Annoyed with myself, why can’t I stop?

I don’t have a huge amount to lose, just half a stone, but I’m short and it makes a big difference on me.

I have so many healthy habits. I do intermittent fasting, I have a very healthy vegetarian diet at mealtimes. I cook from scratch and my meals are balanced and not that calorie dense. I go to the gym 3x a week and try to walk 30 mins on the other days. If I just did that, I’d hit my goals.

But, mid afternoon and after dinner I have such a bad snack habit. On an average day I might have a few biscuits, maybe some crisps and a few squares of chocolate, basically enough to put me over my calories for the day. And I can’t seem to stop. I KNOW I should make healthier choices, I have healthier options available but I don’t choose them. Not having them in the house isn’t easy as other people live here too! Why can I not just stop doing it? I would hit my goal in no time, but something just stops me every day.

You need to up your protein to prevent snacking.
And get rid of the snacks, it’s better for the others too.

Stylestuck · 23/10/2023 09:14

Yes I probably don’t get enough protein. I sometimes struggle to fit it in.

I now have a protein shake after each gym session, as I was absolutely ravenous and ate anything in the cupboards to get rid of it.

I make lentil bread to stop snacking and it really works.
Recipe on youtube and internet.
Its very heavy and packed full of protein.
I cut it into protein bar sizes and freeze it as it will not last more than 4 days in the fridge.
I'll eat one with butter and hummus. It takes ages to eat as it's almost solid lentils and really fills that snack hole.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/10/2023 09:41

You could also have it with peanut butter.

I know the feeling of being appalled at yourself even while you are shovelling crap into your mouth, but you can’t stop.

I don’t think that just increasing protein is a magic bullet, you can be over-snacking out of habit.

Something that helps me is to physically remove myself from the situation. So instead of sitting at the kitchen table to eat my 2 biscuits with my cuppa I will take them to another room, upstairs is best, that is away from the biscuit tin. Otherwise it is too easy to have just one more.

Also, you can get into the mindset that the biscuits/ chocolate or whatever, are just not yours to eat. I bet you could walk into a supermarket and not rip open and eat a packet of biscuits off the shelf, because those biscuits are not yours.

Diet culture causing binge eating disorder. You are restricting yourself all day only to binge at night.

I’m like this too! I only have 5 lbs to lose and also have the body type where the slightest bit of weight really shows. However, I just can’t do it! I HAVE to eat a dessert type treat everyday otherwise I genuinely feel sad, and I’m sure it is this causing me to maintain rather than lose. Going to try be really tough this week and perhaps do a YouTube Pilates video before bed instead of snacking so that I form a new healthier habit. Maybe you could try the same?

I like this idea! I’m going to try and make a loaf now!

I found myself in a similar situation and really resonate with how you are feeling and what you are saying. I felt so frustrated, I felt like I tried everything to stay committed to my goals but I just kept self-sabotaging.

My friend recommended me a Health, Nutrition and Wellness Coach that she had been working with. I’ve had three sessions with her and it’s been amazing! She is so understanding and supportive and has helped me to make lifestyle changes that are helping me to achieve my health and weight goals. She works with a holistic approach and is also a counsellor so I have been able to understand why I kept ruining my weight loss attempts in the past. I finally feel like myself again 😊. I would recommend her to anyone and she offers really affordable rates. Health Nutrition and Wellness Coaching with Couselling
