How do people become obese?

Before someone is obese, they are overweight. Their clothes sizes also change. Why do they wait until they are obese to try and lose weight? Do the majority of obese people have mental health issues?weigh

Because I like biscuits! Judge away but leave me alone 😆

On a serious note though, it’s not hard to figure out OP.

Long covid. Can no longer exercise, my body also can’t seem to respond normally anymore to lots of things including trying to minimise weight gain. It defies science in lots of ways now (including gaining half a stone in a month on 850 sodding calories a day) - some of those calories are thrown up too (getting sick if I forget to stand up slowly enough is another long covid pleasure). Previously I would nip it in the bud if I felt a few pounds go on and stayed the same dress size for years. However, many people for a wide variety of reasons won’t have been able to do that - surely that’s easy to understand? It’s a bit simplistic at best to say “why don’t they just….”.

We don't really need three meals a day. And big portions!

I really like cake

Cos I’m a fat cunt who loves to eat and my husband also likes to still shag me.

In a nutshell.

It isn't something that happens overnight. It only takes a very small overeat to put on 1lb a month - over a year, that's nearly a stone; over 5 years and it could take someone from healthy to obese.

Metabolism can slow fo all sorts of reasons, most obese people did not suddenly decide to eat lots of cake, they ate what they'd always eaten but stopped being able to burn it off, and the weight crept up.

Me?

I had a disabled child that keeps me awake literally all night and spends his days chucking stuff about, so ended up just eating whatever was quickest/easiest/most satisfied my burning desire for something comforting. I spent the very little time I have, sitting down. Just sitting. In peace and quiet. With biscuits.

My metabolism is slower than your average snail, and for a long time that just meant my bum and boobs got bigger. Then I hit my mid 30s and “hello stomach!”

Then I got CFS (and still stayed up all night) so had even less energy to do anything apart from exist.

Now, I make my entire body hurt by walking steps I’d still rather not, and try and meal plan in the 0.2 seconds of time I have. I have binned all chocolate and crisps, and instead eat fruit. Most days, I’d still actually like a kebab. But I’m also going to die of obesity if I’m not careful, and see previous rant about disabled child requiring my existence.

HTH!

Come on Op- you can’t work this out?
Why do people smoke? Or fall into any bad habits? Do you live your life perfectly?

dottiehens · 14/05/2026 22:52

Cortisol, depression ,lack of sun, hormones and aging. Less to do with food really.
