The Passage, Justin Cronin - anyone read it?

Is it as good as its meant to be?

It caught my eye in Waterstones today, but God its big. Is it a hard read? Is it scary/depressing? I couldn't finish The Road even though I thought it was good as it made me feel sick, is this likely to be the same?

Was hoping to reserve it in the library but I can't, worth paying £10 for? (When did books get so expensive).

I'm on page 555 at the moment. It's a huge read. Not too hard, I think I like it, I'm still reading anyway. It's bloody heavy though!

Was just about to start a thread about it !

It is brilliant

Absolutely engrossing, not too difficult but complicated enough to keep your interest

I am notorious at chucking books down after the first couple of chapters, but I can't wait to get an hour to myself to read some more !

I'm just under half way through. I can't say its the best book I've ever read, but its enjoyable (plus I have it on my e-reader so no weight problems there!

I've read more now. On page 650 now! On the last stretch and the end is in sight. Even DS1 is excited that 'mummy has nearly finished her very, very big book'.

I'd say I'm glad I paid £10 for this in Tesco. But it's not going to enter my top ten of all time super duper books ever. It might get in the top 500 though!

I think so (although I said to DH 'don't read it' but he takes for ever to read a normal-sized book!). If you read a lot and you like vampires (except Twilight - there's no hot vampire love in this one) / horror / sci fi or will read just about anything (that's me) then yes. Also if you read quite quickly and have time to really get into a book then yes again. I did enjoy it and I am glad I read it but I was reading it in such tiny chunks I found it quite hard to keep the momentum until the end when I was reading it at the same time as playing with the DSs / walking to the shop / cooking tea, etc.

I kind of miss it now I've finished.

Well I've managed to reserve it in the library but I'm 17th in the queue and there is only one copy. So hopefully I may get it in 2012. I think I may weaken by then and order it from Amazon.

Wow! That's just too stressful. I'd rather get it for £10 from Tesco and have it to read now. It might end up cheaper - given all the stress caused by waiting for it from the library - all the extra chocolate you might eat, coffees / glasses of wine you might drink (whatever is your favourite tipple), etc, coping with the waiting and the stress, and all the less-worthy books you might end up buying to get through the boredom of waiting. Go on! Buy it!

I also have a library copy but it's only a 2 week loan, there is no way I'm going to finish it in time

so may have to buy it....

I've caved in and got it from Tesco this morning. I have 3x big library books I need to finish first though.

Well I've just finished reading it, only took me 3 days to read it as I couldn't put it down. Thought it was fantastic and am sad that I have to wait 2 years for the next one in the trilogy.

Yep, 2nd book to be published in 2012 and then the third (last) one in 2014.

I'm on page 300 and loving it. Not a difficult read, but really keeps your interest. DH and DD both read it on holiday and I lost them both for three days each while they were reading! Didn't know that it was part of a trilogy- will make my DS's day when I tell her!
