anyone read / reading this? am struggling, don't think it is up to her usual standard although it is quite different. more in line with Gentlemen & Players, but that pulled me in quickly and this one is leaving me cold right now.

is it worth continuing?

I liked it in the end, and took a while to get into it as well. It's def not her best though it does pick up (or did for me once I got used to the writing style)

MaPrentice · 04/08/2010 16:41

Well there's a few hours of my life I'll never get back. It did pick up but I spent most of the book being either confused or bored.

Did anyone actually get what was happening, and if so, did you even care?

EricNorthmansmistress · 17/08/2010 11:05

Oh no it was rubbish wasn't it! Complete let down. JH is one i always buy in hardback every time she has a new one out - but this was exactly that - boring and confusing. I turned over the last page thinking 'huh'? and am still none the wiser.

Just found this thread.

Glad it's not only me. About a third of the way in. Have no empathy or interest in any of the characters. Like MaP, I'm a bit confused too. The one thing that has kept me going is that the blurb promises an interesting plot twist at the end. Is it time to give up?

I started it last night- read 3 chapters and gave up.
It's going back to the library tonight!

Just been looking at reviews on Amazon. Seems to be a bit of a marmite love it/hate it book.

Some reviewers also mention that Joanne Harris struggled with the plot and had to do some rewrites.

One for the charity bag I think sadly. Shame as I've enjoyed all of her other books.
