I used to run but now can't because of my knees hurting. Is the treadmil at a gym - if so switch to a cross or eliptical trainer instead.

Otherwise could you cycle rather than run or alternate.

no the treadmill is at home, but i really enjoy it, i go to the gym also and do 3 classes a week.

i have a cross trainer at home, but i am training and need to be able to run 3 miles for fitness test.

I don't run at the moment (exactly because I am so overweight I am concerned about my joints) but I used to run a lot.
You are doing too much too soon. But you are not alone nearly everyone does the same !!
Firstly it is not good to run on 2 consequetive days .You need to give your legs time to heal the little tears etc before the next onslaught.
Also you need to build up gradually to condition your legs.Start off with 20-30 mins 3-4 times a week and build up by no more than 10% per week.
I would not do any more til your knee is completely healed. Use RICE Rest,Ice Compression bandage and Elevation as much as you can and do some other kind of exercise instead.
I hope your knee feels better soon

Katiestar is exactly right, sounds like you've gone off too much too soon.
Are you wearing proper running trainers or just normal trainers, that could cause issues too.
