Started healthy eating in the last few weeks and lost 7lbs already this week I started exercising properly and weight has stayed the same despite eating same stuff etc, is this common and how long will it take to see a difference again?

Congratulations on your weight loss. Make sure you are drinking enough water as your increase in exercise is probably causing your muscles to retain water. When you do new exercises and things your muscles are unaccustomed to this can cause some swelling and tightness in your muscles which is due to a temporary build up of fluid that the muscle is holding. Try drinking more water to help combat this. Also, throw away the scales and just concentrate on how much better you are feeling when you are eating well and doing some exercise, the numbers are irrelevant. When they are going down they are a great motivator but when that stops happening it can make you wonder why you're bothering.

Oh, and make sure you are eating enough on the days that you are exercising. On the days I weight train I am meant to eat an extra 300 calories or so. If you are eating less and exercising more than it can have a negative impact on your metabolism and will slow down your weightloss.

I tend not to lose a lot of weight when I'm exercising a fair amount, but people always say that I look like I have as my body shape changes. I'd like to find a way around this, too - but I think it's just because I get so hungry and don't eat the right things. You sound like you are better at that than me!

Also, there is a week a month that my weight goes up 3-4 lbs due to water retention and bloating. When I'm losing weight, it doesn't go up that much and then dramatically drops the week after.

I am on this week actually, had forgotten t hat in itself can make a difference, am drinking plenty of water as it's only that and the occasional decaff tea or fresh fruit juice I am taking.

Hopefully next week it'll sort itself out when my body gets used to actually working ;)

Try the 30 day shred, the weight will fecking fly off Only joking. Well done on the weightloss though!

My weight can tend to actually go up 2 or 3 pounds if I exercise a lot, but the difference in my shape and size is amazing, especially if I include weights. Only when I run quite a lot does my weight go down, but it doesnt seem to make much difference to my overall shape iykwim. Id stick with the exercise and within a couple of months you'll see difference, particularly if you include weights as well as cardio. What sort of exercise are you doing?

Cycling and jogging. What is 30 day shred?

Its an exercise DVD by Jillian Michaels, who is one of the trainers on Biggest Loser usa. I usually stick with Davina, but after hearing some good reviews on here, I thought I'd give it a go. Its only 20 mins, but its HARD, and your supposed to do it everyday for 30 days. Its a combo of weights, cardio and abdominal work. Davina Fit is also good, and some parts are focused on weights which is also good for changing your shape

thanks, not my kind of thing really, I have to b outside to exercise, I know I wouldn't have discipline to do a dvd off my own bat

I didn't realise 30 day shred was only 20 mins... right I can fit that in to my morning schedule easy!!!

babyball · 18/04/2010 12:35

The 30 Day Shred is closer to 30 mins with the warm up and cool down but definitely worth doing. It is a killer though, and I have only started doing the first "easy" workout. I am determined to be able to do proper press-ups by next month. Feel the burn!!!
