Right. It seems that most of us are going to be low carbing. However, please join us, even if you're following some other kind of plan!

From tomorrow, there are three clear weeks until the end of January, and the aim is to lose half a stone. Some of us may lose more, especially if we have a lot to lose, but half a stone is a good - and safe - amount of weight to lose in three weeks.

If you're low carbing, there are plenty of different plans around that you can follow. The three that I'm most familiar with are Atkins (of course), Charles Clark and India Knight/Neris Thomas. All of these books are definitely worth a read.

If you're thinking of starting off with two weeks of induction, Atkins-style, I thought the following might be useful, just in case you haven't got the book. This is a list of foods that are allowed during induction. (It's from the original Atkins, apparently, and I think things have changed somewhat, but this will give you a good guide for it; you might find it useful to print off and take with you when you're shopping:

"In addition to your proteins which are the focus of this diet you eat NO MORE THAN 20 GRAMS OF CARBOHYDRATE PER DAY. Your diet will consist of mainly pure proteins and pure fats and limited amounts of vegetables.

Eat liberally during Induction:

All fish
All fowl
All shellfish
All meat
All eggs

Mayo, vegetable and olive oils, butter, lard, dripping, poultry skin and meat fat

*Cheese (more recently limited to 100g per day)
Any full-fat, firm, cream, hard, soft or semisoft aged cheeses

*Fresh Double Cream (more recently limited to 3 tbsp a day)

*Nuts (more recently removed from allowable induction foods)
Almond, brazil, macademia, pistachio, pecan, walnuts.

*Count carbs from nuts, cream and cheese (if applicable) into your daily maximum of 20 carbs a day

Vegetables

You can have two/three cups(1.5lbs) per day of the following

sprouts
mushrooms
bok choy
peppers
celery
radishes
lettuce
romaine lettuce
cucumber
artichoke
celery
pumpkin
rhubarb (no more than 8ozs)
asparagus (no more than 8ozs)
chard
sauerkraut
bamboo shoots
collard greens
spring onions (no more than 8ozs)
snow peas (no more than 8ozs)
bean sprouts
spaghetti squash
eggplant
spinach
broccoli
hearts of palm
string or wax beans
broccoli rabe
kale
summer squash
brussels
kohlrabi
tomato (no more than 8ozs)
bean sprouts
leeks
turnips
cabbage
okra
water chestnuts
cauliflower
onion (no more than 8ozs)
zucchini

If a vegetable, such as spinach, tomato or onion cooks down significantly, it must be measured raw so as not to underestimate its carb count.

Salad Garnishes
crumbled crisp bacon
grated cheese
minced hard-boiled egg
sautéed mushrooms
sour cream
mayo
lemon/lime juice

Spices
All spices to taste, but make sure none contain added sugar.

Herbs
basil
garlic
rosemary
cayenne pepper
ginger
sage
cilantro
oregano
tarragon
dill
pepper
thyme

For salad dressings, use mayo or oil and vinegar (but not balsamic vinegar, which contains sugar) or lemon juice and herbs and spices. Prepared salad dressings without added sugar and no more than two carbs per tablespoon serving are also fine.

Artificial Sweeteners
sucralose (marketed as Splenda?)
saccharin
cyclamate and acesulfame-K
aspartame (in moderation)
certain sugar alcohols, such as maltitol, do not affect blood sugar and are acceptable.

Acceptable Beverages
Be sure to drink a minimum of 3 litres of water each day, including:

Filtered water
Mineral water
Spring water
Tap water

Additionally, you can have the following:

Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
Club soda
Coffee or tea
Diet soda
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories")
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carb per ounce); limit to two to three tablespoons

Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed.
Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in later phases.

Special Category Foods
To add variety, each day you can also eat 10 to 20 olives, an avocado, sour cream or double cream, as well as two to three tablespoons of lemon juice or lime juice. But be aware that these foods occasionally slow down weight loss in some people, and may need to be avoided in the first two weeks. If you seem to be losing slowly, moderate your intake of these foods.

Convenience Foods
Although it is important that you eat primarily unprocessed foods, some controlled carb food products can come in handy when you are unable to find appropriate food, can?t take time for a meal or need a quick snack. More and more companies are creating healthy food products that can be eaten during the Induction phase of Atkins. Just remember two things:

Not all convenience food products are the same, so check labels and carbohydrate content. While any of these foods can make doing Atkins easier, don?t overdo it. Remember, you must always follow The Rules of Induction.

ENSURE YOU EAT LESS THAN 20 GRAMS OF CARBS A DAY ON FOODS LIKE NUTS, SEEDS, AVOCADOS, SOFT CHEESES, CREAM AND SOUR CREAM, LEMON AND LIME JUICES AND LOW CARB DIET FOODS. CAREFULLY MEASURE YOUR PORTIONS!"

