Do I look 3-5 stone overweight?

Obsesetits · 27/08/2025 09:04

I know I’m overweight, absolutely.

I also know we shouldn’t take much notice of BMI because it’s a load of rubbish. But I checked anyway to see what a normal healthy range would be for my height/age and it’s coming up with between 6st 11lbs, and 9st 2lbs. I’m 12st 2lbs currently, I have a 5 and 3 year old and until recently had a 9-5 WFH job so I got too comfortable too close to the fridge 🤣

Even as a teen I’ve always had wider hips, bigger thighs and I was an E cup at 14. So I’ve always seen myself as on the curvier side. I’m much more jiggly now after two kids but I cannot ever imagine myself to be 7stone?! I was really shocked to see that I should lose 3-5 stone! I was expecting maybe 2-3.. but over 3 seems impossible without having a breast reduction 🤣

ps… ignore my extremely discoloured bra and non-matching undies.. it was a comfort day 🤣

You look very similar to me and I'm currently one stone down into my three and a half stone weight loss regime.
So I'm really sorry but yes I would say at least three stone overweight 😔
It's hard isn't it?

Comedycook · 27/08/2025 09:39

I'm 5'3'... I'm a size 16 and weigh 12 and a half stone...when I looked at my bmi and what would be a healthy weight for me i was horrified to see that I'd be a healthy weight if I lost just under five stone....I've been 9 stone before and felt very slim. I'd be absolutely emaciated if I weighed under 8 stone and would probably have to starve myself to reach that. But as a pp said just take it a stone at a time and see how you feel... right now my goal is just to be in the 11 stone bracket

maowmaow · 27/08/2025 09:42

I think we have gotten used to seeing overweight people and have lost a bit of reality.

You do look like you need to lose around 3-5 stone.

And I say this with kindness having been in the same position a few years ago and have lost around 3-4 stone myself.
And even when I lost weight I was struggling with belly fat, and it took me a long time to realize that you can’t out exercise a bad diet.

Eating clean makes such a difference all round health wise.

good luck OP

Look up GrowWithJo on YouTube.

Her workouts are really accessible, even for people who have never exercised. They aren't intimidating at all.

They are a good stepping stone into building a habit of exercising regularly, without feeling overwhelmed and more likely to give up.

user2848502016 · 27/08/2025 09:44

You look about my size tbh, but I’m 5’4 so a little taller. More curvy than fat.
In my younger days I’ve weighed as little as 8.5 stone which was still in the healthy BMI range for me but I actually looked really slim and definitely wasn’t eating enough. There’s no way I could get down to that weight now unless I was seriously ill!
A few years ago I got down to 10.5 stone which is still a little overweight but I was a size 10/12 and happy with my size - I would like to get down to that weight again so probably need to lose 2 stone (not weighed myself recently but am in a size 14 now).
I don’t think I’m huge at all but I feel more comfortable when I weigh a bit less.

museumum · 27/08/2025 09:47

Depending on your body composition BMI can be inaccurate for the very short. Basically it overestimates your fat because shorter people don't always have proportionally smaller organs, skull etc. (sometimes they do).
If you are hovering near the top of the 'healthy' BMI but are very short I would invest in a body composition test at the gym as you might find you are ok. Also, measure your waist to get an idea of your belly fat related health risks.
When I was younger I was most definitely healthy at around BMI 26 despite what the BMI said, because of a combination of short height and high muscle (I had access to good information through a sport I did).

DiscoBob · 27/08/2025 09:48

My mum is your height and weighs 8.5 stone, which is the middle of her healthy BMI. But she has much smaller boobs, legs- build wise. So if you aim for about 9.5 or 10 you'll probably be alright. You don't look really fat at all though. Your body is a curvy shape.

Fozzleyplum · 27/08/2025 09:48

At a guesstimate you probably need to lose 3 stone and then you can see how that looks/ feels. You look very well proportioned, so I suspect you look good in clothes despite the weight gain.

I'd be looking at a way of changing your eating over time, so that you lose weight steadily and adapt to a new way of eating, rather than going on a " diet". I know that's hardly ground breaking advice, but a (doctor) friend who knows a lot more about the science than I do, reckons that's the way yo do it.

PremiumMoon · 27/08/2025 10:05

3 - yes, but 5 may be too much for you.

My BMI is currently 32 and I am a 38G bra. You definitely look slimmer than I was at BMI 41 but you do look like your BMI is around what mine is now, and I need to lose another 3 st to get down to BMI 25. Last time I was nearly down that low I felt pretty damn good at BMI 26 though. In my twenties I had a BMI of 22.5, that felt great but I accept I will struggle to get down that low now.

I think getting 2 st off will make a big difference - I would just concentrate on that.

Astrabees · 27/08/2025 10:15

I'm 5'3" and I feel quite overweight at 12 stone and at my best half a stone under top level healthy weight, so around 9st 7lb. If I get thinner than this it really shows in my face. I was 7st 7lb when I got married and looked great but as you get older I think you look better weighing a bit more, though still a healthy weight. I have a number of old school friends I see quite often and the very thin ones do tend to look older.

arcticpandas · 27/08/2025 10:16

I think you look gorgeous. Maybe lose a stone or 2 for your health but looks wise I would be happy to look like you with the curves in the right place.

