Why are the scales not shifting despite loads of cardio exercise???

Been doing a 30 min Tae Bo DVD 4/5 times a week, plus press ups and weights....although I've lost inches, clothes feel better etc. The scales are not budging!!

When can I expect to see something? I am not dieting but I have drastically reduced my junk intake and don't smoke or drink

ooooo I'd like a boob job once this next baby's arrived and stopped bfeeding. Do you think there are some MN plastic surgeons who'd take pity? Do you think we could get a group discount?

hey, thought of you when I was at the gym this morning, Puss! Wondered if you'd got a HR monitor

God, just did some calculations and worked out I want to lose 20 POUNDS of body fat, eek!!!!

I drop weight really quickly eating something and salad. A rice salad sometimes and one or two new potatoes.
I cut out all butter bread cheese except for twice weekly poached egg on toast.
by something and salad varies from ultra healthy baked falafel or soup, or lasagne, spag bol, carbonara - no cream!!! Lentil curry no fat one gorgeous do allow chapati or pittas with that.
If you want to shift serious weight quickly you do need to be strict. I am not but maintain a good bmi of 22 by exercising lightly and eating well with treats
if I cut out wine, beer and treats... I'd fade!

Piffle, how long could it take to drop 20 lbs of body fat? I exercise but I do eat what I want, really - ie. I eat healthily but also eat quite a lot of crap in addition

Loads of studies show exercise doesn't make you lose weight. Loads of benefits - it makes you live longer, less likely have more energy and strength, be more toned etc etc etc, but it doesn't, on its own, make you thinner.

If you are losing inches don't worry about the scales. Muscle weighs more than fat. And after all aren't we all hoping to be healthier and look better? It sounds like you are and do

hey me again

20lbs of body fat is a v. big change and would take a v. long time - but perfectly possible - , are you sure you've got your calcs right?

Can't agree there msD. I have been on various diets over the last 10 yrs. Have lost weight - nearly 2 stone on the lc diet I followed for a long time. And undoubtedly I got slimmer. But it wasn't until I started running more seriously and regularly that I began to really change my bodyshape. Don't know what I weigh and don't really care TBH.

hello, Hatcam

it would take me to a low BMI - 18 - but to what I was pre-dd!!

how long could it take? years?

losing one at a time and maintains the loss is best. Aim for small achievable loss 1-2 every 1-2 weeks once you've lost about 5-7lbs, focus on maintaining that before trying to lose more... You do need to change the way you eat IMHO
the gi diet is excellent. It has changed the way I eat and live without using it for weight loss just for health and energy... And moodswings!

There are no studies that show that exercise makes you lose WEIGHT. I didn't say it wouldn't make you look better eg more toned, but it doesn't make the scales shift. It's your diet that does that. I hate exercise but do it so I don't completely fall apart as I get older, but I have no illusions that it will make the scales move.

yes, I need to change what I eat really, can no longer get away with eating the way I used to - ie. whatever and staying v slim

what's your typical day, Piffle?

Report
dinny · 03/06/2008 14:03

yes, isn't it 90% diet and 10% exercise, unless an elite athelete or something?

18 BMI is very low... Why not aim for 21-22
I'm 5ft 6 just under 10 stone and always get told how slim I look. Why the desire for 18?

You said it didn't make you slimmer msD. That was what I was taking issue with. I agree about the weight though

MsDemeanor · 03/06/2008 14:05

Ok, you are right, when I said slimmer, I meant lighter. And I agree they are not the same (blooming pedants everywhere, mutter, mutter )

Piffle, I am 10.8 and 5.7

Just because I used to be that thin and felt AMAZING when I was, sooooo confident in a bikini, would love to see if could do it again!!

Might I tentatively suggest you try running as well or instead of some of the other cardio stuff? It works.

typical day... I'm a former bulimic btw and still struggle with eating first thing...

Tea with semi skimmed milk

About 9-10am bowl of Dorset cereal muesli suggested serving followed. With semi skim
fruit smoothie innocents normally about 150 mls

Snack if any almonds. Or maybe rich tea biscuit or 2

Lunch
soup and pitta
apple
more tea!!!!

Afternoon snack mandarin raisins or Carnot sticks and hummus.

Dinner... Tonight is lamb steak with herb crust with leafy salad and jersey potatoes. About 150gm meat serving and 3-4 small spuds. Tiny bit of butter

Rarely eat pudding but sometimes have icecream or rice pudding as a treat.
drink 1-2 cans of beer 3-4 nights per week as well.

I work out ha ha
on the wii fit gently as am recovering from bad SPD
I don't have a sweet tooth I know I am blessed!

mm, interesting, Piffle - v balanced diet

my downfall is definitely evening snacking as find it hard to eat enough in the day

Report
Piffle · 03/06/2008 14:26

I rarely eat after 8pm... But happily drink!!!
plus I chug a lot of water in the day....
have lots more energy and more stable moods eating like this though. Worth it for that alone

It's a bizarre belief that 'exercise does not make you lose weight'. Assuming we are talking about cardio and not weight training, of course (sufficient) exercise makes you lose weight because it helps you consume more calories than you eat.
