Help me out here - am I going mad?

At the denoument of said book the detective bursts into the abandoned house to find that the perpetrator has shot off his own head and is, therefore, dead. He then kicks the body just to make sure.

Next chapter. Perpetrator is up and walking about taunting the detective about the fate of his daughter and is shot by the detective, eventually dying in a big fire.

Exceedingly annoying and frustrating. I've been back over said chapters about four times and come to the same conclusion each time - rubbish author and rubbish editing.

Or have I missed something????

You've missed something.

The body is wearing the perps clothes but is in fact one of his victims.

To Hannahsaunt, this is Jilliane Hoffman, the author of Pretty Little Things. I just spotted your query and thought I'd clear up any confusion (hopefully without spoiling the ending for anyone). Beware, anyone who did not read the book. When Bobby Dees enters the home and sees the body of a person dressed in suit wearing Mark Felding's ID badge with his face blown off from a shotgun blast, he believes the person to be Mark Felding. Later, he enters the crawlspace and sees Mark Felding there with Lainey. Obviously the body upstairs was not that of Mark Felding. So who was it? When Zo comes to the hospital and sees Bobby, he tells him that they found two bodies in teh home. One was Mark Felding, found in the crawlspace, and the other was that of a female found in the parlor, with a shotgun lodged under her body. Felding had dressed up one of his victims to look like him, then shot her, so she would be unidentifiable to Bobby, and he would naturally think it was Felding who was dead. Sorry it drove you crazy!
