Right. It seems that most of us are going to be low carbing. However, please join us, even if you're following some other kind of plan!

From tomorrow, there are three clear weeks until the end of January, and the aim is to lose half a stone. Some of us may lose more, especially if we have a lot to lose, but half a stone is a good - and safe - amount of weight to lose in three weeks.

If you're low carbing, there are plenty of different plans around that you can follow. The three that I'm most familiar with are Atkins (of course), Charles Clark and India Knight/Neris Thomas. All of these books are definitely worth a read.

If you're thinking of starting off with two weeks of induction, Atkins-style, I thought the following might be useful, just in case you haven't got the book. This is a list of foods that are allowed during induction. (It's from the original Atkins, apparently, and I think things have changed somewhat, but this will give you a good guide for it; you might find it useful to print off and take with you when you're shopping:

"In addition to your proteins which are the focus of this diet you eat NO MORE THAN 20 GRAMS OF CARBOHYDRATE PER DAY. Your diet will consist of mainly pure proteins and pure fats and limited amounts of vegetables.

Eat liberally during Induction:

All fish
All fowl
All shellfish
All meat
All eggs

Mayo, vegetable and olive oils, butter, lard, dripping, poultry skin and meat fat

*Cheese (more recently limited to 100g per day)
Any full-fat, firm, cream, hard, soft or semisoft aged cheeses

*Fresh Double Cream (more recently limited to 3 tbsp a day)

*Nuts (more recently removed from allowable induction foods)
Almond, brazil, macademia, pistachio, pecan, walnuts.

*Count carbs from nuts, cream and cheese (if applicable) into your daily maximum of 20 carbs a day

Vegetables

You can have two/three cups(1.5lbs) per day of the following

sprouts
mushrooms
bok choy
peppers
celery
radishes
lettuce
romaine lettuce
cucumber
artichoke
celery
pumpkin
rhubarb (no more than 8ozs)
asparagus (no more than 8ozs)
chard
sauerkraut
bamboo shoots
collard greens
spring onions (no more than 8ozs)
snow peas (no more than 8ozs)
bean sprouts
spaghetti squash
eggplant
spinach
broccoli
hearts of palm
string or wax beans
broccoli rabe
kale
summer squash
brussels
kohlrabi
tomato (no more than 8ozs)
bean sprouts
leeks
turnips
cabbage
okra
water chestnuts
cauliflower
onion (no more than 8ozs)
zucchini

If a vegetable, such as spinach, tomato or onion cooks down significantly, it must be measured raw so as not to underestimate its carb count.

Salad Garnishes
crumbled crisp bacon
grated cheese
minced hard-boiled egg
sautéed mushrooms
sour cream
mayo
lemon/lime juice

Spices
All spices to taste, but make sure none contain added sugar.

Herbs
basil
garlic
rosemary
cayenne pepper
ginger
sage
cilantro
oregano
tarragon
dill
pepper
thyme

For salad dressings, use mayo or oil and vinegar (but not balsamic vinegar, which contains sugar) or lemon juice and herbs and spices. Prepared salad dressings without added sugar and no more than two carbs per tablespoon serving are also fine.

Artificial Sweeteners
sucralose (marketed as Splenda?)
saccharin
cyclamate and acesulfame-K
aspartame (in moderation)
certain sugar alcohols, such as maltitol, do not affect blood sugar and are acceptable.

Acceptable Beverages
Be sure to drink a minimum of 3 litres of water each day, including:

Filtered water
Mineral water
Spring water
Tap water

Additionally, you can have the following:

Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
Club soda
Coffee or tea
Diet soda
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories")
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carb per ounce); limit to two to three tablespoons

Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed.
Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in later phases.

Special Category Foods
To add variety, each day you can also eat 10 to 20 olives, an avocado, sour cream or double cream, as well as two to three tablespoons of lemon juice or lime juice. But be aware that these foods occasionally slow down weight loss in some people, and may need to be avoided in the first two weeks. If you seem to be losing slowly, moderate your intake of these foods.

Convenience Foods
Although it is important that you eat primarily unprocessed foods, some controlled carb food products can come in handy when you are unable to find appropriate food, can?t take time for a meal or need a quick snack. More and more companies are creating healthy food products that can be eaten during the Induction phase of Atkins. Just remember two things:

Not all convenience food products are the same, so check labels and carbohydrate content. While any of these foods can make doing Atkins easier, don?t overdo it. Remember, you must always follow The Rules of Induction.

