Would any other slow losers like a half a pound a week solidarity thread?

I am such a sloooooooow loser and peri menopause has pretty much killed it off. If I am left to my own devices I naturally eat exactly my maintenance calories, and to undercut by 500 a day feels like such a hardship. I exercise regularly, get my steps, cook from scratch and it’s not enough any more.

please don’t suggest weight loss meds. I’m not eligible and I couldn’t afford them anyway.

my strategy is 1500 cals a day, good quality food with as little UPF and sugar as possible, increase veg intake, get an extra walk in after dinner, and reduce my alcohol intake. It’s all very simple stuff really. A half pound a week will add up to 21lbs by the time I go on holiday next summer 👙

anyone else feel the same?

@thenewaveragebear1983 this happens to me too! I try to assume it’s a temporary fluctuation and it’ll drop back down plus a little more to give an overall downward trend.

Harrysmummy246 · 21/09/2026 13:07

I seem to be another half kg down but suspect that's more to do with not eating much actual food around racing yesterday, which was, ok, not a win, but lots of positives re last year etc.

Have done weights with coach this morning, despite neither of us wanting to (she also raced yesterday) but did also eat cake, for which I am not sorry as it was lovely. Off to get my new glasses in a minute and try to bodge together new seat for boat (nothing is standardised etc and it's never just simple)

Dan dan noodles tonight, plenty of veg.

Very impressed that you managed weights this morning after a race yesterday! I think my body would be like jelly.

Hello! Similar here - I'm a touch shorter at 5'1 and a half!

After a year or two of chronic pain and then a full hysterectomy and one rather food-filled all inclusive holiday I weighed in at 9 stone 3 this summer, the heaviest I'd been for 15 years.

8 weeks later of harddd work, I'm 8 stone 11.2 and feeling better. My happy weight is closer to 8 stone, but now I'm over 40 it seems harder to maintain, so I'd be really happy to get to 8 st 5lbs and maintain that. It sounds a low weight to anyone taller but I'd still be a solid, big boobed, broad size 10, no where near size zero skinny, just normal. I don't think any less would do me any favours, especially getting older.

Sounds like you're going through a lot health wise, do be mindful of being kind to yourself/not pushing too much.

Thanks all for the lovely welcome, well done @TakeTheDog for that slow consistent loss over a long period, it’s so hard when it is slow. @thenewaveragebear1983 the ups and downs are the worst but keep going. I can’t believe how much menopause has made a difference! Though I’ve no idea really how many calories I need to lose slowly, probably 1200 but so hard to stay under 1500! I might shift to once a week weigh ins and does anyone use a measuring tape? Maybe this is the way to go, to measure once a month 🙂

Much less on the barbell for all exercises but good to move and it's the bit of the week where coach and I then talk through the week ahead, other sessions we will fit in together etc.
I am shattered now though

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/09/2026 19:35

Well done @Harrysmummy246glad your race went well.

I had a good day today, despite my fluctuating weight! I stuck to my calories and actually copilots suggestion of having a protein snack at 2.30 felt weird at the time as I wasn’t hungry but actually I felt much more alert all afternoon and didn’t slump and didn’t ‘graze’. Had leftover roast dinner for tea and afterwards had 15g of sweet and salt popcorn which is actually a generous portion and I feel good. And 50 cals under.

walked the dog, ran at lunchtime because it was so beautiful and sunny, and then did a nice stretch session with my bootcamp group as it is deload week. So a really good day.

tomorrow is my office day. I have to go in fully prepared and braced for the day, all eventualities covered. Water bottle, lunch made, will take a protein yoghurt as my 2.30 protein boost, and 2 green apples for the drive home. It’s our busiest day with kids football after school but I am meeting my friend for a walk will he nice.

