Well, I went running this morning, at a very early hour, may I add. I used to love running on a summers morning before everyone else was up and would enjoy the peace and quiet, but winter doesnt have the same feel! I only did 2 miles, and did the walk, jog thing, but was due to be in a training group at 9. Ive planned a very hilly route by me, and dont have much other choice, its all hilly in Wales. What times do others go running? What sort of routes do you follow, parks or the streets?

dinkystinky · 27/01/2010 21:22

Cheers onlywantsone - felt all energised as a result of doing the run. - aiming for another short run on Friday or Sunday I think. I agree with Loubs though about building up - started at start of january with running for only 15 minutes then building up to 20 then 25 each time I run..

Supercherry · 28/01/2010 14:04

Hello everyone, you're all putting me to shame as I haven't ran since I last posted. It's hard, I have a toddler and a 3mth old baby, I'm breastfeeding and my XP, who I remain on good terms with doesn't get back from work until 7pm usually which leaves me really struggling to find the time to run!

I think I am going to buy a treadmill so I can still run on those days where I have no-one to watch the boys.

If we are aiming for 3 runs a wk, I only have to squeeze in 2 more. Would it be OK to run sat AND sun do you think?

loobs2 · 28/01/2010 15:50

Supercherry - so impressed that you're up for running when you're probably at the very little sleep at night stage ! Ideally you wouldn't run 2 days in a row but if you're keen to get 3 sessions in by the end of the week and those days are your only chances to do it then as long as you don't push yourself too hard - particularly on Sun - you'll be OK. If you do a few mins of stretching exercises when you get home to stop your muscles seizing up and getting sore that will help too.

queenofeastsheen · 28/01/2010 16:21

Am hitting the pavements again tonight- did 15 mins last time and am hoping to improve upon that time by 5-10 mins.
Have Ipod, now have sports bra.
Am looking forward to the endorphin high I had on Tuesday.

Good luck my fellow runners!

kansasmum · 28/01/2010 16:33

I have decided to start running too. I am EMBARRASSINGLY unfit but gotta start somewhere!

I am just finishing a course of antibiotics for throat infection so once those are done I will be running!

I have a Beginner's Guide to Running book so will start the walking for 2 mins /running for 1 minute plan! Assuming I can actually RUN for 1 minute! I might require oxygen and paramedics after!!

Good luck everyone!

OnlyWantsOne · 28/01/2010 18:01

Hey all

had a really shit day in court over my DD and XP so after vomiting in the court house, decided not to plod/run tonight

Instead, going to run for 3 miles to my nan's tomorrow, have a nice cuppa, then run back

I fucking hate life some times

Naetha · 28/01/2010 19:55

Hey folks, mind if I join you for this one

DD is 8 weeks,DS is 2 and I am NOT a runner, but I figured now would be as good a time as any to start.

I'm going to start nice and easy, and I'm going to sign up for Race for Life 5k in June which will give me something to aim for. I've done bits of running in the past, but never really stuck it out.

Hopefully I can get at least one, hopefully two evenings a week to go for a 45 minute ramble around the streets, and then rely on my Davina DvD and general P&T lugging to get me the rest of the way!

Any other complete non-runners starting out?

OnlyWantsOne · 28/01/2010 20:20

Naetha - if you set goals, and really try to stick to them, you'll get there

I'm pretty much starting out from nothing too feel better all ready though

dinkystinky · 28/01/2010 20:41

Onlywantsone - sounds like you've had a pretty tough day. Bet your run tomorrow will make you feel more energised and hopefully happy too.

Naetha - as your baby is only 8 weeks, make sure you've been doing your pelvic floor exercises lots before you start running and take it really easy. When I started off - and was not a runner at all - in 2005 I used the running made easy book to start out. Its a really good way as is run/walk combos and gradually building up your run time and length of runs.

Supercherry · 28/01/2010 21:09

Thanks Loobs, I'm really lucky in that DS2 sleeps well during the night, we're co-sleeping. I will have to just go for it sat and sun to catch up, I will take it easy though. The minute my stomach muscles start hurting I will knock it on the head for the day.

Onlywantsone, sorry to hear of your troubles.

Hello to those who have just joined the thread

Pre-children, I was a regular runner (3 miles, 3 times a wk), fan of exercise DVDs and the gym, now I have a wobbly stomach and inner thighs and a bright red face after 10 minutes of exercise! I'm looking forward to getting my fitness (and toned bum) back.

queenofeastsheen · 28/01/2010 22:23

did half an hour- no pain, jusy kept going.
very happy- getting much easier, can't quite believe it.

although my shoulder aches a bit now!

