charles Dickens or Wilkie Collins ever wrote..although I think I'll be seeing Armadale etc in a different light now re: opium use !

I quite liked it. The ending was a bit of a let down, but having thought about it a bit more, I don't see how else it could have ended.

Definitely read "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons.

Right, just finished it last night and I completely agree about the ending..got to last page and thought "eh? Is that it?" I appreciate that it couldn't have been really conclusive, considering the revelations (whether true or not) in the last bit, but even so...Still thought the rest of it was great though!
Thanks for the rec for "Hyperion", will be next on my list. I've heard it's quite different in style to Drood, will be interesting to compare.

Try "The Terror" as well, Orm. It's about the Franklin Expedition - the one that Dickens and Wilkie Collins write the play about in Drood. So, so good, I can't even begin to say how great it is.
I do love a good "historical/based on factual events/but with a little bit of the unexplained thrown in" read, me. Niche market, I know, but Simmons has cornered it!

Dan Simmons is such a brilliant storyteller, and he has interesting stories to tell.

It's hard to read book club crap like Memory Keeper's Daughter and 1000 Splendid Suns when you know of writers like Dan Simmons.

Agreed, CoteDAzur! The Hyperion series is brilliant. I read them 10 years ago and have been feeling the urge to read them all again, if I get the time..
