15,000 steps doable?

I usually don't even hit 10k but I've decided today to do 15k every day until my holiday.

By 6.30pm I'd only done 5560 - set off for a wander and was actually quite surprised by how bloody long it took!

Finished the walk on 17,800 as i ventured a bit too far along the coast!

I've now got to try to fit them in around a full time job and a strong relationship with my comfy settee!

Anyone else trying to move more? Will it make much of a difference? I can't afford to go back in the jabs so this is my summer wardrobe hope!

It will make a difference. And yes, 15,000 steps are doable.
Good luck with your goal 💐

Thanks @123goandrun 🥰

I've got some extra down time at work as things are quiet so the plan is:

Get dh to drop me further from work and walk in

Set a reminder every hour and do a couple of laps of the corridors

Nip out at lunch for half an hour

Get dh to pick me up further from work

Then I'll have to make up any I've not managed after tea!

Yes, I started on 10k, bumped up to 12k and am now on 15k, to be honest due to various circumstances I do a lot of those pacing my living room while watching TV or going around the kitchen table repeatedly while listening to music or up and down the stairs. I'm now down 2 stone in 2 months (also counting calories).

NorthEastNancy · 14/06/2026 21:32

That's amazing @IllBurnThatBridgeWhenIGetToIt

I've only got 34 days until I go away but if love a stone off. I dropped 50lbs (and i wasnt at target!) on the jabs but I've sneaked 8lb back on in the year I've been off them.

I'm 4lb down this week with calorie counting so it's going in the right direction

15k a day is achievable but if you’re working 9-5 at a desk it’s obviously more difficult than if you’re walking around all day. I average 24k steps in one shift but on my days off if I don’t actively try I’ll only reach 5/6k and that’s doing 2 school runs which are 15 minutes walking each way.

If you can afford it, get a walking pad. I have one and it’s brilliant
I get my extra steps in whilst on my laptop, ironing school uniforms or just watching a movie.
https://amzn.eu/d/06Y6g9eJ This is the one I have.

If that’s not an option for you, what about going for a walk during your lunch break at work, or even walking to work if possible. (Just seen your update includes these)

NorthEastNancy · 14/06/2026 21:39

I did consider a walking pad @Dolphinsarejerks and .ight get one for the winter.

I really enjoyed getting out tonight though - I dragged dh along and it was lovely to just walk and chat 🥰

It's not just about the steps, it's better to walk at a proper pace for shorter distance than do a further distance but not walk fast enough to get your heart rate up.

Dubrovnikgirl · 14/06/2026 22:06

It's definitely doable. I get up at 5am, have coffee, do some stretching, and go for a walk or jog for an hour or so. At lunch time I would go for a walk. However, I walk to the office and it takes me 40 min so it's easy for me.
Sometimes I jog to the gym, do my weight training and straight to do office but this is easy for me as the office is only 5 min walk from the gym.
Walking pad is fantastic so it's worth investing when the weather is bad.

Dubrovnikgirl · 14/06/2026 22:10

I personally didn't lose any weight by walking even 20k for months however the biggest change happened when I started jogging.
My favourite time would be early morning when the air is fresh and everyone in the house is still asleep

WorriedAnxiousAndStressed · 14/06/2026 22:32

I recently started trying to get 10k steps, and now im
at around 12/17k depending on the day (I try to get 5 miles currently; some days it’s 5, some 6 and on a good day 7miles).
However, I did get a walking pad to help, initially it was just to walk after eating (at least 20 mins after breakfast and dinner), and that’s gradually increased. As the weather gets better I am hoping to walk outdoors more.
I am ‘sort of’ counting calories, and have managed to drop 5lbs since starting, so that’s good 😁

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 15/06/2026 07:12

you need to spread it out a bit! Are you able to incorporate walking into your commute to work at all? Eg get off a bus a couple of stops early /walk to the next stop to get on ? If not and you need to drive, can you aim to be at work 20 minutes earlier and then walk beforehand.

if you have a Fitbit you can set it to vibrate at 10 to the hour to remind you to do some steps. You could add something similar to your phone, have an alarm (vibrate only to avoid annoying colleagues!) go off 10 minutes before each hour and just find an excuse to get out of your desk chair and walk.

go for a walk each lunchtime, even just 20 minutes. It will all add up.

TwiggyShrimp · 15/06/2026 07:15

Yes, I do about 15k a day. 5,000 in the home, doing normal things, and then 10k in a walk which is just under 5 miles. It takes about 1hr 20 minutes. I don't know if I've seen a difference but I would suggest good shoes. Shin splints can happen if your route is all pavement. Also, if you're not used to uneven terrain, you can strain the tops of your feet, plantar fasciitis etc. Might be easier to try every other day just to make sure you're not straining yourself, initially. Have fun!

NorthEastNancy · 15/06/2026 10:56

I've done almost 6000 this morning but that was with DH dropping me quite far from work and me walking past work and quite far past and back!

Not sure my phone tracks accurately. A watch might be better - especially as I often leave my phone lying around!

Yeah I reach that daily. I brought a walking treadmill so i could watch tv shows & walk 😂

InconsequentialFerret · 15/06/2026 11:08

It's totally doable, although I've started Couch to 5k running just to do them a bit quicker!

CarelessWimper · 15/06/2026 12:11

Pre dog I often used to use a walking workout to help get my steps in, particularly when the weather was bad or it was at the end of the day.

Get Fit with Rick was my preferred one on You Tube.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/06/2026 12:35

It takes me 2 hours to do 15,000 steps and annoyingly I don’t quite have enough time for that. I probably only manage it once or twice a month. I really should do better.

Yes definitely see if you can pick up a cheap watch tracker.

What do you do when it is raining.

I put on a waterproof and take an umbrella.

Beachforever · 15/06/2026 15:50

Break it up into chunks. It takes me about half an hour to walk 5,000 steps. I usually do a half hour dog walk first thing, then a longer 1 hour dog walk after work. That’s my 15k steps and it feels manageable.

It’s easier to get out if you have a dog I guess! I listen to podcasts whilst I’m marching.

Also, walk as briskly as you can, no wandering. Just get the steps done!

Gosh. You sound amazing- that’s inspiring. You make me feel very lazy. You deserve to be slim

BeardySchnauzer · 15/06/2026 16:44

I have a garmin now but I used to have a cheap little pedometer that I would tuck into my bra!

I find it’s harder than you think - take dogs out for 1.5hr walk but it’s only 8k steps because they’re constantly stopping to sniff something!! So now I drag them on an evening walk and take myself off for a solo power walk

as the weather is nice, a lunchtime walk is also good

I feel your pain with the sniffing but I try to make use of the time with something like calf raises or depending on where I am squats or lunges
