Not sure about your link - it takes me to a Time article about Michael Jackson's funeral!

thanks for the link Eleanora. What a great article and it completely confirms my own experience.

Interesting article. My gran is in her late 90s, never went to a gym (of course), but was always very slim and healthy.

She didn't drive, was a product of low income and austerity and walked everywhere - even until a few years ago. She also qualified for the Olympic housework team.

I've recently stopped having a cleaning lady, cancelled my gym membership and now take the dog for brisk walks and put a lot of effort into cleaning the house instead. Saves a fortune and we get a cleaner house into the bargain - no-one was ever up to my exacting standards!

I'm watching what I eat quite strictly, and have lost 5lb.

I do also play in a sports team, but after matches we have a huge tea with cake - feeling we deserve it. That would definitely cancel out any calories burned.

thedailymailiscrap, I like your idea of housework aerobics!

I have at various times in my life taken up sustained exercise campaigns in an effort to help me lose weight.

I swam 5 days a week for an hour after work for a year.

I ran 5 times a week for a year.

I cycled 3-5 times a week for several months (still do but not so frequently)

None of the above made a jot of difference my weight, unless I also was strict about eating. In the year of running, the 3 friends I ran with also reported no weight loss

In my early 30s I did weights at a gym and this DID significanly improve my shape , but not my weight

I lost 2 stone at weightwatchers after my youngest chid was born without taking so much as a step of exercise!
