Petite support thread... continued

All petites are welcome on this thread, but it seemed like it would be particularly helpful to have a corner of Mumsnet for those of us who are petite/small framed and officially a 'healthy weight' but know we feel/look better a few pounds lighter (which would still be within a healthy weight/not underweight).

Maybe we can share goals, progress, struggles, things that are working, etc.? It would also be lovely to hear from any petites who are at a 'happy weight' and what you are doing to be successful.

Feel free to share as much or little as you like. Height, current weight, goal weight or other body measurements, nutrition, calories, exercise, NSV, etc.

It’s difficult to overindulge on bland chicken and overcooked vegetables. 😆😆😆

@CortieTat I’m very impressed with your Mochi making - I have never tried it but am absolutely fascinated with all food Japanese! Just wish I liked sushi because the fish always looks so beautiful and fresh, as well as being so healthy, but I just can’t get use to the texture - having been brought up on bland chicken and overcooked veg sludge myself!

@Fibrous lifting weights definitely changes your whole body. Even though I’m not currently able to lift apart from a bit of arm work, the almost 25 years of lifting in one guise or another has definitely given me a much more athletic shape and probably a clothes size smaller for my weight, as well as of course all the great health benefits.

Fibrous · 17/12/2025 15:00

@TappaMcFeety yeah I'm not sure why I'm surprised. I've run/cycled a lot in the past (I still run) and would go to the gym occasionally, but mostly to do cardio. I wasn't expecting the addition of weights to make much difference but it really has, and I definitely feel stronger. Lifting has improved my running, too, as long as I don't do too much. I wish I'd got into it when I was younger but the fashion was just to be skinny and I didn't understand the benefits. Good work on avoiding that narrative!

BogRollBOGOF · 19/12/2025 06:38

My older clothes are more snug on the shoulders and arms than 5 years ago when I started more weights based workouts. It's good for health, but irritating in a I-don't-want-to-replace-clothes-I-like kind of way.

A problem with being short with well-developed glutes at work is that my bum is at the height to get wedged between the chairs and tables. I went in one classroom of a tall, slim male teacher and couldn't get through the gap to his desk because it was smaller than my thigh... his wider parts are at least 6" higher! I'm only a size 10!

Honestly BOGOF I’m very jealous, it’s a good problem to have! I have a form of myositis and when I first got ill I lost my glutes and the buggers just won’t return. All those years of hard earned gains to end up with a pancake bum! 😁

CortieTat · 19/12/2025 11:53

@BogRollBOGOF I also think it’s a good problem to have! I definitely have strong glutes, I can push a glute bridge all the way out and pull it back in on a reformer bench without any problems but my bum is small, I am toned and have visible muscles but they are long and wiry rather than big! I would like to achieve this instagrammable bulky look just for a day, instead of looking like an old workhorse 😅.

I wonder if it has to do with the kind of exercise I do? I don’t lift heavy weights, I don’t think I could deadlift more than 30 kilos. I do a lot of body weight, calisthenics type of stuff, pilates, barre, yoga. Used to train martial arts regularly before I got pregnant too.

Hellohihola · 19/12/2025 12:00

I am 5ft 50/51kgs. I want to get down to 48kgs so I look a little leaner. I am pretty active however with life struggles recently I haven’t been lifting usual weights etc but I am trying to run and I walk a lot! Size 6, sometimes an 8. 2 c sections so stomach is not totally flat..

i am trying to focus on eating lots of protein more than anything right now, however I did just eat a bag of chocolate coins and nearly an entire choc Santa 🤣 sometimes I have days where I eat terribly! Then I generally reset the following day.

would love to stay on this thread for enthusiasm and accountability towards my goal weight, as I can tend to yo-yo a couple of kg

TappaMcFeety · 19/12/2025 16:32

Welcome @Hellohihola - I know what you mean about the Xmas chocolate, it’s fatal 😁 I’ve just been given a Lindt reindeer and I’m trying to restrain myself from bitting it’s head off!

BogRollBOGOF · 21/12/2025 08:01

I'm on around 30kg for deadlift... well before December hit and I've gone off-piste with exercise for various reasons. My biggest limiter is grip, both fot physically getting my hands around a bar and the forearm strength to keep going. I use "Bear Grips" to help but they are a bit faffy.

I appreciate a body that moves, and it always was more pear-shaped. Weights have added more upper body mass, but that's healthy.

I've got a stupid injury that i'm recovering from that's kept me off running for two weeks so far. The silver lining is that having felt run-down and losing my appetite a couple of weeks ago, I had a lot of home made vegetable soup to keep me going, and that's held off pre-Christmas gains.

CherryBlossom2025 · 22/12/2025 21:19

Good evening. Just catching up on the thread. Well done, everyone!

Welcome @Hellohihola

Sorry to hear about your injury @BogRollBOGOF

I was back up to 8st6.5 this morning, but I have been bouncing around 8st5 for most of the last week. My drop to 8st4 1/4 a couple of weeks ago has not returned, but I guess it’s not the easiest time of the year.

How’s everyone doing? Has anyone got any strategies for the next couple of weeks?
I think my plan is to be mindful but also to try to relax a bit with food and enjoy something more calorific if I want it. It’s so hard isn’t it to get a balance? I want to enjoy special times but I’m also aware how quickly I can gain a few pounds and then it takes me months to lose them.

