I'm in!

Total novice, started running last week, looked like a galleon in full sail. Managed 10 mins each time. And not all of that was running.

OnlyWantsOneFartleBerry · 24/01/2010 22:00

YAY hello

I only started out on friday -

I will be running every other day, the same local route to me which is 1.8 miles, which I do in 20 mins, running and walking

When I did it today I saw a remarkable improvement all ready

Making myself do it, even though I look like a right tit.
going for 20 mins tomorrow
good luck
will check in in a few days!

Fruitgums · 25/01/2010 12:30

Hi

I'm starting running in Feb - joined a beginner's running course!!!

It's more walk than run intially but this is what I need as I'm very unfit.

Hope that we can all keep on going!!

OnlyWantsOneFartleBerry · 25/01/2010 13:00

today is my running rest day, but have just done the body scuplt work out DVD with Davina McCall - feel pooped now hope you all have happy runs

Thanks for redirecting me Fartleberry. I managed, er, nowt yesterday.

I just did a 10 minute or so run though so I've finally made a start- hoorah!

Hello to everyone else.

GettinTrimmer · 25/01/2010 15:54

Hi I'd like to join too.

In the past I did the Great South Run and 10K runs (not very quickly!) and I've started doing about 2 miles, run, walk, run. Also want to lose 2 stone, and I know that running just burns those calories.

Nice to meet some fellow runners!

OnlyWantsOneFartleBerry · 25/01/2010 16:11

YAY hello all

do you think on a Monday we should set some weekly goals?

I would like to run every other day, Tues, Thurs, and once at the weekend (this week) and aim to get back to 9.6stone not, 10!

loobs2 · 25/01/2010 16:45

Hi everyone I run regularly and think it's a great way of both burning calories/fat and getting fit. If you're new to it, though, please take care not to overdo it - 3 times a week is ideal, but with rest days in between, so you don't get injured - your muscles need that time to 'repair' and recover.

OnlyWantsOneFartleBerry · 25/01/2010 16:56

Loobs - when, if following a sensible eating plan, will I start losing some pounds and toning up if I run 2 miles, 3 times a week - or do i need to run more?

loobs2 · 25/01/2010 19:05

I reckon within a few weeks - certainly in a month- you'll notice a difference, both in terms of your weight and your fitness.

GettinTrimmer · 26/01/2010 10:54

Hi all

I went running yesterday so I am having a rest day. Also planning on alternating with spinning and aerobics.

How's everyone doing?

queenofeastsheen · 26/01/2010 21:23

I managed 15 mins of mainly running.Ipod helped a lot.

I may tell St John's ambulance that they needn't follow behind with stretcher next time.

It's getting easier!

OnlyWantsOne · 26/01/2010 21:45

Hey all, After I took DD to nursery I went home and did 2 miles in 20 mins, mainly running / very speedy walk

Feels good also, day 4 no smoking!!

mrswill · 26/01/2010 22:10

Hello all,

Can I join too. I used to run quite a bit for a few years before DD, mainly because I found it helped with my mood when I was going through a very difficult time, and was brilliant to pound out my frustrations on the road! I lost lots of weight when I was doing this even though it wasnt the primary reason to run, and actually had to watch my weight didnt go too low (no such problems now!)

Ive been exercising in the house, doing interval training by skipping etc to get me fit enough to begin running again.

Going to begin tomorrow morning before work.

Are we setting up goals etc. Im going to do 3x per week, and have got to think of a good route round where I live!

OnlyWantsOne · 27/01/2010 08:37

fab welcome MrsWill

dinkystinky · 27/01/2010 08:55

Ooh, can I join too?

Am trying to get into running again - did some running back in 2005 and did a race for life - when it turns out I was already pregnant with DS1 (didnt know at the time). Then got back into running in 2008 and did another race for life - when it turns out I was already pregnant with DS2 (didnt know at the time). Now going to try to get into running again - but avoid doing race for life this time - to see if I can manage to run 5k without getting preggers as a side effect

OnlyWantsOne · 27/01/2010 09:07

lol

gladders · 27/01/2010 12:59

am a regular runner too - this all sounds v positive - think 3 times a week is definitely the ma you should do to start with - and run/walk is a good idea to ease yourselves in.

on the losing weight thing though - a word of caution - you burn roughly 100 calories per mile so with these low mileages, weight loss won't happen through running alone. am speaking from bitter experience!

but reduce your calories and do some running/aerobic activity and the weight will come off yes.

best of british!

dinkystinky · 27/01/2010 13:54

Right - just been to the gym and ran 4k (and hill walked .6k) in 35 minutes in my new running trainers - amazed at what a difference properly cushioned trainers make! Though dont remember being this sweaty last time I took up running...

Am aiming to run 2x a week as I do a few other exercise classes a week already

GettinTrimmer · 27/01/2010 14:02

dinky - I need to get myself a new pair of trainers. Can I ask what make yours are?

dinkystinky · 27/01/2010 14:04

Asics Gel-Kayano (as mildly overpronate when run and they are a good supportive trainer) - got them from Sports Direct (which is an uber-grim store) for only £55 in the sale (usually over £110) as they're last season's colours apparently. Would recommend getting to a specialist running store to try out some then going online or to sports direct or the like to get the trainers for alot less money...

OnlyWantsOne · 27/01/2010 17:01

dinky, well done you thats fab!!

OnlyWantsOne · 27/01/2010 17:01

I havent been running or any thing today, Wednesdays are my dad at home with DD - wh00p (which is lucky because its cold and grey and wet outside)

Hopefully sunier tomorrow

loobs2 · 27/01/2010 17:53

I've been a fan of Saucony Progrid shoes for years - now I know how good they are I buy them online as you can get really good deals. Try sweatshop.com or sportsshoes.com - but I agree with dinkystinky - only after you've been to a specialist running shop to get advice on what type of shoe you need - it's the most important bit of kit if you're running regularly.
