Feel like I look worse after 2 stone loss

I was at top end of overweight 5 months ago, 13 stone 2 at 5’7. And size 16 was tight. I’m now 11 stone 3 and top end of healthy weight and size 14 fits comfortably. I need to lose at least another stone I would say and should be a size 12.

But what I don’t understand is why I hate my reflection now more than I did 2 stone heavier. I feel like I look huge and nothing sits right or fits right. Did anyone else have this? Will it all improve when I lose the last stone?

It’s because despite all the hard work you’ve put in you still aren’t happy with your body, but before you could blame it on being overweight and not trying, now you have tried and so not seeing what you want makes it feel worse to you.

Keep going to reach that target, and get some advice online and by looking at things people your shape wear. You aren’t dressing to fit the same body, so the same clothes won’t work.

And compare pictures from before with now, you will not be able to argue with the difference

Some people feel that having a bit more fat as you get older makes you look younger, and sometimes it's where you lose it from. A lot of people feel they drop breast size and feel that makes them look worse overall, but you can't really choose where you lose, or keep, the weight.

@GrimReflection less weight but similar is happening to me

I initially felt I look exactly the same, and then I just started finding problems

I think for me, some of it is that when I was overweight, I wasn't paying any attention to what I looked like because I just didn't really want to know

When I had to start thinking about the fit of something, it suddenly made me even more critical.

To some extent, I'm still dithering about how worth it it all is but I think it will probably even out when I've lost the huge amount that I've got to lose, there's a lot left!

Are you working out?

I find it really beneficial, not just by creating a nice physical shape, but the psychological lift from feeling taut and strong.

Thank you these are all helpful comments. I think you’ve all hit a bit on the truth. I am working out 1-2 times a week with weights and swimming 1 time per week for 30 mins of lengths. I walk 5k most days. I’m a bit saggy here and there but I’m late 40s I’m ok with that. My boobs are holding up well and my face looks fine for my age.

It’s more clothes that looked nice at this weight before just don’t look nice now but my shape does seem different maybe. I think I’ve lost more bum/legs and am carrying weight on my middle. It just feels disheartening to work so hard and not feel happy with the progress.

Bet you look great OP.

I’m the same height and starting weight as you and just beginning my weight loss journey. I’m 50.

Do you feel better, lighter, fitter, stronger? How is your hair and skin? You mention the stubborn middle which is hormonal as well as visceral fat, the hardest to lose. How are your stress levels?

Poppycorn123 · 22/07/2026 06:33

Well done on your loss, 2 stone down is a fantastic achievement! I bet you look a lot better than you think. I find certain clothes make me feel bigger, could it be that? Why not buy a few new co-ords etc? Keep going to your target weight, you will soon feel fabulous. I'm in the middle of weight loss too. I am now your starting weight, want to lose another stone to 1.5 🤗 you've surpassed my goal weight!

Keep going though, you’ll see a difference and feel better when you get to the end of your journey, I’m sure of it.

Sometimes it goes last from tummy so you might need to keep going. The last time I successfully lost a lot I also found things kind of looked worse for a while, then improved with the last phase of weight-loss.

TheMarriageOfAirAndFrock · 22/07/2026 16:50

Are you talking about new clothes you’ve bought since the weight loss - or the old clothes you were wearing before?

If the latter - well, they don’t fit any more, so they obviously won’t look good.

If the former, you may not have adapted your style yet. Read some of the weight loss threads on the Style and Beauty board. People are having to buy whole new wardrobes - but sometimes they’re quite reluctant to consider clothes of a different shape and style to the things they wore when overweight.

WaryCyanStork · 22/07/2026 17:08

My weight has fluctuated a lot, and I feel similarly when I'm slightly overweight.

When I'm thinner I like my figure, when I'm more overweight the curves seem to be in the right places, but there's this awkward in between where the only "curve" seems to be my stomach.

GrimReflection · 22/07/2026 20:09

Thank you all, I think I assumed as I lost weight I’d look gradually better so this has knocked me a bit and it’s reassuring to hear some of you were the same. I think it’s the fact size 14 clothes which used to look nice before I gained weight now don’t. I think shopping for new is the solution but I still have weight to lose and can’t afford to buy twice really. Think I’ll have to just suck it up for the next couple months and then treat myself when I get to my target weight.
