Right. It seems that most of us are going to be low carbing. However, please join us, even if you're following some other kind of plan!

From tomorrow, there are three clear weeks until the end of January, and the aim is to lose half a stone. Some of us may lose more, especially if we have a lot to lose, but half a stone is a good - and safe - amount of weight to lose in three weeks.

If you're low carbing, there are plenty of different plans around that you can follow. The three that I'm most familiar with are Atkins (of course), Charles Clark and India Knight/Neris Thomas. All of these books are definitely worth a read.

If you're thinking of starting off with two weeks of induction, Atkins-style, I thought the following might be useful, just in case you haven't got the book. This is a list of foods that are allowed during induction. (It's from the original Atkins, apparently, and I think things have changed somewhat, but this will give you a good guide for it; you might find it useful to print off and take with you when you're shopping:

"In addition to your proteins which are the focus of this diet you eat NO MORE THAN 20 GRAMS OF CARBOHYDRATE PER DAY. Your diet will consist of mainly pure proteins and pure fats and limited amounts of vegetables.

Eat liberally during Induction:

All fish
All fowl
All shellfish
All meat
All eggs

Mayo, vegetable and olive oils, butter, lard, dripping, poultry skin and meat fat

*Cheese (more recently limited to 100g per day)
Any full-fat, firm, cream, hard, soft or semisoft aged cheeses

*Fresh Double Cream (more recently limited to 3 tbsp a day)

*Nuts (more recently removed from allowable induction foods)
Almond, brazil, macademia, pistachio, pecan, walnuts.

*Count carbs from nuts, cream and cheese (if applicable) into your daily maximum of 20 carbs a day

Vegetables

You can have two/three cups(1.5lbs) per day of the following

sprouts
mushrooms
bok choy
peppers
celery
radishes
lettuce
romaine lettuce
cucumber
artichoke
celery
pumpkin
rhubarb (no more than 8ozs)
asparagus (no more than 8ozs)
chard
sauerkraut
bamboo shoots
collard greens
spring onions (no more than 8ozs)
snow peas (no more than 8ozs)
bean sprouts
spaghetti squash
eggplant
spinach
broccoli
hearts of palm
string or wax beans
broccoli rabe
kale
summer squash
brussels
kohlrabi
tomato (no more than 8ozs)
bean sprouts
leeks
turnips
cabbage
okra
water chestnuts
cauliflower
onion (no more than 8ozs)
zucchini

If a vegetable, such as spinach, tomato or onion cooks down significantly, it must be measured raw so as not to underestimate its carb count.

Salad Garnishes
crumbled crisp bacon
grated cheese
minced hard-boiled egg
sautéed mushrooms
sour cream
mayo
lemon/lime juice

Spices
All spices to taste, but make sure none contain added sugar.

Herbs
basil
garlic
rosemary
cayenne pepper
ginger
sage
cilantro
oregano
tarragon
dill
pepper
thyme

For salad dressings, use mayo or oil and vinegar (but not balsamic vinegar, which contains sugar) or lemon juice and herbs and spices. Prepared salad dressings without added sugar and no more than two carbs per tablespoon serving are also fine.

Artificial Sweeteners
sucralose (marketed as Splenda?)
saccharin
cyclamate and acesulfame-K
aspartame (in moderation)
certain sugar alcohols, such as maltitol, do not affect blood sugar and are acceptable.

Acceptable Beverages
Be sure to drink a minimum of 3 litres of water each day, including:

Filtered water
Mineral water
Spring water
Tap water

Additionally, you can have the following:

Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
Club soda
Coffee or tea
Diet soda
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories")
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carb per ounce); limit to two to three tablespoons

Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed.
Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in later phases.

Special Category Foods
To add variety, each day you can also eat 10 to 20 olives, an avocado, sour cream or double cream, as well as two to three tablespoons of lemon juice or lime juice. But be aware that these foods occasionally slow down weight loss in some people, and may need to be avoided in the first two weeks. If you seem to be losing slowly, moderate your intake of these foods.

Convenience Foods
Although it is important that you eat primarily unprocessed foods, some controlled carb food products can come in handy when you are unable to find appropriate food, can?t take time for a meal or need a quick snack. More and more companies are creating healthy food products that can be eaten during the Induction phase of Atkins. Just remember two things:

Not all convenience food products are the same, so check labels and carbohydrate content. While any of these foods can make doing Atkins easier, don?t overdo it. Remember, you must always follow The Rules of Induction.

