Do I look 3-5 stone overweight?

I know I’m overweight, absolutely.

I also know we shouldn’t take much notice of BMI because it’s a load of rubbish. But I checked anyway to see what a normal healthy range would be for my height/age and it’s coming up with between 6st 11lbs, and 9st 2lbs. I’m 12st 2lbs currently, I have a 5 and 3 year old and until recently had a 9-5 WFH job so I got too comfortable too close to the fridge 🤣

Even as a teen I’ve always had wider hips, bigger thighs and I was an E cup at 14. So I’ve always seen myself as on the curvier side. I’m much more jiggly now after two kids but I cannot ever imagine myself to be 7stone?! I was really shocked to see that I should lose 3-5 stone! I was expecting maybe 2-3.. but over 3 seems impossible without having a breast reduction 🤣

ps… ignore my extremely discoloured bra and non-matching undies.. it was a comfort day 🤣

No matter my size my boobs never change. I recently tipped the scale at 5stone heavier than when I was 22, my cup size was the same. When I was pregnant and then breast feeding, my boobs never got any bigger.

when a friend of mine loses weight, the first things to shrink are her boobs

Presumably your back size /bra band size got bigger

the cup size is a ratio not a fixed size. So 32d is a much smaller boob than a 36d

Mine barely changes
i lost 3 stone and went from a 36JJ to a 32KK so just made it harder for myself to find bras but no volume change. Gained weight and went up one size to a 34KK

But that is a massive change. You went from 36 to 32 so the kk is a huge reduction from the JJ as the cup size relates to the band size.

A 36JJ has much bigger cups that a 32JJ. The cup sizes are completely different. It’s not the same size cup just on a smaller band. It’s a ratio. Not a defined cup measurement.

This shows what I mean. So if you went from 36 JJ to 32KK your boobs did get much smaller

I get bra sizing but it’s the same volume - it’s a sister size
36JJ
34K
32KK
are all the same size - edited to add I mean the same volume in size

realslimshade · 30/08/2025 17:28

Here. It’s exactly the same size
if a 32KK was too small in the band I would wear a 34K, and if that was too tight I would wear a 36JJ
you need to drop a cup if you go up a band to get the same volume and if you go down a band you go up a cup

I would say 3-4 stone. And your breasts will reduce in size as you lose weight.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 31/08/2025 00:54

FWIW, on the bra size topic, I've lost 21kg and am still wearing the same bras, having just tightened up the back and shoulder straps.

SemperIdem · 31/08/2025 01:01

BMI serves well enough for anyone who isn’t a professional athlete.

The weight ranges are pretty broad. I’m at the top end of “healthy weight” for my height but look my best a stone or so lighter. I look unwell at the lowest point of the “healthy weight” for my height, because my build isn’t suited to it. So it may well be that you personally suit being at the higher range of healthy weight for your height.

Oblomov25 · 31/08/2025 07:12

Your back size and volume of bust will of course change as you lose weight.

I think we have gotten used to seeing overweight people and have lost a bit of reality.

You do look like you need to lose around 3-5 stone.

And I say this with kindness having been in the same position a few years ago and have lost around 3-4 stone myself.
And even when I lost weight I was struggling with belly fat, and it took me a long time to realize that you can’t out exercise a bad diet.

Eating clean makes such a difference all round health wise.

good luck OP

This.

People of a healthy weight honestly have very little fat. Think about how big your bones and organs are - then all of the rest is fat. Your waist or hips measurement could probably drop by half.

Millions of people in the same boat OP. You’re not alone but if you can tackle it you will be much healthier.

socks1107 · 31/08/2025 09:33

I think we’ve normalised larger bodies and that’s why you believe you look ok. I was there this time last year, didn’t believe I needed to loose weight but now having lost some realise that I did need to loose weight.
you probably do need to loose 3-4 stone to have a healthier body

God, if I read this tired old trope one more time on Mumsnet I'm going to go mad!!

READ WHAT SHE'S SAID. Literally the first thing she says in her OP is "I know I'm overweight, absolutely". What she goes on to say is that she's surprised to be told she could lose 5 stone. Nowhere is she denying that she could lose some weight, infact she says "I was expecting 2 to 3".

If she lost 5 stone she would have the lowest possible healthy BMI. That's not something to aim for is it?

TalkToTheHand123 · 31/08/2025 17:44

If the OP is overweight, I want to be as well. OP looks great.

SardinesOnGingerbread · 31/08/2025 17:46

Yes, I do, but I also think you look lovely and you've got excellent norks. I too am a little chubby at present and I also think I look not bad.

YellowSubmarine994 · 31/08/2025 17:51

Remember it's not every saying you should lose 5 stone. It's saying please god don't loose more than 5 or your health would be at risk as you'd be underweight. That said, if you want honest opinions, I also do think you would feel healthier for losing 3 stone. I'm losing a lot of weight myself (much more than 3 stone to go) so please don't think I'm coming from a place of judgement!

TangledUp679 · 31/08/2025 18:23

Yes, you look 3-5 stone overweight.

Speaking as someone who’s 3 stone overweight myself.

BMI is a large range though. I have a very similar type of figure to you, with a big chest and big hips. I find that right in the middle of the BMI healthy weight range is the best for me. So for you that would be about 8 stone.

ChangingWeight · 31/08/2025 18:34

Autumnleaves82 · 29/08/2025 11:46

Well done @ChangingWeight I wondered if you’d mind sharing what your current diet/exercise is? Do you track calories? I slowly gained a stone over the last couple of years and I’ve got around 10 pounds to lose to get back to my weight that I feel happiest at (similar to your current weight).

Thank you!

I don’t track calories. I exercise frequently so the amount I eat is usually tied to that! I eat more healthily than I used to though so on the days I eat more, it’s not on snacks but just more protein or larger servings of my dinner. I go to reformer Pilates a few times a week, alongside strength training at the gym.

Look up GrowWithJo on YouTube.

Her workouts are really accessible, even for people who have never exercised. They aren't intimidating at all.

They are a good stepping stone into building a habit of exercising regularly, without feeling overwhelmed and more likely to give up.

Thanks
