@effiesgoldwig ...two dress sizes is fantastic..well done...imagine two more...you'd be a 14 !
You can do it.

@Zebracat ...good luck with surgery. Try to find things to distract from snacks...maybe learn a new language 😄

Zebracat · 10/07/2023 17:53

I have no talent for language acquisition whatsoever. But I will read a lot.

I’m 40 and 5ft 5” and it’s capped me at 1200 calories too.

I was pretty horrified when I realised how many calories are in a cup of tea 😂

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/07/2023 18:32

@MyTruthIsOut I would focus just on your calories to start with but you’ll quickly start to realise that some things are a lot better value (calorie wise) than others! Goes without saying that green veg is bulky for not many calories, meat is high calorie but some meats are much more calorific than others. Different fat contents in mince for example can double the calories of a portion! And if never fails to amaze me what a tiny piece of salmon you get for 200 calories (having salmon tonight, totally worth it 😋) I’d just plan your meals and weigh everything and see what you find out this week!

Calories in a cup of tea..?

Hang on, just putting my lalala I can't hear you headphones on!!

There will be no calories in tea in this house. Milk will be ignored 😄

Theredjellybean · 10/07/2023 21:51

Ignore at your peril
I used to just take 50 calories of daily allowance for milk...cus really a splash was all I had .I reconded I used 100mls all day
Then one day I measured it..I have 100mls in every coffee...and that is not a milky latte...think more a cortado.
I drink six a day...that's 300 calories straight up

😂😂

I drink oat milk…..I’m not sure if that’s better than semi skimmed milk or not 🤷‍♀️

Ive only had one cup of tea today, which was prior to downloading this App, and since then I’ve just had very dilute squash 😂

I’ve had about 1’150 calories today so I’m happy with that.

My next step is to join the gym….

TalkToTheHand123 · 10/07/2023 23:08

A massive fail tonight, but made a couple of tubs of salad to get back on the wagon tomorrow. 😊

MyTruthIsOut · 11/07/2023 08:33

What does everyone eat for healthy snacks?

One of my biggest issues is portion control and I’m really trying to work on this, but because I’m having smaller meals I’m getting hungry again quicker.

My usual snacks would be biscuits, lol, but they’re a definite no-no now!

PinkArt · 11/07/2023 09:37

Not healthy healthy, but grapes, pretzels and popcorn are my current go tos for things that feel treaty without being too calorific. I'd love to migrate to things like carrot sticks but this is a good middle ground to get me away from things like all the biscuits without feeling too joyless.
Less healthy, but controllable, are fun size bars. They're all roughly 100 calories so I know the 'damage' but have still had a treat. I think the mini bags of chic chip cookies, party rings are similar if that would give you a yay biscuits hit without having an entire packet?

Zebracat · 11/07/2023 10:44

My friend swears by hard boiled eggs. I love carrot sticks, celery and radish. But I also love an M&S iced spiced bun, not healthy at all. We’ve had some twix minis, and I’m getting freddos for next week. Sometimes have some Greek yoghurt or a couple of walnuts, with apple or berries.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 11/07/2023 10:56

At work if I need a sweet hit I have a meringue, 50 cals and they are so sweet one is enough!

Sometimes I crumble it in an activia vanilla 0% fat yoghurt, they are 60cals

I'm sure the sugar content of those 2 is off the scale however!

Wafer thin sliced ham or chicken isn't too bad if I'm passing the fridge and must shove something in my mouth. Or hard boiled egg as previously mentioned.

Also for a sweet something I sometimes have a boiled sweet - I only take 1 or 2 to work though otherwise I'll eat the lot.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 11/07/2023 10:57

Sorry just realised the brief was healthy snacks!

Carrot sticks in that case 🙂

MyTruthIsOut · 11/07/2023 11:39

I opted for one of my children’s Fromage Frais yogurts. It was 44 calories which I suppose isn’t excessive but I still feel guilty.

I’m just so desperate to lose weight 😬

You have frightened me into measuring my milk!

I have put 300ml of semi skimmed in a jug so I will see how much I use.

Can see me switching to water/diet coke in the afternoons very soon 🙂

Ledochas · 11/07/2023 21:01

Just read through the last two days of updates and the thread is so apt. I have had a big wake up call. I measured every single thing I ate today. I was underestimating loads of things. Eg coleslaw... my normal dollop is 75g, not 30g as I was guessing! Grated cheese similar... cream... the list goes on. Eek!!!! Explains lack of loss!!

MyTruthIsOut · 11/07/2023 22:14

I’m curious as to how quickly people notice a weight loss?

Over the last three days I’ve averaged at 1’150 calories a day and I plan to continue on this way on the feeding regime I’ve come up with.