It’s been a glorious day today hasn’t it. I was 1lb up this morning - I seem to do really well mon - Fri then am derailing at the weekend. If I could just have one weekend where k don’t have any treats I reckon I’d lose 3lbs over a fortnight. Come on me, I can do this!

good day today. Smoothie for breakfast, lentil soup and chicken sandwich for lunch, homemade breaded chicken & 3 veg for dinner. Small bit of flapjack. 2 hours of farm cleaning, 1 of house cleaning and a half hour Ladder weights workout

TakeTheDog · 21/09/2026 19:58

A good day today, 1300 calories total as I didn't fancy a snack after dinner for once!

13k steps, a 40 min weights workout and 17km ride on Zwift.

I think I'm on a 300-400kcal defecit so it will take 10 or so days to lose each pound; I can live with that, rather than eat any less and feel half dead.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/09/2026 20:39

Considering today is Tuesday and also I had a cupcake at work and a bagel for lunch, I have had a miraculously good day, and ended the day on 1500 on the nose. Although only 68g protein. And I even got a walk in which is again not usual for a Tuesday.

NitchenNinja · 22/09/2026 20:58

That sounds like a good day in all ways!

I’ve had a poor day food wise thanks to not sleeping well last night. I have just grazed all day, although I tried to choose healthier options, I’m not sure that eating 2 tablespoons of peanut butter at a time counts!

Oh well, tomorrow is a new day and will try and get out for a run first thing.

Swearwolf · 23/09/2026 06:19

Healthy grazing is better than unhealthy grazing @NitchenNinja, sounds like a decent compromise to me. I’ve had a similar day - have upped my exercise a little and suddenly today got really hungry. It was my first day working from home alone for a while and that always gets me wandering around looking for snacks. I think I kept it reasonable.

weight is still exactly the same - I went down by half a kilo last week but it was quite a sudden dip, and I have come back up to where I was. My weight loss or gain is always delayed though, I see the results of what I’m doing now in a couple of weeks. I’m just trying to focus on that and keep going with sensible habits. Planning to squeeze in a swim after school drop-off this morning as I’m working from home again.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/09/2026 06:44

morning, I get that too @NitchenNinjawhen I’ve slept badly, I’m sure I read somewhere that it makes you insulin resistant so that’s why you just cannot stop grazing. Peanut butter is mega calories though, I don’t buy it anymore because it was just too easy to eat 100s of cals.

I am tired as well this morning although I didn’t sleep badly, just not enough. We very often don’t get to bed til 11 then up at 6.15 and I need more. I never lie in though so I have to go to bed earlier which is why I never do it.

today I will walk the dog, and at lunchtime i need to go and post some vinted parcels. I have bootcamp after work, it’s our deload week which means it’s very light effort so I am almost tempted not to bother as it’s a bit boring. I could do a workout independently instead maybe. I’m doing Caroline Girvan at the moment, which I really enjoy.

food wise, I have protein yoghurt and chia for breakfast, lunch will be leftover portion of something, and dinner tonight will be cornflake chicken with salad and new potatoes. I’m
really enjoying my high protein snack and it definitely seems to curb my afternoon snacking so I am having a small portion of chicken with some veg at 2.30. That should bring me in at my calorie and protein goal with maybe room for a bit of fruit or sugar free jelly

I’m exactly the same @Swearwolf - It always takes a while for any loss to show on the scales, which is why for me measuring myself works better. I can get very despondent when I don’t see a loss and then sabotage myself.

I will confess that I’m asleep by 10 every night - any later and I feel it the next day, however, I am up at 5.15, and love the quiet at that time in the morning and normally out for a run by 6 at the latest. I use to run early evening, but the older I get the harder I find it - getting out early gets it over and done with.

I had Weetabix for breakfast, haven’t had them for about 20 years! I’d forgotten how much I like them and gives a bit more variety from the usual porridge, eggs, Greek yogurt. Added bonus that they’re also quick and easy to prepare - I sound like an advert 😄

TakeTheDog · 23/09/2026 10:08

A good day food/exercise wise y'day... and for my efforts, I'm a whole 2lbs heavier on the scales!

Impossible gain so guessing it's water/salt... maybe I need to weigh less often but it's hard not to 'just check'.

