Been going to the gym for 3 weeks now and haven't lost an ounce! Wish I'd never jumped on the stupid scales now

Haven't changed my eating habits as am away from home and skint so can only afford what I can afford IYSWIM.

I'm really disappointed as I've been working really hard

I know I'm definitely fitter as can do so much more - I started off only being able to do 10 minutes on the Crosstrainer and now am going for 40, so am pleased with that, but I'm 18st 8lbs, so I REALLY need to shift the weight.

Just a rant really but any advice would be more than welcome

10 mins up to 40 mins is really good. And you know that muscle is heavier than fat, right? A better test than the scales is whether your clothes are fitting you any better.

WishYouWereMine · 17/05/2010 15:41

Clothes are definitely looser, which is why I was expecting to see a difference in the numbers. And I think my waist has shrunk a bit, but it's so difficult to tell when you see yourself every day!

That's a really good sign. Don't worry too much about the scales. If you're really keen to record your progress, you could get a tape measure and track your waist, arms, thighs, etc. And as you've already noted, it's encouraging to track how much more exercise you can do. That's great progress!

WYWm you have to start eating lesss for weightloss

SuSylvester · 17/05/2010 16:44

i dont see how being broke means you cant eat less

msboogie · 17/05/2010 16:45

yeah, you do - what you need to do is reduce your carb intake

can you tell us what you eat?

might be able to suggest ideas for you

Joby1970 · 17/05/2010 16:47

list what you are eating & we'll see if we can give you any pointers. for me it's waht I look like in clothes not wwhat evil scales say. I've been told load of times that I look at least a stone lighter than I weigh so I don't let numbers bother me. deffo measure yourself.

WishYouWereMine · 17/05/2010 21:45

Ah.. I eat hardly anything (due to being broke!) so if I eat any less, I will eat practically nothing!

I have a small portion of cheerios for breakfast, generally skip lunch or have some more cheerios, then have some pasta and chicken for dinner. Unfortunately I have to fry the chicken because I don't have an oven or a grill, just a hob.

I think I might not be eating enough?

Am I doing enough in the gym do you think? I tend to do at least 45 mins of cardio each day and then some weights.

Thanks for your help

you are eating crap! Buy a bag of salad, some tuna (tinned ) and some dressing, hey presto a healthy salado. Cheerios are not a main meal choice! you could ahve some with your tea then too.

beans on wholemeal toast would be a good choice

omlette

Oh and you could poach the chicken in a pan if you wished....

WishYouWereMine · 17/05/2010 22:01

Eeek Thanks Cyb.. I didn't think it was that bad .

Will try some of your suggestions - can you poach chicken from frozen? Am in Europe so fresh meat is veeery expensive, and resent paying €2 for a tin of baked beans.

I realise I sound like I'm making excuses. I thought that I might have lost a pound or two just from exercising (was very sedentary before) but never mind.

take your chicken out of freezer before work, keep in fridge it will defrost ready for poaching for tea!

Joby1970 · 18/05/2010 08:20

you could make a veg bolonagnese sauce - that would be cheap & last a few meals - what about tinned sardines/mackerel (in spring water or brine) on your toast
