Back from holiday and scales up 17 pounds, need some reassurance

I need some mental support please! Worked really hard before holiday to lose weight and get in shape healthily - I have a tendency to restrict which leads me into a binge/restrict cycle and have worked hard to eat well to avoid that this time. I’ve just come back from a 10 day holiday and the scales have me 17 POUNDS HEAVIER - that’s over a stone!! Please tell me I can’t have actually put on over a stone, I feel unbelievably awful right now

I gained loads after a holiday earlier in the year, about half was water retention from the flight and pissed off in a couple of days. The rest I had to work a bit harder for.
Dont despair, just get back to it.

best of luck

I agree, I wouldn't think it possible to put on 17lb in 10 days even if you did nothing but eat! Wait a week, it will be water retention.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/08/2026 14:26

Your digestive system probably needs to get back into gear again. If it's been sluggish on holiday for whatever reason then you might have quite a bit just sitting in your digestive system. At home I poo at least once a day but often on holiday it's every second or third day. No idea why, but it's a distinct pattern.

You would need to eat nearly 60,000 calories above your daily needs to put on that much weight. It'll be water retention from the flight/salt in foods/glycogen retention. Just go back to eating normally and weigh yourself again in 10days. You'll probably find you've actually only gained a lb or 2.

susiedaisy1912 · 28/08/2026 14:39

It will be partly water retention as others have said. You’ve probably only put on around 5-7 pounds.

Did you drink a lot? Alcohol is carbs which causes water retention, same with salty foods and we generally eat more when we are on holiday. The heat and flight also causes water retention. Did you still jab or not? I think those who do don't put on as much but still do with water retention but it comes off quickly in days/a week.

I put on over 9lb on a 3 day partying weekend.. 5lb was gone after 3 days the rest within 2 weeks..

Just get back to clean eating and drinking the water and I bet you will be back to normal weight in 2 or 3 weeks..

Disturbia81 · 28/08/2026 21:50

Honestly it’s impossible to put that much actual weight on, a few lbs maybe. I promise it’s mostly water! Get back to super healthy, drink lots and it’ll flush out. Your body is full of salty carb stores.

canuckup · 28/08/2026 22:09

Most of it will be water/fluid retention from the flight

Overthinking1234 · 29/08/2026 11:10

Thanks all! I was prepared for 9-10lbs and thought some of that would be water weight, but was absolutely not expecting well over a stone, so took me a bit off guard and my brain had a bit of a spiral!

I’ve been away for 5 days and I’m not going to weigh myself for another week! I swelled up from the heat (could see it in my ankles and feet) and ate in a way I wouldn’t at home. It’ll mostly be water retention.
I know that if I go back to my normal eating habits I’ll lose half (of whatever I’ve put on….im not looking!) and the rest within about 2 weeks.

Nocameltoeleggingsplease · 29/08/2026 11:21

I only went away for 3 days but put on 4lb; I was sticking to calories but I ate bread / wraps which I don’t normally do. 4 days later it was gone.

Autumnleaveandthegrass · 29/08/2026 11:23

Drink loads of water and eat sensibly and reweigh yourself in 3 days.

The constant cycle of restricting and binging is one of the strongest indicators in causing insulin resistance. Which in turn causes rapid weight gain and a near impossible challenge to lose weight whilst overwhelmed with hunger caused by unstable blood sugar. At my heaviest. I was 115kg. From 67kg. Where I had been throughout my 20s 30s and earlyn40s.

Thank God for GLP-s . I have now been back to 63 kg for the last year 18 months. Good luck OP. If WLI not appropriate then google , eating with insulin resistance.

Don’t panic! A 17lb jump after a holiday is very unlikely to be 17lb of body fat.. changes in water, salt, carbs, alcohol and simply having more food in your system can make the scales shoot up temporarily. Get back to your normal routine for a week or two and see where you actually settle before judging yourself