OnlyWantsOne · 29/01/2010 12:26

Im thinking of buying an exercise bike so I can do it in evenings when DD asleep.... thoughts ladies please?

loobs2 · 29/01/2010 13:29

OnlyWantsOne - save your money! Absolutely everyone I know who's bought one has abandoned it within weeks - usually ends up in the spare room, shed or garage! If you want to do something other than the running, a much cheaper option would be to invest in a fit ball, maybe a couple of hand weights, and a book called Exercise Ball for Weight Loss by Lucy Knight (your library might have it - ours has) - it's got great exercises in it that will tone you up and really help your running too.

dinkystinky · 29/01/2010 14:45

I'm with Loobs Onlywantsone - an exercise bike sounds great in theory but ends up being a very big - and expensive - paperweight. Can you do exercise dvds at home to increase your cardio capacity (Davina ones are good as interval training based) - all you need is a couple of free weights and some space?

GettinTrimmer · 29/01/2010 18:46

I went running on Monday, didn't manage to get out again until today. Did about 2 miles walk/run/walk.

How's everyone doing?

mrswill · 29/01/2010 22:36

Onlywantsone - hope your week has gone better!

I really wouldnt bother with an exercise bike, I used to have one and it did sweet FA although I chugged away at it for ages. Get a skipping rope and do interval training and some weights work instead.

Have gone running again today, and done some weights work after it. Can feel the usual feeling of wanting to 'do more' all the time coming on. When I used to run and exercise regularly, I was addicted to the feeling I got after a workout, especially if Id pushed myself to the limit, and used to take a long time to calm down and had difficulty sleeping as I used to be almost excited. Very weird. Think im going to change my workouts to the morning, so they'll give me energy throughout the day, and not disturb my sleep in the night!

queenofeastsheen - I have to say my Ipod is making a difference to my enjoyment of running this time.

Is everyone just running round the streets?? Or doing treadmill?

OnlyWantsOne · 29/01/2010 22:50

Hey - street running for me - no running machines. And yes re the ipod, have compiled a fab little play list, and worked it so the right tempo track comes on when i need that extra boost when I start to flag a bit.

Aim to run both days this weekend whilst DP is home, fabby!!

Hope you're all well

I've put on weight this week and saw my GP this morning, have been diagnosed with IBS, so least I know why I keep getting terrible bloating etc any one have any experience of this?

Night all x

dinkystinky · 30/01/2010 10:16

Am running on treadmill and street running MrsWill - we had snow last night where I am so will be no running today (am fairly rubbish at keeping upright on slippery surfaces, so running would be more like ice skating..) - see if it disappears today and will try to get out tomorrow afternoon when DH is back from business trip.

queenofeastsheen · 30/01/2010 15:36

out this morning for run-25 mins of mainly running. Didn't help myself by having a largish breakfast too near to run- very uncomfortable.

I too am on the pavements- with an inspiring playlist.

Well done all

Oh yes- re IBS- i keep on top of mine with peppermint tea and fennel tea.

good luck next week

Supercherry · 31/01/2010 20:45

Well done everyone.

I managed to do a Nell DVD today. Couldn't get anyone to watch the boys

I may have to get a treadmill at this rate so if anyone knows anything about treadmills then your advice would be much appreciated.

OnlyWantsOne · 01/02/2010 09:26

i would like to be able to run / cylce at home so dont have to leave DD and could do it in evenings when she's in bed.

Seriously, are they really a waist??

queenofeastsheen · 01/02/2010 14:02

My parents had a treadmill- turned into a dusty clothes rail through lack of use. For me I like to go out to exercise and not have the guilts that i must do the treadmill because I spent tons on it. It would really get to me if i under- used it. Besides, i like to come home knowing I've done what i need to and so the house is a place to relax.

Am going out running tonight- is anyone else?

good luck

OnlyWantsOne · 01/02/2010 14:09

Im going running tomorrow after my lecture, before I come home and collect DD

Supercherry · 01/02/2010 15:13

Actually, onlywantsone, I mentioned to you before that I would really like to run the London marathon, 2011. There is no way I could clock up those kind of miles without a treadmill to be honest.

I found lots of articles saying it is possible to train for a marathon on a treadmill. Some suggest the boredom aspect of treadmill training can better prepare you mentally for the marathon.

There are lots of positives to be honest, but for me, the main one is that without a treadmill I won't be able to go on many runs.

The only question I have now is which one?