Hope this helps, and good luck to us all!

Hi everyone - Very excited about first weigh in this morning, so thought I would start the ball rolling

Fimbles 95 (I lost 5lbs yippee!)

Would have liked more, but this is my second week and lost 4lbs in the first week, so still in the right direction. Also feeling quite premenstrual & bloated atm

BecauseImWorthIt · 18/01/2010 09:30

... in which case, bubble, you are quite justified in giving your weight as 94!

Would have liked more too (), but that is being unrealistic!

This week's goals:

  • Keep on with the low carb plan, with no cheating. (TBH, I'm still scared that I'll end up putting on weight - it seems so alien to eat fats on a diet)
  • carry on with doing my exercise videos (Davina is not as annoying as I thought she would be
  • keep checking in here to keep me on track, as I find it really helpful.

bubble2bubble · 18/01/2010 10:44

thank you BIWI - you are such a kind leader! and well done quibbler

Is anyone fantasising about what they will do when they lose the weight?
This week I think:
1.personal shopping day at House of Fraser
2.Day in a spa with pedicure/manicure, massage et al

Realistically though:
want to take dds swimming without thinking I cause a tidal wave
don't want be be the fattest mummy at the parent - teacher meetings

BecauseImWorthIt · 18/01/2010 12:24

Well done, quibbler! It does seem very strange to be able to eat all that fat, after years of being brainwashed that fat is the work of the devil! But it does work. And in fact, if you try to cut down the fats they tell you that it won't work. I can't remember why, but there are various threads about fat on both the low carb site and pig2twig about this.

AHEM

WilfSell: 93

Fuckety fuck. I can't believe it. I know it's supposed to be a quick start and all but I've lost half a stone in a week. I don't suppose it will carry on but it's very motivating. Don't have time to read thread till later but well done everyone who's lost and chin up and keep going to everyone who is fed up...

I am now back down to my lowest weight last year. I am bored out of my skull eating meat and greens but it is SO worth it...

Back later.

See! Told ya ...!
(Have you done a poo yet? That could be another half stone!)

And only another week to go re boring food.

Honestly, once past induction you will feel that the world is your oyster when you're low carbing.

And well done that man.

LOL - thank you BIWI, I know I have been silly!!
You know what, I don't even have any scales and I just weigh myself after sunday lunch at Mums house, so perhaps a trip to Argos is in order.

My DH is lying very wan and grey on the sofa, having picked up food poisoning on his trip to Paris.

Am I very wrong to wish it was me?! He hasn't eaten properly for two days and no doubt will have dropped half a stone.

Gosh, today is hard. I'm not sure why it hasn't hit before, probably because I've been chopping and changing. But I've been properly low carbing for a few days now, and I feel awful.

I've no energy and just want to lie down, not appropriate in the office, though
My appetite is really off. Couldn't face breakfast at all (I know skipping meals is bad, bad, bad, but I just couldn't do it) and lunch was a bit of a struggle.

I read in IPD that this tails off and gets better. Oh, I do hope so!

BecauseImWorthIt · 19/01/2010 14:44

It will, honestly. You will suddenly feel much more energetic.

Make sure you're drinking plenty. However, you should also bear in mind that you may need more potassium/magnesium in your diet. Lo Salt, an avocado and a good supplement will help.

OP posts:
TheQuibbler · 19/01/2010 15:03

Thanks, BIWI

That's a good idea; think I will pop along to Holland and Barrett and get a few supplements as I'm doing this for the long-term and this really doesn't feel right.

Very much want to do my workout vid tonight, but will have to see if I can muster up the energy...

Hope everyone else is doing well and hanging on in there.

HinnyPet · 19/01/2010 21:25

Am doing fine thanks bossBIWI! - I got in touch with a running trainer who charges £11 for a 1 hour session (think too expensive?) and he will teach beginners to run, but if I can get a local group together he'll charge £6 each. If I could just get going.

I have had an cheese omelette, decaf coffee with cream, quiche and salad (not the base or crust though , roast chicken, brocolli, cauliflower and sweetcorn today. Thinking the sweetcorn was a bad move though?

BecauseImWorthIt · 19/01/2010 21:53

I'm liking being called 'boss' or 'leader'!

Good idea on the running front. I've been toying with the idea, but haven't done anything about it

Food sounds good - sweetcorn not brilliant (although strangely baby sweetcorn is fine), but presumably you didn't have that much?

My DH has managed to lose 4lbs through being ill.

I wouldn't mind, but there's nothing of him anyway.