Sadly I don’t have the opportunity to do a lot of exercise (health reasons) so I am relying solely on reducing my calories.

I’m not expecting to see any significant loss within the next or so due to not being able to do exercise alongside the dietary changes.

Or should I still expect some weight loss?

PinkArt · 11/07/2023 22:39

@MyTruthIsOut It'll depend on your height and your starting weight. A stone is usually where I notice some changes but two stone is more likely to be when others notice. I'm currently 17 stone though and when I was around 10-11 when I was younger I think half a stone could look quite different.
1150 is a very low calorie count for the day, most advice is that 1200 is the absolute lowest an adult woman should go to. Make sure you aren't pushing your body into starvation mode.

effiesgoldwig · 12/07/2023 07:33

@MyTruthIsOut you should still lose weight if you're sticking to a reduced calorie intake even if you can't exercise. I imagine after a week or so you'll notice the scales starting to move, but I always say look at the month not the week as there will inevitably be fluctuations in your weight for other reasons.

Vebrithien · 12/07/2023 07:57

Well, good morning!

It's been a bit of a week. After hurting my ankle last Wednesday, it ballooned on Thursday, so my work first aider sent me off to Minor Injuries for x-rays. Thankfully not broken, but some nasty soft tissue damage. Have a huge boot to haul myself around in, have been exhausted.

So I've had no running all week. Managed to head out this morning, but was very slow and gentle.

Also had a very swish afternoon tea to go to, and have still used food like a crutch (emotionally and literally) this week.

So, all in all, am happy to have maintained at 90.1kg this week.

On the plus side, I've had a couple of friends comment this week on how I look healthier and slimmer.

I have just over a week of term left. I would love to be in the 80's for the start of the summer holiday.

Theredjellybean · 12/07/2023 12:36

Starvation mode is a disabused myth.
If you are eating low calories your body doesn't "hang on to them " because it thinks you are starving it.
The amount of calories you need to maintain or lose is very individual and often grossly over estimated.
You need to consider...how much you currently weigh, how tall you are, your sex, your age, your activity level + how quickly you want to lose weight.

So for example I'm 54, 5ft 3, 71 kgs, menopausal, sedentary job but some activities...I do my own cleaning, walk dogs, take stairs etc...I want to lose a kilo a week so 1200 is max daily calories to achieve this.
If I was happy with 0.5 kgs a week I could have more calories.

I find MFP is pretty accurate at telling you how many calories you can have once you put in all the details and set how much you want to lose per week.

I’m 40 years old, about 5ft 6” and my weight is 68kg (About 10st 10lbs I think?)

Although I can’t get myself to the gym I do about 2 hours worth of fast paced walking every day so hopefully that might help.

Ideally I want to lose 1.5 stone in order to get back to my usual weight (before I started to let things slide).

I’m just so shocked when I look at the calorie intake of what I used to have and how casually I would eat those things without a clue as to what they were doing to my weight. I used to try and find various reasons for my weight gain but now I can totally see it was all down to what I was eating.

I dread to think how many calories I was taking in each day 😬

TalkToTheHand123 · 12/07/2023 20:38

Third day in a row of eating sausages and burgers. Hoping today was my last!

Been for a swim today and will be going again tomorrow. I overdid it a bit today so need to learn to pace myself.

Caught myself in the mirror a couple of times this week and noticed being a bit slimmer so quite pleased.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/07/2023 20:59

I had a bit of a rubbish day, I’ve been really suffering with anxiety this week. I do suffer with it and every now and then it hits a peak and I lose my shit, then I rein it all back in again and calm resumes. Today I was determined I was not going to get really bad again so I called the doctor and had a phone appointment, she’s referred me for loads of tests and it sounds like if they come back clear for things like perimenopause and thyroid, they will refer me for some therapy and maybe give me some medication. However, as a result of this conversation and general feeling crap, I haven’t exactly been on track today.
Actually , my food has been ok, there’s just been rather a lot of it. But that’s ok. I didn’t resort to biscuits or chocolate even though I was upset after talking to Dr and felt generally quite tired and weepy all day. I did go to the gym this morning, and then once dh got home I went for a 5km walk with a podcast .

tomorrow I am hoping I’ll feel a bit better. I’m about to plan all my meals, dh is away tomorrow night so it’s an opportunity for me to have a really light dinner and an early night, two things I never get to have! I’m going to try to squeeze a short run in the morning before he leaves.

Theredjellybean · 12/07/2023 22:20

@thenewaveragebear1983
I'm really sorry to hear your struggling with this.
You always sound so on top of things
Do consider medication..it can be such a game changer...and your running is such a good endorphin booster and so good for anxiety.
You are not alone , come tell us about it anytime.
And well done on the insight to know you need help and you didn't see the chocolate biscuit as therapy!