OldieButBaddie · 23/09/2026 10:15

I would like to join you please!
I have lost a stone in the past 4 months without trying due to a combination of grief and illness. Now I want to keep it off, and I could really use losing another 7 lb but am not prepared to be hungry!

Luckily I have a small appetite but of course this can lead to grazing, so I am starting by trying to eat more filling and long lasting food at my meals and not to snack during the day other than things like crudites/fruit

I am pretty active usually but due to illness have been less so recently. I walk my dog about 5x a week for an hour plus often half an hour in the morning. I go to the gym and do pilates and cycle (lots normally, just getting back into it)

Alcohol is my downfall, I can easily do 1500 cals a day of food and I know I lose weight at 1800 as I did after lockdown very successfully.

I don't really like sweet things and never have sugar in/on anything, not a huge fan of cake etc. I LOVE cheese and crisps though, but I don't eat much of them as they pile on the pounds

I look forward to all your tips!

NitchenNinja · 23/09/2026 11:38

Welcome @OldieButBaddie - love the username 😄 I’m a newbie here too but been reading along from the start.

Sorry to hear that things have been so difficult and I hope you’re feeling a bit better now? I think maintaining sounds like a good plan, let your body get use to sitting at that weight and maybe tackle the 7Lbs later.

Frugal25 · 23/09/2026 14:43

Hello everyone 🤗
I'd like to join if I may? Been reading along but thought I'd come out of the shadows.

I am getting married in 6 months, and I have 2 stone to lose in order to get into the dress (bought it a while back and weight has piled on).
I can lose weight if I stick to 1200 cals which is doable but I find quite boring so hoping by joining here I'll maintain focus and get motivation! I tend to lose 1lb a week. And then put it back on when I even sniff a dinner.

I love cheese too @OldieButBaddie and it's my downfall.
I've just started doing a Davina McCall DVD three times a week so hopefully that helps speed things along.

Welcome newbies! Oh I have had such a rubbish day, I’m very hormonal and I think that may have contributed but I felt like I was going to cry most of the day. I’m going to do a workout now to see if that brightens my mood.

re the daily weighing. I don’t weigh daily but I do a couple a week and I always take the lowest one as my weight. A podcast I love (Ruth Mac) says it’s a lot less likely to get a false low than a false high, so your lowest of the week is the one to use.

this week what’s working for me is having a set high protein snack mid afternoon. I don’t even really want it when I have it, but it is noticeable how much less snacky I feel in the afternoon and it really keeps me going. I portioned up some small tubs of chicken anc carrots on Sunday about 150 cals each and i had one today at 2.30.

Thank you for that, I had no idea! I’ve just googled and it looks delicious.

Found this recipe and will give it a go later in week.

Could it be tiredness? You must burn a huge amount of calories when you’re racing, and then to be lifting the following morning - it’s a big demand on your energy. I know for me that if I do more exercise than usual, I am ravenous and find it so hard to eat well.

I am definitely tired, yes, and haven't trained today, mostly for that reason. But it's not an excuse to eat carp

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/09/2026 19:46

@Harrysmummy246 I always find this when I race or do a long run in training. On the actual day I very often find I don’t eat much, two days later I am an unstoppable beast, nothing will satisfy me. I think it’s a combination of calorie deficit, dehydration and nutrient deficit (eg body craving protein for Repair). Tiredness also affects me and makes me crave sugar.

I feel a bit better after my workout, I have now done 5 days of Caroline Girvan and I feel good on it, I’m getting back into the rhythm of it. I need some better dumbbells (Xmas list I think) as I only have an adjusted one which means I keep having to stop to change weight. Or I just use 10kg for everything. But it’s good and I can feel it working. I stood at my standing desk all day today, my feet were really tired afterwards, but weirdly I didn’t seem to clock any extra steps.

just had a nice dinner. I buy big bags of chicken thighs and cut the meat off, it’s much more economical and if you have good scissors you can just strip it cleanly really quickly. I then dipped in egg and rolled in panko, and oven baked. 😋

i’m now going to have a nice bath and read my book 🫧