FiveBarGate · 27/08/2025 10:19

@Obsesetits please don't go too far into the 'I need to lose at least three stone ' mentality.

All that will do is put you off trying and probably make you obsessed with food.

Cut out snacks and reduce portion sizes. Get yourself a step counting watch and do a certain number every day. It encourages you to go out for that extra walk once the kids are in bed

No, you won't drop stones doing that but you will lose something.

I bet if you lost a stone or even half a stone you'd feel loads better and that's what counts.

Give yourself an achievable goal and enjoy the feeling of getting there rather than aiming at the, if not impossible, extremely unlikely.

Katebridgerton25 · 27/08/2025 10:20

Having lost just over 3 stone myself putting my bmi at 21.5, you’d be shocked where it comes off. I hadn’t even considered all the places fat will melt away from and originally only planned to lose about 27lbs, but once I had done that and still had fat to lose from my abdomen and wasn’t happy, I just kept going and it ended up being 47lbs instead of the 27lbs. Hands, feet, arms, ankles, décolleté, face, neck, back, hips, thighs, calves etc. it all comes off everywhere and it’s surprising how much we hold.

For references I’m tall, 5ft 10, went from

197lbs bmi 28

planned to go to 170lbs bmi 24

Ended up at 150lbs bmi 21.5

so yes, you may not feel like you look like you need to lose 3-5 stone to be a healthy bmi, but once you’ve started it’s surprising how it comes off and you realise you’ve got it to lose.

orangegato · 27/08/2025 10:48

You must be my height as that’s my recommended weight range as well. Imagine being a weight staring with a 6 lol in my dreams. Being short is HARD having to eat less than a 10 year old to even maintain weight. I’ve lost 6ish pounds this year need the rest gone but my god it’s slooooow.

SayDoWhatNow · 27/08/2025 10:49

The healthy weight range quoted will be what puts you in the BMI range 18.5-25. Realistically, you don't want to be at the bottom end of that.

Don't worry about trying to lose 3 stone all at once, just make some small lifestyle changes that overall trend towards healthier eating and a bit more activity and go from there.

whengodwasarabbit1 · 27/08/2025 10:53

You have a lovely curvy figure, I'm 5ft too and weigh around 8 - 8.5 stone, but im a different build and, sadly, i do not have your amazing boobs.
If you want to lose weight or tone up, I would recommend yoga with adriene and grow with jo on youtube. Mediterranean diet and lots of water works for me. I find that at our height, half a stone off shows quite noticeably on our figures.
Bmi is a guideline and everyone is different. How do you feel healthwise?

grapesandcheeseplease · 27/08/2025 10:56

how tall are you?

Yes I agree with this. It's all good and well saying it's fine, you are just curvy but (and I also say this from a place of kindness - I have been 5 stone overweight too) you probably need to lose at least 4 stone min. There are so many health issues with carrying extra weight long term, maybe not now whilst you are young but you are setting yourself up for problems further down the line. Don't risk it. Good luck!

Crikeyalmighty · 27/08/2025 10:57

i look very similar - am 5ft 4 and 13 stone 5, down from 15 stone since April ( not WLI) - realise I am overweight ( refuse to use the word obese) but yep dressed well in all fairness I don’t think I look that bad - my h isa good looking silver fox at 61 and he says I look good to him - o do bother though and I think that’s what makes a difference , whereas a lot slimmer I think I would feel the need to ‘bother’ somewhat less - I’m aiming at 10 stone 9 - which would still be overweight but only slightly - at 63 I would rather keep my face a bit plumper! I’m more bothered about being fitter.

ChrisMartinsKisskam · 27/08/2025 11:20

yes you could easily loose 4stone and still be slightly overweight

I weigh every day
bmi 19 /20
I’m 8.11 - 9stone max
5ft 6
waist is a 25 /26 and very flat
hip/34
in clothes I wear a 8/10

at eight stone i looked like a junkie waiting to die 😂

at 10 stone i looked healthier but could still fit in a size 10 clothes

at 13.8 I had a bmi of 31 and a 30 inch waist
I still didn’t look big / fat though as my shape was in proportion and I’ve never ever had a big belly

but I prefer the size I am now

Rizzz · 27/08/2025 11:24

You’re only 5ft OP.

If you’re 12 stone 2, that’s obviously very overweight.

I wouldn’t focus on whether it’s 3 or 5 stone.

Costcogroupie · 27/08/2025 11:27

Yes you do. And apologies for being blunt, but I'm the same.

Chewbecca · 27/08/2025 11:32

I'm your height as well, with large boobs and large bones so I would look emaciated at the lower end of the range and it would not be sustainable unless I was ill.

I'm slim / very comfortable at 10 stone. Haven't been there for many years though 🤣 11 would be a fab balance to aim for.

KPPlumbing · 27/08/2025 12:00

You look overweight, but have a really good shape and it's distrubuted well. I'd assume you had 2 stone to lose, but I'm generally clueless about weights.

SilenceInside · 27/08/2025 12:01

Your BMI is 33.2 which is well into the obese range, so yes you would need to lose around 4 stone to be in the healthy weight range. Looking at your body shape at the moment I would say that it's very definitely possible to lose 4 stone and for that not to be a ridiculous amount of weight to lose.
