HI. I'm new to this topic but have decided that I definately want to lose weight to feel better about myself - am recovering from pnd and am sure my feelings about my weight don't help. Anyway, want to lose about 2 stone ish - maybe more - and will prob use SW principles as that's what I know. Anyone want to join me in charting progress and sharing successes/struggles? I don't want to shell out for weekly meetings but need the support and mortivation of people sharing the journey with me.

I'll join you. I want to lose a stone as my BMI is 27 at the moment. I am going to try and exercise. Cut out desserts apart from fruit and no eating after dinner. How old is your baby?
My children are both teenagers .

justwhen · 17/05/2010 13:48

Hi, I'd love to join you too! I really need a big kick start and lots of motivation. I suffer from depression and have been on AD's for a long time. My 3dd's are now 4, 7 & 10.
I need to lose about 2 stone but just to make a start I would be so pleased to lose anything!

tibni · 17/05/2010 14:29

Hi can I tag along too.

Motivation is what I have seriously been lacking. I am not big but I am aware that my weight is gradually increasing. Normally i'm a gym bunny but over the last month or too I have not been making time to go - yes I have 2 part time jobs, dcs and my youngest with severe ASD, a 9 month old puppy and a house that im desperatly trying to keep on top of but I need stop making excuses and get focused.

Yesterday I went to the gym and my gym trousers were tight - always my first sign of extra weight. Not sure what I weigh but at a guess I need to lose between half a stone and a stone and get that tone back. I had decided this first thing today so this thread has come at the right time for me.

GypsyMoth · 17/05/2010 14:41

i'm lurking,if thats ok!!

lost half a stone of a 4 stone total to lose. been low carbing, but kind of fell off the wagon! back on it now..

tibni · 17/05/2010 15:01

wow! 4 stone is a brilliant loss, well done.

Well I have text dh to say im going to the gym tonight. Planning on doing a short run and then cross train. It is well within my capacity but I need to build my fitness up again - the reward after is the steamroom. My MP3 is charged and I am going to pack my gym bag then I will have to go!

Food wise I have not snacked at all today. Cereal for breakfast and poached egg on toast for lunch. Im veggie so I don't really think low carb is an option.

I know the first few days will be tough as my body gets used to the changes. Im working the next 2 days so I will be careful what food I take with me.

ohsomuchtodo · 17/05/2010 16:24

Hi all,

Thanks for the great response - I was beginning to think that I would be doing this (and failing!) on my own again!

My dcs are 11 years and 15 months and pnd hit me in mid Jan after ds2 had had a sudden stay in hospital over Christmas.

I would like to try to do something about the reasons I eat the wrong things and often at the wrong time and if any of you feel like sharing that it might prove helpful... I really want to make it work this time so think I need to do some soul searching as well as some habit changing. I think I tend to eat the wrong things because I don't make time to prepare healthy things (although I do for my baby!!) and also because of boredom/bad habits in the evening - not that I get the time to be properly bored but you know what I mean (I hope!). Ie on the computer so munching on something... cup of tea with a biscuit or three etc...

Personally I know I need to eat a good breakfast, bigger meals and less snacks and do more walking. What about you?

I really hope we can become friends and share the ups and downs in this. I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to weigh myself and share it on here but it might prove to be a good motivator!

Good luck and here's to a new slimmer us! x

Hi ohsomuch, yes I know what you mean about eating the wrong things for the wrong reasons. I think I'm an emotional eater and once my 3dd's are in bed I just think it's my right to relax & have 'me' time with wine & cheese usually being my downfall. Usually I do eat a very healthy breakfast & lunch but by the evening it has normally gone pear shaped. Breakfast is mainly porridge with fruit & seeds. Lunch may be a salad or ham sandwich. Then in the evening, well anything could happen!
Have you any idea what you weigh? I'm also scared to actually get on the scales

GypsyMoth · 17/05/2010 19:32

i prefer to go by clothes...if they feel looser then its good enough for me!!

but i do weigh.

need to step up the exercise really. should be out more as weather improves...and yes, wine and cheese!! must stop that habit

tibni · 17/05/2010 22:51

I have been pondering my weight issues and trying to work out the reason behind them and im really not sure.

I have never been really big and have been size 10 - 12 since my teens. At 5ft 7 I have the height to carry a little extra weight. Up until a few years ago everything seemed right and I didn't seem to have extra weight although at that point I was a size 12. Now I am a 10 (in danger of creeping back to a 12) but I don't have the tone and don't look as good - now this could be an age thing (im 38) im really not sure.

About 2 years ago I pushed to lose weight and went down to a 10 (even had 1 pair of 8 jeans) and I felt healthy and not sluggish but since that point I have fluctuated and can't seem to get a balance. I can be greedy with portion size and I tend to let myself get too hungry and then when I start eating I just don't stop. This happens often in the day when I get home from work in the afternoon, dash to take the puppy out before the dcs get home and then end up demolishing anything I can find because I am too hungry.