ENSURE YOU EAT LESS THAN 20 GRAMS OF CARBS A DAY ON FOODS LIKE NUTS, SEEDS, AVOCADOS, SOFT CHEESES, CREAM AND SOUR CREAM, LEMON AND LIME JUICES AND LOW CARB DIET FOODS. CAREFULLY MEASURE YOUR PORTIONS!"

Hope this helps, and good luck to us all!

OMG Hinny - I am ROFL PMSL, that is the funniest thing I've read in a long time!!!!!!

HinnyPet · 16/01/2010 16:45

Dear me. I am still feeling traumatised by it.
I had 2 glasses of wine last night and two chicken fajita filled tortillas, so totally knacked the diet, but today I have been incerdibly dedicated, went to McDonalds and just ate the burger and the inside of chicken nuggets! Weight again on another set of scales and still 12st 4, so I will check tomorrow on my Mum's scales and see what's real, as I usually weigh in on those.

It's good when there are signs it's working, though!

Still 94, which suggests that the initial 'whoosh' was fluid loss, and now the real work of losing the fat starts!

Have been good and still haven't had a drink.

Today I have had:

breakfast - nothing to eat, as I was in a rush to get to college, but had a large takeaway latte (probably too many carbs, really)

lunch - green salad with bacon, pan fried peppers and courgettes, tuna mayonnaise, tomatoes and mozzarella and a hard boiled egg

dinner - left over roast pork with celeriac cauphinoise (which was lush)

Snack - handful of unsalted roasted nuts

That's mean of him!

It has been easier not having DH around this weekend, I have to say - not from the food point of view but from the white wine point of view!

Oh well done, Sal! You've done half a stone in the first week, which is fab.

Still 94 here. Woke up with a headache this morning, which was a bit odd - especially as I didn't have anything to drink last night!

Breakfast/lunch - woke up late! - was bacon and some celeriac dauphinoise (did I mention how fab it was?!).

We go out to dinner on Sunday, so not sure what it will be this evening.

One celeriac, peeled and sliced thinly (aim for slices around 1-2mm thick if you can - the final dish is better and is cooks quicker)

One onion, peeled and thinly sliced

2-4 cloves of garlic, chopped finely

cream
salt and pepper
couple handfuls grated cheddar

If you're at all anal, you will carefully layer celeriac and onion, sprinkling garlic and seasoning each layer. If you're not (and it works just as well!), just chuck celeriac, onion and garlic into a casserole dish, season and mix together with your fingers.

Pour cream (I used double cream thinned down with some milk - I think single cream is probably better for this recipe) over until it comes just below the top layer.

Cover the dish with foil and bake in the oven at 200 degrees (don't know what GM but probably around 6/7?) for around an hour or until it's cooked through. At this point there may be quite a lot of liquid left in it. Turn the oven down to 150, take off the foil and cook until the liquid has been absorbed/has evaporated.

Sprinkle the cheese on top and cook until nicely browned.

Well depending on the scales I use I have either lost 15lbs since the start of January, which would be amazing, but another set of scales say I have lost 7 lbs. I thought I was doing so well

I can't eat any less carbs! I am excersing once a week and will be taking up running this month too, why isn't it working?!

Fimbles5 · 17/01/2010 20:12

Hinny - It is working isn't it?? I don't understand, if you have lost half a stone since beginning of the month you are doing so fantastically well. 15lbs is even better but I would be over the moon to lose so much in such a small amount of time. I don't know much about low carbing but do you expect to lose more?? If so, I need to change diets as of now. Keep at it and chin up - you are obviously doing brilliantly. Well done you.

HinnyPet · 17/01/2010 20:20

Straight, Fimbles? Is that honestly good??

I was sure last time I did this I lost more weight very quickly, like a stone in a month. Guess metabolism might have changed since 2 DC's!
Thank you for replying

Hinny - you're using different scales at different times of the day.

You need to use the same scales and weigh yourself first thing in the morning, naked and after you've been to the loo!

Your weight loss is pretty good though - it is, after all, only 17 January today!

And don't cut your carbs more and more - you need to eat veg/salad to ensure that you're getting the vitamins that your body will need.

Above all (and I'm sure you know this!) you need to be patient. The weight will not drop off immediately.

It is working. You have been doing it for 2.5 weeks, and with that kind of weight loss already you can't possibly say it isn't.

OP posts:
BecauseImWorthIt · 17/01/2010 22:02

And think of it this way. You want to lose 2 stones by May. Even if you've only lost 7 lbs, that means you've already lost a quarter of what you're trying to lose.

If that doesn't work, just imagine 14 packs of butter. That is the amount of fat that you have already lost - as a minimum.