ENSURE YOU EAT LESS THAN 20 GRAMS OF CARBS A DAY ON FOODS LIKE NUTS, SEEDS, AVOCADOS, SOFT CHEESES, CREAM AND SOUR CREAM, LEMON AND LIME JUICES AND LOW CARB DIET FOODS. CAREFULLY MEASURE YOUR PORTIONS!"

Hope this helps, and good luck to us all!

Wow,that's pretty impressive - well done!

BecauseImWorthIt · 15/01/2010 09:13

Thanks. I do feel, though, that the hard work starts now. And I have a long way to go as my target is 70!

My interim target is to ditch the size 14 clothes I've had to buy recently, and to be able to fit comfortably into the size 12s.

OP posts:
bubble2bubble · 15/01/2010 10:12

Agree - it's the first part that's easy really and the immediate weight loss is so gratifying. The thought that I have to do this for probably another year is a bit .
But hey, I've had years of glorious carb fest, and it really hasn't done me any good at all.The future is definately a more varied and nurtient rich diet!

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo! to weighing before bed!

All you're doing is weighing you + what you've eaten and drunk that day!

Always in the morning, naked and after the biggest poo you can manage!

Clothes are difficult aren't they? On the one hand, I want to be comfortable/look half decent, on the other hand I really resent paying money for clothes I don't want to wear!

Hi all,

Quick check in between marking

I'm feeling better today, headache nearly gone so I am hoping I am one of those people who went straight to day 5 (which is supposed to be the worst day) on day 2! Or it could all go pearshaped tomorrow...

Another protein shake this morning. And am getting very confident round carbs. Leftover toast went straight out for the birds, and offered the kids a 'movie night' in tonight, with popcorn, knowing I'll be able to resist it. And I don't think I've been this long without wine for a very long time

But I'm beginning to feel good: period bloat subsiding, 'basement' (from the pig2twig site: heh heh) moving slowly but firmly and everything kind of 'even'. Which I like.

Have ordered some low carb cookbooks, including a veggie one as am not keen on meat coming out of my ears. I suspect large quantities of tofu and quorn maybe involved?

WilfSell · 15/01/2010 10:47

I have a fair bit more than most of you to lose but I'm kicking off with a first goal of 80ish, which will take me back to my pre-third pregnancy weight.

And then I'll regroup and try and move back to my best ever weight. IPD suggests staying on phase 1 until you only have a stone left to lose. Hmm. Not sure about that but I'm taking it a day at a time right now.

BecauseImWorthIt · 15/01/2010 11:05

Sounds good, Wilf. I have to say, from my own experience, that once you're 'in' the low carbing zone it is surprisingly easy. The difficult areas are when you have to eat out of the home.

Mostly I'm lucky, given that I work from home, but when I'm out and about for meetings it is a nightmare - either the travelling to/from, or the meetings over lunch which always involve sandwiches.

And I can't even blame my pregnancies for my weight gain. Prior to DS2 I weighed 9 stone 4. (74 in new diet terms!). Ten days after his birth I weighed 9 stone 4 ...

OP posts:
WilfSell · 15/01/2010 12:06

I work from home a lot too, and live very close to my office, so actually I'll probably try and pop back if I need to. Going to try and take stuff in though although some days it is just not feasible.

BecauseImWorthIt · 15/01/2010 12:44

One tip - if you're at all near a supermarket - is rotisserie chicken. Avoid the flavoured ones as they use sugar. Makes a nice change sometimes to have something hot.

Diet disaster here, checking in...

Well done everyone who has managed to start the diet and a huge congratulations to everyone who's already started losing weight, sooooo impressive!!

My week hasn't been too good unfortunately. Monday morning saw the arrival of AF 6 days early , a stonking headache, lightheaded blah blah blah and I didn't manage to stick to my diet, ended up on a chocolate binge and put on 4lbs in 2 days . I know some of that will be water retention from AF, but alot of it was definitely chocolate! Anyway, gave me a jolt and started back on IPD again Weds/Thurs but have succumbed to some carbs (mouthful of muffin one day, and hot cross bun last night) and today I have phase II of AF (at least it is how it would normally be on days 1-3 rather than day 5 TMI I know, sorry!!) and all I want is sugar, BIG TIME!