If I was to offer 1 piece of advice it would be that we should all be drinking - lots (and no not just wine!). We can often mistake hunger for thirst.

kingprawntikka · 18/05/2010 09:28

Hi everyone, really nice to see so many of us to support each other. I am a size 14, (edging towards 16 if we are being honest!) I am a SAHM and I tend to start well each day but then pick at chocolate and biscuits . I also eat too much on an evening , which is why one of my rules is going to be only eating fruit for dessert weekdays and no eating after that on an evening!

I weigh 10 st 5 , but am only 5ft 1 tall so I can't afford to carry the extra weight.

Three years ago I lost one and a half stone, through diet and exercise, but then had an accident and damaged the discs in my neck. This is an on going issue and I find it hard to exercise with out causing a flare up and then being unable to carry on. This is the main reason I have put the weight back on.

I am going to try exercise again, but be more aware of my limitations and miss out or alter any parts that involve jumps or impact.

I have done the Angela Griffin DVD twice this week and feel ok. If any of you have a good exercise DVD that is low impact let me know please and I'll get it.

I read something on here once , can't remember who said it but basically she said that instead of thinking whether you are full or not, you should think whether you have had an adequate amount for your body.
I think often when you eat out of boredom or routine being hungry or full doesn't come into it and so that is something I am trying to remember.

ohsomuchtodo · 18/05/2010 16:44

Hi again. It's so great to read everyone else's experiences - so reassuring that it's not just me! I don't think it matters what size we are (I'm a 14-16 but at 6ft can carry the extra weight without people really noticing) it's how we feel that counts and if we feel that we would like to lose weight then we should start... I think I am going to record on here how much I lose weekly - looking for 2-3lbs per week - ansd hopefully others will do the same and we can share tips.

I didn't eat after dessert last night - though it was Ben and Jerry's lol - and I didn't miss it. I think I 'need' something sweet so dessert is probably a better idea than a bar of chocolate - as long as I watch my portion sizes! I too have the problem where I eat very little all day and then am starving in the evening! I know it's not good for me and really want to address it.
I'd really like to start going to an exercise class to motivate me and to help with the toning but I'm not sure how practical that is at the moment.... perhaps I should invest in a dvd too - can anyone recommend any more?
How's everyone's week started?

OP posts:
scattercushion · 18/05/2010 17:00

I'd like to join you too - I'm trying to lose a stone of baby weight but not having much joy despite going for a run three times a week and swimming once! Argh it's so demoralising stepping on the scales and seeing either no change or one week putting ON a pound after all that effort....

My downfall is like everyone else's - eating too much in the evening. I'm still breastfeeding and I have what feels like an insatiable appetite that isn't satisfied by my evening meal. I spend my evening rustling about in the cupboards . I'm trying to snack on healthy stuff but I guess 100 rice cakes adds up.

kingprawntikka · 18/05/2010 17:52

I find a packet of boiled sweets helps me with the 'need' for something sweet ohsomuchtodo.
I have a rhubarb and custard sweet or a pear drop after lunch quite often to take my mind of cake!!. The good thing is they take a while to eat if you suck them.Well done with the Ben and Jerry's!.
The Davina DVD'S are good and are arranged in sections so you can fit it in with how much time you have.

Six foot tall must be nice, I can't even reach things in my kitchen cupboards if they are on the top shelf !

scattercushion even if you aren't losing weight you will be toning up and getting fit, but it is demoralizing isn't it?

ohsomuchtodo · 18/05/2010 21:28

hhmm... I might well try the whole boiled sweets thing - though I will only have one at a time, obviously!! I can't have sweetener so anything 'bad' I have has to be the real mccoy - no diet coke or muller lite for me

what are everyone else's goals then? I'd love to wear a size 12 dress to my brother's wedding in september...

scattercushion are you recording inch loss as well as weight? That might be a little more motivating. Your exercising puts me to shame!

OP posts:
tibni · 18/05/2010 22:58

My goal is to get toned. I store weight around my middle (and have a strong family history of diabetes so am aware of my risk).

As a measurable goal I want to get back into my size 8 jeans as I know I look best at this size (8-10). I want to avoid becoming fixated on the scales as I know I am prone to going too drastic in order to see the number reduce and then don't maintain longterm.

kingprawntikka · 19/05/2010 08:28

My goal is to be a size 12 and fit into a nice swimming costume when we go on holiday in the summer.

scattercushion · 19/05/2010 19:39

You're right about the toning/inch loss as I've already noticed that when I stand with my feet together my calves and thighs don't touch any more - thanks for the boost! Mustn't be too obsessed with the weight... I don't own scales as know I'd be hopping on them every five mins so I go to boots for a weigh-in every week.

