apart from discolour your teeth? has it helped you lose weight? i think it does help me - it satisfies sugar cravings anyway. i could happily drink at least one can a day. how bad for you is it? anyone else find it quite addictive?

will be watching with interest asd my latest craving is bitter lemon (low cal!)

DevilsAdvocaat · 05/01/2009 19:53

it def helped me to lose weight. fills you up a bit between meals iykwim!

i tend not to drink it now though as it makes me feel bloated and makes my tummy stick out.

it def yellows your teeth too!

bran · 05/01/2009 19:55

I used to drink at least a can a day of Pepsi Max. I gave it up at around Easter this year as part of a general healthy eating drive and had dreadful withdrawal cravings. I lost weight steadily but at the end of the summer when DS was restless and demanding and ready to go back to school I went back to having one at lunchtime to get me through the afternoon, and I stopped loosing weight.

Now I find that if I have one it gives me sugar cravings, I'm really much better off without it.

modernart · 05/01/2009 20:01

I have noticed in RL that only fat people drink diet drinks. (Really sorry, you can flame me)

oxocube · 05/01/2009 20:03

I am size 10 and love Coke Light so poo to your theory modernart

bran · 05/01/2009 20:04

I don't find that to be true modernart. I think it's more noticable when fat people drink diet drinks, but the people I know who drink the biggest volume of diet drinks (as opposed to the occasional one in the pub) are all skinny and hyper people.

Yes, you're probably right, any fizzy pop is addictive so people can be any weight yet drink loads of the stuff. The skinny hyper ones are probably just as addicted to the caffeine/sugar buzz.

I was meanly thinking of the kind of person who has cream buns with a diet coke, or drinks vodka and slimline all night then has a kebab.

Dropdeadfred · 05/01/2009 20:15

i drink 6 cans a day every day

silvermum · 05/01/2009 20:51

ohmygod dropdead, that makes me feel a bit better! don't you need the loo ALL day?!
modernart i'm size 10 too so bollox to your theory! know what you mean though. it's a bit of a joke when people are in macdonalds ordering huge burger meals with fries and then order diet coke!
there is research to suggest that diet drinks kind of backfire by making your body think it's going to get loads of calories because of the sweet taste. then when the body doesn't get the calories it cries out for them all the more - meaning people end up eating more than they would if they hadn't had the diet coke. this sort of makes sense but perhaps once you know this might happen you can defy the cravings, IYSWIM.

My name is Dozymare and I am a diet coke addict. I am 5+ a day....trying to wean myself off though......

Tiramissu · 05/01/2009 21:02

Yes it fills me up that moment but makes me starving an hour later

silvermum · 05/01/2009 21:03

i'm still baffled as to how diet coke addicts don't spend the whole day on the loo?! respect! not only is it a lot of fluid, but it's also a diuretic because of the caffeine, sn't it, meaning it kind of rushes through your system. you ladies must have bladders of steel

Guess which Celebrity Big Brother housemate was just sitting on her bed, swigging from a 2 litre bottle of diet coke?

eekareindeer · 05/01/2009 21:12

I am size 14 and 20 - 25lb over weight and I'd no sooner drink a diet coke than put my head inside the open jaws of a crocodile. Well, ok, I suppose I would really.

But - its just chemicals and water, isn't it?

Every now and then I really fancy a coke. But as that's about twice a year, I'll have a full fat one. Cos then at least I'm not dosing myself up with aspartame along with all the other crap.

Am astounded at diet coke addictions . I think you lot share that with Hugh Hefner .

Wintersun · 05/01/2009 21:23

Stay away from those diet drinks. They're baaaad.

Apparently it stops you from losing weight.
Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners are really harmful too.

Just google 'does diet coke make you fat' and see what results you get.

Here's one article about diet drinks sabotaging weight loss;

//medheadlines.com/2008/02/12/diet-soda-may-sabotage-weight-loss-efforts/

tessieb · 05/01/2009 22:22

I drink far too much diet coke too - usually 3 cans a day. I went for 3 weeks without any at all last year and felt loads better for it - more energy, less bloated. I had a mild headache the day after I stopped, but after that felt ok (did miss it though, especially at lunch time at work). However, I started to have the odd diet coke when I was out, which quickly became my usual 3 cans a day.

I really must stop again as it's just full of rubbish - also think of the cost buying 21 or so cans a week!

I have read somewhere that your body gets used to sweet taste without calories so when you eat something with sweet with real sugars and therefore calories, it doesn't process it correctly and hence it sabotages weight loss.

It is horrible stuff but as I don't drink coffee I drink from time to time for the caffeine when I feel I won't make it through the day otherwise.

Dropdeadfred · 06/01/2009 09:20

I do have an amazingly strong bladder

I used to be on 'full-fat' coke but thought diet would be better for stopping weight gaain - i do think it makes me crave sugar though and I am considering just going back to the normal stuff...would love to stop but coke is all i drink (ever)...!!!

Othersideofthechannel · 06/01/2009 09:29

You must be sooooo dehydrated!

Dropdeadfred · 06/01/2009 09:40

you would think so wouldn't you...but I don't believe the hype.....there have been months and months where I can honestly say no other liquid has passed my lips..not even alcohol....but I don't look dehydrated...after all coke is just carbonated water with flavouring and colourings...?

pagwatch · 06/01/2009 09:46

diet coke etc actually feed sugar cravings. And aspartme is the very work of the devil. My son has terrible problems with sweetners.

There may be no obvious effects. Some people can smoke without harm but doesn't mean it is good for you. There are terrible for you.

Dropdead - but you do know that the good effect of the water is countered by the extra work that your liver has to do to clear all that crap out. My dad died of liver cancer. I don't fuck about with stuff that is hard for the liver to process.

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 06/01/2009 09:46

Anyhting with atrificial sweeteners in is not your friend. Try a quick google search on aspartame for instance. It's now banned in several big countries.

On the other hand if your weight is more of a risk to your health right now, then it's a matter of weighing up which is more important to you.
