Weight gain, holiday and feeling sorry for myself

Not really sure where this should go so apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Off on holiday tomorrow and feeling sorry for myself. I have put on so much weight and all of the clothes I bought earlier in the year, in anticipation of tomorrow, are snug or tight.

My cycles are 19 days apart (due to peri) and I was supposed to be starting the day we returned and now I'm probably due on tomorrow. Clothes that fit a couple of days ago refuse to zip or button today.

I really don't even want to go but I have no choice.

Not sure if I should try to diet whilst on holiday for a week or just get serious when we return after 7 days. I'm scared to gain weight during holiday and scared I'll ruin it for DH with my preoccupation during what should be a fun time.

I know food and drink aren't the only 'fun' things to do on holiday but it's a big part so it's causing me no end of stress and sadness that I enjoyed myself before I was meant to and now I feel like I can't enjoy holiday without digging a bigger hole in my weight loss.

No one else to talk to about this so had to get it out of my head.

I would enjoy your holiday. Can you do lots of walks or swimming to mitigate any weight gain? Have a positive plan for when you get back. You’ve got this!

Are you going somewhere warm and Mediterranean? If so, there might be some fabulously healthy food choices. I actually lost weight one year when we went to an all-inclusive in Turkey and I just went to town on The salads and stuffed vine leaves and fresh fruit etc - other people were choosing the chicken and chips and pizza options. It was lovely eating healthy and complicated salad combinations that I’d never make just for myself at home. With three small children at the time I rarely scattered pomegranate seeds ‏artfully on anything😂

Hopefully you’ll be somewhere Where you’ve got some choice over the food you eat? if you make the healthy choices, be enthusiastic about it I don’t think of it in diet terms or talk about it in diet terms. You could use this as a reset Not a disaster.

Just take a few outfits that you feel comfortable in. Don’t have anything any suitcase that won’t fit that will just make you feel depressed.

Holidays are expensive. Don't spoil it for yourself with food stress

Stormyrose · 26/08/2026 21:41

Just go and enjoy yourself. You can deal with it when you come home. Don’t worry about it and take some clothes with stretch,

I have no advice OP other than to say I feel the same. Tried on the much lauded on here Miraclesuit today and even that did absolutely nothing, I didn’t notice any difference at all between that and the cheap one piece I already had from Decathlon. My 4 year old is desperate for me to go in the pool with her this holiday and all I want to do is curl up in a ball and hide. Have had a C section and breast cancer all in the space of 4 years so my body is a right old state, flat chest, no waist and a belly. Looks like I’ll be spending my holiday in my running shorts and baggy t shirts as that’s all that seems to fit (the irony of this is not lost on me)

I hope you still have a lovely holiday ❤️

I lost weight with mounjaro a couple of years ago. I’m still a curvy 12 but confident wearing a bikini for the first time. On holiday, I looked at the women in bikinis the same size I used to be, and only felt stupid that I didn’t wear the bikini before! They all looked comfortable, tanned and healthy. I used to swelter in layers. Honestly, no one else cares. I know it’s hard to feel that though.

Not sure if this helps but I could have written your OP three weeks ago. I'm 'only' 10st 13lbs but where I used to be slim before having the kids there's a 8-14lb range that if I gain it just goes straight to my stomach and really changes how I look and feel. I also had a wedding just before the holiday and the dress I'd bought in march and felt amazing in was so tight and I felt crap it in come the actual day :(

I decided to still eat and drink what I wanted to on the holiday and then address it all when I came back. Kept to my word, signed up to Noom (the strategy that I know works for me in shifting the pesky stone when I want to) and am 1.5 weeks in and 3lbs down. I think if I'd have tried to do it over the holiday as well I'd have felt more miserable about it all, so my vote is eat what you feel you want to while away and then kickstart new habits when you're back!

"Don't go mad" is my mantra on holiday.

  • Don't miss out on the opportunity to eat things you wouldn't normally get at home, but there's no need to eat loads of generic unhealthy food, e.g. chips, crisps - you can do that anywhere, it isn't special to your holiday.
  • Moderating your alcohol intake (if you don't normally on holiday) means you can get more out of your holiday, no mornings being wasted due to feeling sluggish or hungover.
  • Choose water as your default basic thirst-quencher
  • Enjoy a treat now and again such as an ice cream, but don't fall into the habit of having them for the sake of it - make it a treat rather than part of your daily routine.
  • Embrace opportunities to get active on the holiday - swimming, walks to interesting places, anything else that's on offer that you fancy

Aim at least not to gain weight on your holiday and then when you get back you can work on losing weight.

Make sure you take some comfy 'old favourite' standby clothes on holiday that you can relax in, so you're not stressing over whether your newer clothes will or won't fit you.

Above all, if you do gain weight on holiday, remember it isn't the end of the world, just treat it as a blip and get back into a good eating routine when you are back home.

Your post really resonated with me. I feel your pain! This time last year I was fat shamed and thought to myself I'd lose weight by this year but surprise surprise I haven't.
I agree with everyone who's said enjoy your holiday! Also someone made a good point, noone cares on holiday! I always wear things I'd definitely not wear at home (ie sleeveless tops) and there are always larger people than you so just focus on making memories with your family and quit worrying about what you look like, life really is too short. Give yourself a break.
Have a brilliant time!
