15,000 steps doable?

I usually don't even hit 10k but I've decided today to do 15k every day until my holiday.

By 6.30pm I'd only done 5560 - set off for a wander and was actually quite surprised by how bloody long it took!

Finished the walk on 17,800 as i ventured a bit too far along the coast!

I've now got to try to fit them in around a full time job and a strong relationship with my comfy settee!

Anyone else trying to move more? Will it make much of a difference? I can't afford to go back in the jabs so this is my summer wardrobe hope!

Walking you probably need to allow yourself about an hour a day of just walking on top of your day to day steps to do that every day - if you have time it is doable.

I took up running to get more steps faster 🤣🤣

InfoSecInTheCity · 20/06/2026 16:28

I did the 1m Ill ion steps challenge last year where you do 1 million steps in 3 months, it averages out at 10,000 steps a day which seemed easy till I had a few days where I didn’t hit 10k and it started to build up! I found the easiest way to get them in was to pace the house and walk on the spot whenever I could. So if I was on a Teams call I did it on my phone and walked as I talked, marching on the spot while the kettle boiled and so on. They added up quick that way.

BeardySchnauzer · 20/06/2026 16:29

I always put my watch on when I wake up to get every single step but do wonder at the value of them tbh!!

I don’t have a watch that measures steps - use my phone so suspect my actual steppage is higher (I like to think!😂).

Pre dog I often used to use a walking workout to help get my steps in, particularly when the weather was bad or it was at the end of the day.

Get Fit with Rick was my preferred one on You Tube.

I came here to say use a "Get fit with Rick" video! You can choose the music theme, or step count from his various videos, or go straight to the 10000 steps one!

mondaytosunday · 20/06/2026 17:17

10,000 is fine. In fact studies show the sweet spot is around 8000 to get max fitness to effort ratio, after that the health benefits tail off. But of course the more you walk the more calories you burn so I’m certainly not trying to discourage you. But what you eat is key. And if you have time to add more exercise, a resistance routine would be better than walking more.

boringperson123 · 20/06/2026 21:52

I honestly find it near impossible to get to 10k steps on a normal working day let alone 15k, but I have an office job. Most of my day is taken up by obligatory chores. I also find it waaay harder to get steps on a walking pad because it’s so boring even if you put a show on or something. If you do get a walking pad though it’s much easier to split the time up throughout the day.

Whenever I go on a full day out especially for example walking round a city it’s so effortless to get more than 10,000 steps I don’t know why I find it so difficult.

It's never a write off if you're generally consistent! Look at you smashing it already today! Was the sunrise gorgeous?

I'm interested in the different lengths of time it takes for people to accomplish their steps. My fitbit, phone and walking pad are synced so I know the length of time I take, and it seems much slower than others! I manage 6000 in an hour, whether walking on my pad or outdoors. I've got a long stride (am 5'8") and am a reasonably fast walker by nature. I'd love to get them in in less time!

TheLightBetween · 21/06/2026 19:33

@ReallyLoveYourPeaches I'm similar.

A 60 minute walk I walk between 5,455 and 6400 but normally around the 6k.

I've been thinking about trying to add in some strength exercises, but I'm enjoying pushing myself to make 15k.

Managed 10k before 9am this morning and about 6k walking around town.

Happy Sunday to everyone.

I walk fast, I’m constantly being told by DH and DD to slow down, but I’m a very ‘mission orientated’ ‘be efficient’ type of person so I think my walking speed has just normalised at fast. Yesterday we were at an outdoor event, walking in my opinion intolerably slow, dawdling about and I averaged 1000 steps every 10 mins according to my watch, on the treadmill I’m walking at about 6.5kmph when I’m getting warmed up but not sure how accurate those speeds are.

NorthEastNancy · 22/06/2026 21:17

I'm a slow walker - trying to speed up though!

I've done 17336 today and that took 2 hours 37 minutes. 6.8 miles

Last week (my week starts on a Tuesday) I averaged 14,564 steps. So close!

NorthEastNancy · Today 21:48

So very close @TheLightBetween

Ive had some very sweaty walks this week. I stupidly over did it yesterday. Walked a big chunk of the way home in the blazing sun without a drink as dh was running late.

My route is through industrial estates and there was nowhere to stop and no shops. I was shaking a bit and sweat was literally running off me.

Stupid! I was much better prepared today! Almost 20k yesterday and 18.5l today - I'm getting faster and can get further before dh catches me up in the car!

I've not lost a single ounce though 😪

Well done!

bear in mind when it comes to the scales the exercise and this weeks heat will be playing silly buggers with you. Doing more activity means your muscles ache which is because you have little micro tears in the muscle. Your body heals those using water so tends to hoard it. Add in the delightful sweat pit we’re all living in this week and you’re probably retaining water. You can keep doing steps while also allowing yourself to slow the pace every couple of days so your muscles rest and heal between bouts and drink so so so so much water as drinking frequently and staying hydrated encourages your body to cease the hoarding.

BeardySchnauzer · Today 22:32

Wow I’m impressed you’ve kept it up in this weather. I’ve managed only 4000 today!!

FlappyDappyDoo · Today 22:37

Will it make a difference? Not particulary no.

As humans we walk all the time and have got mighty efficient at it. If you want to lose weight do some high intensity weight training / run some intervals. Basically work harder and get better results. Or be lazy and have the jabs, but walking loads is not a very good use of your time if weight loss is the goal.

However if you simply love walking then crack on.

*It goes without saying that you also need to cut out processed foods as much as possible. But I am assuming that you already know this.

TheLightBetween · Today 23:08

I can't believe you have kept at it in this heat- I am very impressed with your steps, but glad to hear you are more prepared with water now.

I've done 10,505 and had a swim in the sea so not worrying that I haven't made the 15k.

This will and is making a difference - I was very efficient at doing minimal walking so this is a vast improvement.