PinkSkiesAtSunrise · 23/12/2025 10:28

I dared to weigh myself this morning for the first time in weeks, I was fearing the worst after a lot of eating out and general relaxing of my ‘rules’ in the run up to Christmas. But amazingly, I’ve maintained, and I’m still at my lowest recent weight! I’ve been allowing myself little bits of things like chocolate, mince pies, cheese & wine, but I’ve always been conscious of not eating too much of anything, and this seems to have worked! I’d still like to lose a few more pounds in the new year, but for now, I’m over the moon with that! I’ll definitely be enjoying some treats over Christmas, but I just won’t go crazy with the volume, that seems to be the key!

Hoolahoophop · 23/12/2025 10:33

I have given in to gluttony the last few weeks and all my jeans are too tight again. Boo.

But I shall be back with you all in the new year.

Just wanted to wish all my fellow Petite's a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful healthy and happy new year. 💝

Fibrous · 23/12/2025 11:22

I also deep in gluttony and actually looking forward to the January diet.

CortieTat · 24/12/2025 08:52

Welcome @Hellohihola !

We are already in the middle of the family tour and survived several meals. I am surprisingly doing fine, there’s a lot of chocolate lying around but I managed to eat only a few bits. It’s cold and dark outside and I went for a run with DH, second time since the little one was born. It felt fantastic 💪.

BogRollBOGOF · 24/12/2025 09:00

I've been fairly calm on the mince pies and other trimmings through advent. It's been my first December working full time in years so that's kept me in routine more naturally. I've had my head down getting through to the end of term so it's all arrived a bit abruptly anyway!

Big food shop done last night. I try to bear in mind that I'm not feeding the 5000 and the shops are open by the 27th anyway.

DH for the first time has requested not to have the tubs of Quality Street or Roses. Mainly that he's watching himself, but also they just aren't what they used to be. So that's one less temptation in the house Grin

Weigh-in today is good 63.15kg. The photo is of the trends since March when I got the scales in a post holiday bloat. There was a big bump in the summer from holiday, less movement and less routine. What I'm pleased about is the (glacial but) consistent downwards trend since starting my job in September. That means my lifestyle is balanced, and I am gradually losing a little surplus fat, but healthily and I'm keeping my muscle mass. Ultimately I want to be and stay healthy, and feel good in myself.

This is such a sensible and sustainable approach and one I try and remind myself of. Our bodies have to carry us through, hopefully to old age and I want to get there with good bone health and muscle mass.

However 😁, I have slipped several times in the last few days food wise, cheese footballs and Lindt reindeers anyone? But I know I have this thread to support me and we can all cheer each other back on the straight and narrow come January!

Happy Xmas eve everyone!

Well done this is brilliant :) glad it made you feel so good!

can I just say how refreshing it is to have a thread on petite ladies? As it really is so much harder to carry “an extra few pounds” when you are 5ft nothing! Even if we do weight slight. It’s great to be able to relate to one another. As for balance, there is none over this next week but that’s ok 😂!

enjoy everyone x

MylipstickiscalledHugMe · 25/12/2025 10:48

Hi all, can I join? I realise it's a very unusual day to be thinking about losing weight, but getting on the right track would be the best present to myself.

I'm narrow boned but pear-shaped, currently 8st 10. Was down to 8st 3 over the summer and I felt finally in proportion, all my old (still nice) clothes fitted, loads of energy and cellulite much reduced.

What works for me (if I can avoid/limit bread and chocolate) is low-carb but highish protein and a good amount of healthy fats.

Merry Christmas fellow petites!

CortieTat · 25/12/2025 14:54

I’ve been doing great most of the time but finally went to town yesterday over Julafton (Christmas Eve) meal - I dutifully count calories and counted just over 4600 yesterday 😅. Mainly fish, cabbage and kale dishes, plus chocolate. I also make something new every year and this year I made kutia for the first time. It’s an Eastern European Christmas dessert made with poppy seeds, wheat, nuts, dried fruit honey and milk. It’s of course full of protein and fibre, right? It was a success and I ended up having leftovers for breakfast.

We went running again today. I’m slow but fit enough to run 5K without any problems after a long break.

eurotravel · 25/12/2025 16:13

5 foot and 55kg here and may need to just stop eating altogether this week to start shifting 4Kg

mugglewump · 26/12/2025 15:37

Hi all, May I join up here? I'm under 5' (148cm) and weigh ??? (too much) and am almost 63 years old. My weight has increased by about half a stone every decade and I have decided enough is enough. I am not a fan of dieting (I find it hard to do and pile it all back on again), but am intending to ditch biscuits (and the like) and alcohol for the new year and see where it takes me.

Fibrous · 29/12/2025 14:18

I’ve braved the scales - 2kg weight gain. I’ve downloaded Myfitnesspal premium and photographed my lunch - a salad. 950 calories and 75% fat apparently! Oops.

Well done for confronting it and getting back on board - I’ve not been brave enough yet.

That sounds quite some salad but if it has lots of good stuff in it and is nutritious then it’s not so bad, just maybe don’t have a mince pie to follow 😄

Welcome mugglewump - it’s insidious isn’t it? how those pounds sneak up on you as you get older - but that sounds like a good place to start and I bet ditching the biscuits and alcohol will soon show results.

Oooh I just found this threads. There was a similar thread a few years ago called ‘shorties trying to lose weight’ which I was a long running member of with a different user name, and it was fab.

I’m 5’2’’ and 9st 10, would like to get down to 9st 2. So hopefully this thread might give me some accountability.
