Body Dysmorphia

I don't really know how to title this thread so hope ok.

DH and DS keep referring to me as 'skinny' and 'bones' and some other words which I just don't see in the mirror the the level they go on about.

I have lost a lot of weight. Sine the beginning of this year, I've gone from a size 12/14 to 6/8 but, at 5'2", I don't feel that makes me 'skinny'.

I'm hovering just below 10 stone and want to lose at least another stone before the year ends.

Is 6/8 'skinny' or just normal?

This new sizing is unchartered territory for me, so I really don't know, but they make me feel weird about wanting to lose more weight.

Am I doing the right thing? Is going below 6/8 ok based on my current weight?

My aim is to be mid-range in the healthy BMI scale.

I thought I'd put it other there to people who might actually know instead of comparing to me to how I used to be.

I think it depends how people carry their weight & particularly if people are used to you looking a certain way. My brother was very ill & lost a good few stone, as it was due to illness a lot was muscle & he looked gaunt. He was still a healthy BMI but he just didn't look right to me.

basinbasin · 06/09/2025 04:58

I wouldn't really pay attention to size as height & bone structure make a difference.

StayAliveJessicaHyde · 06/09/2025 12:40

10 stone at 5'2 is just in the overweight BMI category so not skinny at all. I think we as a society have been come accustomed to seeing overweight people and have normalised it to some extent. If you'd feel better at 9 stone then go for it! It's a healthy weight for your height.

I'm 5'3.5 8 1/2 stone and my mum is always banging on about how skinny I am. My BMI is 21 so perfectly healthy and while I'm slim I'm definitely not skinny.

MeridaBrave · 06/09/2025 12:49

If you are 10 stone at 5 2, and 6/8 you must have a lot of muscle.

I’m 5 4 and 9 stone 6, very muscular and a size 8/10. In reality I can’t wear some size 8 tops due to shoulder muscles or biceps.

At that height 9 stone would be healthy. Do you know how your bodyfat and muscle mass compared to average?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 06/09/2025 12:54

You're not too skinny.
They are just used to seeing you heavier.
I doubt your suffering from body dismorphia.
Their eyes will catch up.

Brownhairdontcare · 06/09/2025 12:57

I'm 5 foot 4 and weigh about 8 stone 4 and I promise you I am not skinny

Gettingfitorbust · 06/09/2025 18:07

If you are size 6/8 I wouldn’t have thought you have another stone to lose. Do you have a friend whose opinion you trust?

CeffylCoch · 23/09/2025 16:49

I’m 5’4 and 9 stone and am size 8-10. Are you sure you’re in the right sizes? I know everyone carries differently & sizing varies wildly!
I need to lose half a stone to get back to my ideal weight. You will have a lot of comments as people are used to seeing you bigger.

Why not lose half a stone first then see how you feel/look?

Octopus45 · 23/09/2025 18:57

Sorry, but how on earth are you size 6/8 at just under 10 stone and 5ft2. I am 5ft 4, just over 9st and have to buy size 12 jeans.

Onlyinthrees · 23/09/2025 19:27

Body Dysmorphia is a form of OCD where you are obsessively concerned about one or more areas of perceived flaws, and worry about it/ compulsively try to fix it. People with eating disorders often have distorted body image. Is this what you mean rather than dysmorphia?

AreYouBrandNew · 23/09/2025 22:45

@MargaritaPearl just checking you are in the UK and referring to UK size 6/8? Numbers don’t quite make sense at that BMI

Sorry, but how on earth are you size 6/8 at just under 10 stone and 5ft2. I am 5ft 4, just over 9st and have to buy size 12 jeans.

Im 5ft 2, weigh 9 stone 4 and wear size 8 jeans - and still look like a buddha

Everyones body shape is different

I dont have anything below the waist. My weight is around my mid rift - between boobs and belly button. I have skinny shoulders and arms, no bum and legs like match sticks but Im round and flabby everywhere else. Whilst my BMI is within the healthy range by body fat is still pretty high

For 5ft 2, I could go as low as 7,5 stone - according to the NHS charts. 8.5 is my happy weight - where the belly goes, but I cant seem to get there , my body has decided 9.4 it is. I can, if I near on starve myself get to 9 stone but I maintain at 9.4

@MargaritaPearl everyone calls me skinny, says I dont need to lose any more, but that's because they had got used to the supersize me - Ive been over weight for years and just touching obese for a few years before I decided to shift it . Up to my mid 40's I never weighed more then 8.5, then it piled on , till I weighed in at 11.5 , so my grandkids had only ever known me as fat

Doornon · 25/09/2025 07:56

I don’t think you are too skinny but it depends where it’s carried. OP might be muscle weight as well? I am 5’5 and size 8-10 but I fluctuate up and down 10st to 10st 7. I have big wide hips and all my weight is lower half, but a thigh gap (due to hip positioning) and someone accused me of being too slim I was like are you ok? I am obviously not too skinny. When I started to get into building muscles the BMI chart started to matter a bit less, I don’t mind having a BMI of 24 and having a decent muscle mass, that’s still healthy
