I am 10 pounds over what I would like to be
I do faddy diets and get back down to goal but then it all creeps back on.
But I just want to see what happens if I try to get my head around the whole weight issue rather than quick fix diets.

I exercise well.

So I have been 4 months into it and have stayed the same weight, still heavier than I like

I have tried to do this, and when I'm not 'on a diet' that is how I would eat trying to just eat sensibly and healthily.
But I never lost any weight doing that adn I think it's because I was still eating too many calories for weight loss. I was eating enough to maintain the weight I was at which isn't hard because you get used to eating a certain amount.

It's only when I really count how many calories I'm eating that the weight starts going.

Rather than do faddy diets, just try and eat like you are but have a look at how many calories you really are eating in a day, and if you keep a food diary for a week or so you can see where you're eating over.

I want to give it a year first and see if I can change my ways
