Read it a long time ago - really enjoyed it but remembered loving The Secret History. I do like the main character in the Little Friend though and the whole gothic, Southern weirdness of some of it.

I really enjoyed it - haunting; the sort of book that stays with you.

That bit with the bird and the hot tar on the road is one of those images that pops into my head just to freak me out.

Yes it's the Southern stuff I love- it could be set in any timeperiod.
I haven't got to the bird and hot tar yet, Anonamouse.......

I've just read Pat Conroy's South of Broad, which is very southern- wonderful

same here, loved it until I got to the end which made me feel like I wish I hadn't bothered.

I read it a few years ago. I don't think I'll ever read it again, but certain parts, such as the snake being dropped onto someone's car, have made a real impression
