my friend is going through the menopause and has put on a lot of weight, she went to the Dr's who referred her to the gym for 3 months.

She said after the 3 months to come back and she would re-access. IF she couldnt get on with the gym etc.. she said there is a slimming pill that she could perscribe that really does work and shifts loads of weight.

Anyone heard of this?

Where?! Where!?
(Any chance pill tastes like a Snickers bar?)

CactusJack · 23/02/2009 21:58

there are a couple but they are only prescribed to obese ppl

CactusJack · 23/02/2009 22:04

what do you actually weigh DQ? and how much are you wanting to lose?

I have reasons for asking that are not what you think

CharleeInChains · 23/02/2009 22:04

How overwieght do you have to be to be classed as obese?

I want my GP to prescribe me the GYM as i can't afford the full fee's myself even better if there is a pill i could take! My mum takes prescribed slimming pills that make her not absord fat as much, it does work but she is pooing out grease {tmi} and isn't confident about farting lol!

CactusJack · 23/02/2009 22:07

i think if your BMI is over 30 but i am not sure tbh

eeek @ your mum charlee!

Ewe · 23/02/2009 22:08

I had a friend who was on that one CiC - it was hideous! She did lose loads of weight, just didn't want to leave the house in case the grease struck her.

Bleuurrghhh.

InTheScrum · 23/02/2009 22:09

My aunt had the greasy poo pills. She would barely finish dinner before heading to the bathroom!

I'm going to Docs next week to ask for a gym prescription.

SlightlyMadScotland · 23/02/2009 22:09

It is a diet pill pf sorts.

It causes severe abdo cramps if you eat too much fat (so therefore causes you to stop eating fat!).

As has also been said it causes fat to pass straight through.

There are 2 prescribable obesity drugs. Xenical (orlistat) prevents fat absorption, so if your mum is pooing grease Charlee she has too much fat still in her diet. The tablets prevent it's absorption, hence why she is pooing it out.

The other one is Reductil (sibutramine) which acts on the brain to reduce appetite. But it has to be closely monitored as it can have a ton of side effects.

They are usually only prescribed for very obese people with a BMI of 35+, or 30+ if they have for eg diabetes, heart disease etc. I doubt very much a GP would prescribe it without seeing evidence of some sustained weight loss through dieting and exercise.

CharleeInChains · 23/02/2009 22:15

My mum does eat a fair bit of fat so yes that is why, she is taking Xenical, she was told to loose wieght as she has a terrible heart condition, she isn't doing it. don't get me started.

My BMI is 29 i have dieted religiously but i just can't shift the wieght i don't know why!
I did well at slimming world but even when i continued to follow the diet the wieght pilled back on, i have always been heavy even as a child. Its so depressing.......
I would risk the greasy poo if it would help me.

Sidge · 23/02/2009 22:20

Don't do it!! And tell your mum off from me. There is absolutely no point her taking those tablets if she is eating high amounts of fat. You literally have to eat virtually no fat at all (any food item should have

CharleeInChains · 23/02/2009 22:25

TBH i don't think she takes them anymore.

I will talk to my GP but its the GYM im after becuase like i say i have truley stuck to a healthy eating plan and i excersise a reasonble amount and i am still a whale.

I know all about the poo my DS has CF and due to that is Pancriatic Insuficiant so he doesn;t absorb any fat so before he was diagnosed he would pass out nothing but grease and boy does that stain.........

Sidge are you a nutritionist or a doctor?

Sidge · 24/02/2009 15:19

I'm not I'm afraid, but I am a nurse. I used to be a practice nurse (am now a school nurse) with a particular interest in nutrition and weight management. I used to do a lot of work with people who needed dietary management for diabetes, heart disease, cholesterol reduction and general healthy lifestyle.