How does everyone else find low carbing when they have AF and how do you cope if you are totally desperate for chocolate/carbs etc??? HELP!!

Wow - you lot are doing so well I might have to consider trying this low carb lark (6lbs in five days) is fantastic. I have been plodding along and have managed to survive the week, but I know the weekend will be the challenge. PLEASE be here to help me through it - I don't want to spoil what I have done so far. Will weigh in Monday to update you all but looking forward to it. I have been so good (she says as she dusts off the halo), I bet it will be a different story next week Well done everyone.

tellyaddict · 15/01/2010 16:38

Supersal - I bought some dark chocolate at the beginning of the week (though not as high a cocoa content as you suggest) and I managed just a few squares on the first day, but then lost it!! I also had a whole sugar free jelly to myself last night with double cream - then had a hot cross bun!

It would seem that I need to go cold turkey too, anything sweet (even sugar free) seems to set me off lol!

Maybe I should count next week as my first week, AF week is probably the worst time to start.

Fimbles - you will be great this weekend, a good week sets you up well to not undo the hard work .

Good luck everyone with the weekend. How about a nice long walk, on our own - a quiet treat for us Mums of little ones!! Oh with a decaff coffee and double cream at the end , right that's my Saturday afternoon sorted whilst lo naps .......

BecauseImWorthIt · 15/01/2010 18:43

Have settled down with a glass of diet ginger ale instead of my usual botle glass of white wine. I had a bit of a wobble, and almost reached for the gin (we deliberately have no white wine in the house!), but stopped myself, and I'm feeling good about that.

Today:

cheese omelette for breakfast
leftover roast pork, with peppers and courgettes, with grated cheese for lunch
evening snack - unsalted roasted nuts

dinner will be the last of the chicken curry with whatever appropriate veg is in the fridge!

I appear to be doing well, was at a friends house with DCs today and nipped on her scales, weighed in at 12st 4 (on my Mum's scales last week I was 13st) so hopefully friends scales are accurate.

However TMI alert that weighing-in session was after a poo in my friends toilet that was so large I honestly had to beat it into submission with my bare hands -no toilet brush in sight and 4 flushes later it was gone!!!!

Gosh - everyone is doing so well with their weight loss! Congratulations! I hope I've got something good to report on Monday....

Gah - DH has just come home with his bag fall of our usual friday night treats, crisps, wine, chocolate ... It's no wonder the weight has piled on.

I've decided that it is NOT going to be difficult to resist whilst he is scoffing away. I'm choosing to do this and will be full of annoyance with myself if I undo the last few days of work.

Having a nice low carb chicken soup for dinner and lots of peppermint tea to aid digestion. Will feel v. virtuous tomorrow!

BecauseImWorthIt · 15/01/2010 19:47

OMG! And bleurgh!

Still, sounds like it was worth it...

Sal - I think gin and slimline will be fine (just remember that without the carbs you will feel the effect more quickly)

OP posts:
WilfSell · 15/01/2010 19:55

quibbler, that is exactly why I suggested to DH he do low-carbing with me: because I knew he wouldn't be able to stop himself bringing stuff home. He is quite happy to lose a bit around his middle.

Tonight we just had some sainsbury's chicken curry, but with no rice/naan. With saag paneer on the side. Very nice but I couldn't finish mine . It was pretty carby though looking at the label so I may well have gone beyond the 20g induction level today. Oh well. I'm still amazed at how this diet seems to have 'switched off' my cravings. I walked round the supermarket, clocking the wine and the Haribo and the chocolate. Not ONCE did I feel that 'awwwww, I've got to have some...' thing. I don't suppose it will last but it IS brilliant not to feel controlled by sugar. For once. I do hope I can keep it up. Or at least remember this feeling for when I inevitably fall off the wagon.

Sorry - that bleurgh was to Hinny!

DH has gone to Paris for the weekend, to watch his beloved Bath play rugby, and it does make life a lot easier knowing I can just make whatever I want to eat.

So. Have we all enjoyed our first week? it sounds like we're all doing well! Isn't it great when you have those cravings under control?