Having boasted about the exercise regime I now can't make swimming tonight and am going on holiday for a week on Friday... However I will follow a healthy eating plan whilst away. I plan to go on the seafood diet - yes, see food and eat it, boom boom.

I fancy a pear drop now!

On the plus side, just come back from a kiddy's party and managed NOT to snack on the food, even though it was a mega-deluxe cupcake-bunting spread...

kingprawntikka - I bought a slenderizer type cossie from Lands End, v spendy but it sucks you in, pushes you up and all sorts! It does give me a back cleavage though which I'd like to dispense with.

Ohsomuchtodo - why not tell us your ideal dress for bro's wedding and we can hunt for one.

Sithmummy · 19/05/2010 19:50

I've been lurking round the diet threads, looking for inspiration but I know my head's not in the right place at the moment and failure is something I can live without. But I wish you all the best and am sure you can do it with each other's support.

scattercushion my midwife told me the best thing to eat is any cooked fruit, from stewed apples to christmas cake. It's more readily used for quality milk and so doesn't get stored as fat by your body. No idea if it's true but I lost weight steadily while breast-feeding and didn't suffer that all-consuming hunger too often.

Good luck, everyone

mummymels · 19/05/2010 19:57

Hi everyone, do you mind if I join you?

I've been dieting since October and have so far lost 64.5 lbs. I was really pleased with myself at how well the weight was coming off and how well I was sticking to the diet and how easy I was finding it. However, the last couple of weeks I seem to have become a bit complacement and cheated quite a bit and I really want to get back into it again and get my last couple of stone off to get to goal. This week I have been good again so I am going to try really hard now.

kingprawntikka · 20/05/2010 08:38

Hi Mummymels, that's a fab weight loss , very impressive! don't spoil all your hard work now! I know its hard to keep going sometimes but you have achieved so much since October.
Come and join us all and we'll keep you motivated. What made you decide to lose weight?

For me it's a combination of things, I want to be fitter, I am sick of having clothes in my wardrobe that are too tight and I think the older you get the harder it seems to be to lose weight so I should just get on with it, and I think it would be better for my health in the long term to have a lower BMI.

Scattercushion very good resistance at the children's party, I went out for with a friend yesterday but ate a bagel and tuna rather than a cake when we stopped for a drink and snack. I was quite pleased with my self until I looked on the Bagel Nash website and saw that my little bagel had 440 calories!!
Enjoy your holiday- was going to say are you going anywhere nice , but then I thought you are hardly likely to be going somewhere horrible!! Hope the weather is good for you .

tibni · 20/05/2010 08:53

kingprawntikka - I agree that shifting weight is harder as you get older but it is possible.

Well so far im doing ok. I discovered that one of the ladies who I work with runs a slimming world group and she talks of how she has always done really well then gone on self destruct and the weight goes back on. She now aviods "diet products" and tries to eat basic, unprocessed food as much as possible and not to over stress about food and it seems to have worked. I like that philosophy as I have the tendancy to be very strict with myself but then go off the rails.

I have managed 3 gym vists so far this week and will try and get another visit in. Food has been ok - I have not snacked but I am making sure I am eating enough. Often I struggle the first few days but I have been ok so far.

How do you all feel after your first few days? Or for those who are continuing their good work, how are you doing?

kingprawntikka · 20/05/2010 09:02

I think I am doing ok, I haven't snacked apart form having a couple of crackers with sliced meat at 3.30pm because my teenagers usually get in around then and eat something, and we don't eat dinner til seven so it's a long stretch between lunch and dinner.I haven't eaten at all after dinner and have stuck to my rule of only fruit for dessert during the week.
I have done an exercise Dvd twice and will do it tomorrow as well. I have gone for a 30 minutye walk after dinner with my husband each evening.
My parents are visiting today, They live about 70 miles away so I will have to resist the chocolate fudge cake that's for dessert. I might allow myself a glass of wine with dinner though!

kingprawntikka · 20/05/2010 09:06

That doesn't make sense does it. What I meant was my parents can't just pop in as they live a good one and a half hours drive away so when they come I make a nice meal and dessert for their visit.

scattercushion · 20/05/2010 10:06

knew what you meant, though, kpt! I resisted doritos and those mega-posh balsen choc bix that are more choc than bic at a boring meeting last night. Maybe this thread could be called Vive la resistance what with all this resisting. how did it go with the dessert?

Mummymels - how many stone is that? Enough for your own beach, it sounds like! Well done from the rooftops!
tibni - I keep eating weightwatchers yoghurts/fromage frais even when I'm not hungry because they are only 50 calories each. Think I'll stop buying them.

sith mummy - raisins are go!
