Getting into running- come and join me!

Hello, I'm on my 3rd week of starting to run. I thought I'd start a general encouragement/ support thread.

At the moment I'm doing run- walk- run- walk and I can't run a whole km yet, but in 3 weeks I have definitely improved. My first goal is 5km. Then- who knows?!

I am finding it hard, but dare I say enjoyable. I charge my ipod up with stuff that I like (rather than nursery tunes) and off I go. My only free time to run is early in the morning: I have 2 small DDs. And the early start means that I don't bump into too many friends . Also it means my halo positively radiates for the rest of the day ! I'm going 3 mornings a week at the moment.

Are you up for it?

I jogged round and round the rose garden in the park near ds' school again. Very nice just after the rain, because the roses smell delicious. I like the sound of the groups people are recommending, but think I need a bit more speed/fitness. Gimme a coupla months.

just back from the gym, feeling quite smug seeing as I did a 14 hr night shift last night and I'm on nights again tonight! Just a quick 25 min speed session but it was quite enough for one day (and burnt 300 cals too!)

Hi can I join in here please? I actually bought running shoes today and I am at the point of wondering when do I actually put them on and go. I dont have motivation in abundance so before I start I am already thinking I may fail at this.....

claireb1974 · 09/06/2010 19:35

I have done it!!!!! I have been for a run well more of a run/ walk...........ok more walking than running but at least I got out there. I did 2 miles in 22min and am going to work on improving that time. My legs were killing me, mainly my right one. Hopefully that will improve.

How is everyone else doing?

FGM · 09/06/2010 20:18

Great to hear of everyone's runs- whatever the level. Keep it coming. My next is Fri am.

Hugga- I like the sound of roses after the rain. The fun bit on my route is going past the duckings. I saw a crane (bird) too this am.
Claire- well done remember "from tiny acorns do mighty oak trees grow" etc... When will you go again?
Gem-v impressive, considering shifts.

Who was asking ab playlists? I've got "safety dance" Men without hats, "all the single ladies"Beyonce, "not myself tonight" Christine aguillera, "Bad Romance" La Gaga, "sweet disposition" temper trap, "she wolf" shakira and more beyonce & Gaga.
I did get a compilation "101 Running songs" but it was all naff 1980's throwback stuff- not my cup of tea!

There are also lots of podcasts out there for couch potato to 5km that tell you when to run/ when to walk. Some have music behind them, but I haven't tried them. Happy to push myself at my own pace for the moment.

I can't wait for my run tomorrow : ) well done to those of you who have already been!

FGM · 11/06/2010 06:56

3rd run in a week for me- I feel I've won a little mental battle there.

Although it didn't go too well- cold wet and miserable , then I got STITCH . Anyone know what to do about this?
Then my ipod ran out.

I'm looking forward to 2 mornings off now until next run Mon am.

Hi all, I've not been able to post for a while as my daughter has been ill, we're just back from hospital now so looking forward to getting back into the swing of things (don't worry, its not serious just an ongoing condition which still requires intervention). How are you all doing now? How are you finding the heat? Any plans for how to keep momentum up over holidays? I went to California for work (sounds glamorous but wasn't much glam) a few weeks ago and I found that all good intentions about swimming everyday and going for a run on the beach was put to shame. I'd like to blame jetlag but must admit its probably down to getting out of the routine... So basically I'll be more or less back to square one now given the weeks which have passed without running... och! On a happy note I've finally ordered a heart monitor and so I'm looking forward to getting to grips with that!

Hi Snuppeline, I'm sorry to hear about your DD. I'm glad you are still up for it. Breaking news...

I DID THE RACE FOR LIFE TODAY!!!!
I DID IT!

The Cambridge 5K event- it was great.

I hadn't told anyone in RL because I was so scared of failure/ people laughing at me/ the look on their face saying "you can't do this". I know- serious self doubt issues! And also because I lost both parents when I was young to cancer- this was a really big thing for me to do. Oh, and I was always the fat kid at school too! I cried buckets before the start and at the end.
But I DID IT!

I ran the first km, and then ran/ walked the rest. Total time 38 mins.

The camaraderie was great- many women just like me doing run-walk-run walk. I'm not afraid to do it again.

I'm determined to run the whole event next year. So back out on Wed am to get fitter...

Please keep posting. I like not being the only one!

Congratulations on your run!!! Fantastic! Even more special as you did it for your parents and for yourself. I wasn't particularly slim at school either but slimmed down when I got to uni as I got really into sports there. Your time was amazing, well done! I'd like to do it too and was looking into it this year but chickened out so fair play to you for sticking it out.

If I'm on off this thread its just because I'm not able to be online as often as I normally would be right now - I will get back to you though!
