Do I look 3-5 stone overweight?

I know I’m overweight, absolutely.

I also know we shouldn’t take much notice of BMI because it’s a load of rubbish. But I checked anyway to see what a normal healthy range would be for my height/age and it’s coming up with between 6st 11lbs, and 9st 2lbs. I’m 12st 2lbs currently, I have a 5 and 3 year old and until recently had a 9-5 WFH job so I got too comfortable too close to the fridge 🤣

Even as a teen I’ve always had wider hips, bigger thighs and I was an E cup at 14. So I’ve always seen myself as on the curvier side. I’m much more jiggly now after two kids but I cannot ever imagine myself to be 7stone?! I was really shocked to see that I should lose 3-5 stone! I was expecting maybe 2-3.. but over 3 seems impossible without having a breast reduction 🤣

ps… ignore my extremely discoloured bra and non-matching undies.. it was a comfort day 🤣

6st 11lb -9st 2lb is basically 7-9 stone. And yes. At 5’ tall this sounds right. At 9 stone you would still look curvy at 9stone

honestly, you look very overweight. There are no points on your body where you can see any bones. Whilst you shouldn’t be bony, people have lost sight of wfat healthy looks like. Slightly visible hip bones, shin bones and slight awareness of ribs is healthy. You are carrying a lot of excess body fat. At 5’ you would be looking at being around a UK side 4-8 to be healthy depending on build. It’s way under average height. You would expect to be equally under average clothing size. I

5 stone seems an awful lot to lose given your build/boobs - I can’t understand the posters suggesting this would be a good aim tbh. Why would you need to be at the bottom end of the BMI range for your height?

Sure it’s not healthy to be very overweight but we don’t all need to be just above underweight. I’ve fluctuated around a BMI of 24 for most of my adult life. I’m quite stocky and muscly (under some good padding). No health professional or doctor has ever suggested I need to lose weight, but according to the advice of several posters here I could do with losing two stone!

If you want to lose weight OP I’d suggest you aim for the top end of recommended BMI and give yourself a good year to get there. There’s more to life than the scales. Good luck!

Because the boobs are due to obesity rather than simply big boobs. Women are always shocked when they get to a healthy weight and discover they have very average boobs.

I’m 5’ and thought I needed to lose 3 but now I have there’s easily a stone of flab around my belly. If you’re just losing weight then I’d say 3-4 but if you work out and gain muscle then 2-3 maybe?

do you know how unlikely women will have 1 stone of muscle if they train. The actual amount you gain in weight is tiny unless you are a serious body builder and even then it is not likely a stone. And that’s lifting 50-200kg. Not 3kg weights

somethingnewandexciting · 27/08/2025 13:42

2 or 3 - you have large boobs which these things don't take into account

She has large boobs because she’s overweight. And yes take body differences into account. That’s why the range was 7-9 stone. That’s a 2 stone difference to take into account boobs and body width

You didn’t say in your OP (I see you did later!) but going by your ‘healthy weight’ range of 6st 11 and 9st 2 I’m guessing you’re 5’ tall? If so then I’d say losing three stone would be entirely reasonable.

I’m 5’ on a good day and I also take the BMI chart with a very large pinch of salt, the lower end of that estimate would be far too low for me as I don’t have a slight build (very broad shouldered B cup) and most of my life I’ve been happiest at just under 9 stone.

I’m 11 stone at the moment and a few weeks into trying to lose two stone and hope to settle at around 8st 12lb - 9st 0lb

If (when!) I manage it I’ll still be a solid size 12 and technically overweight but I trying to go lower - I know I couldn’t even do it - would look too thin and and be unsustainable for me.

realslimshade · 27/08/2025 16:13

I imagine you could - I’m about 6 stone overweight and to get to the bottom of my BMI could lose 8 stone

I changed my crisps to Aldi lentil puffs which I can’t seem to find anymore, so on the lookout for something around 80cals a bag.

I had never had a babybel until June this year but they have been a daily staple 😂

Walkers French Fries are around 80 calories. Popchips and baked crisps are all about that number too. Be aware that many now come in a ‘grab bag’ (two portions) though. Sneaky.

I used to love them (and Frazzles and don’t even get me started on Snack-Jacks!) but I’ve given up all crisps now, they were not helping me. I found that rice cakes/crisp type snacks just made me ravenous for more and more, and then more food in general later.

I do Fast 800 now and the lower amount of wholemeal only carbs are what are enabling me to stick to it.

I’d never had a babybel until a few weeks ago. They are delicious!

Having lost just over 3 stone myself putting my bmi at 21.5, you’d be shocked where it comes off. I hadn’t even considered all the places fat will melt away from and originally only planned to lose about 27lbs, but once I had done that and still had fat to lose from my abdomen and wasn’t happy, I just kept going and it ended up being 47lbs instead of the 27lbs. Hands, feet, arms, ankles, décolleté, face, neck, back, hips, thighs, calves etc. it all comes off everywhere and it’s surprising how much we hold.

For references I’m tall, 5ft 10, went from

197lbs bmi 28

planned to go to 170lbs bmi 24

Ended up at 150lbs bmi 21.5

so yes, you may not feel like you look like you need to lose 3-5 stone to be a healthy bmi, but once you’ve started it’s surprising how it comes off and you realise you’ve got it to lose.

I’d agree with this and I’m almost a foot shorter than you.

When I first started losing weight I thought I just had a belly but as the first stone (another to go) came off it went from my bust, back and arms, and from the waist down I’m still a size 14/16, although the belly is much smaller (if I pull it in!)

For me to get a waist measurement I know from past experience that I have to be 9 stone, no more. I’ll never be less than a size 12 due to my shoulder and hip bone width but no rolls of fat and a flat -ish stomach.

MummytoE · 27/08/2025 17:08

BMI isn't really a load of crap. For most people it's a good guide and indicator. I think if you were very muscular that's when it starts to be a bit dodgy

JohnTheRevelator · 27/08/2025 17:16

I look roughly the same, and I've got another 3 stone to lose. I've lost 7.5 stone (105 lbs) so far and so many people tell me that I've lost enough and I don't need to lose any more. But my BMI is 31.3. I'm 13 stone 6 lbs at the moment (I'm 5 ft 5 in) and need to get down to 10 stone 6 lbs to be within the acceptable BMI range.

Notellinganyone · 27/08/2025 17:38

I’m 5ft 2 and 12 stone. Very definitely overweight. When I was a teenager I was about 7 stone - I’d look ill if I weighed that now. A few years ago I got down to 9 stone 8 and that felt great. Age makes a difference. You look
like you could lose two stone to me.

VerityUnreasonble · 27/08/2025 17:43

Fwiw I would avoid going under 8st / 50kg. You can't give blood if you weigh less than 50kg and some medication doses change / prescribers get a bit angsty about if you weigh less than that.

I often think the low range numbers for BMI for short people are impractical for real life.

MyGreyStork · 27/08/2025 17:48

Yes you look about 4 stone overweight, at 5ft you’re quite short so you look bigger with extra weight.

I am also 5ft and 10 stone 7. Biggest I've ever been. I have a double chin :( hate having my photo taken

I started weight watchers 3 days ago. Would love to have others to share the journey xx

Me, today!. 5ft nothing and 10 stone 7

I’m 8 weeks into the fast 800 and am down one stone exactly, so about a third of the way there. I’m 54 so very pleased so far.

Well done. Good on you. I think some people can’t handle the new you so tell you to stop. If your bmi still puts you into the obese territory it’s ridiculous anyone telling you you are to thin. Your goals sound reasonable It’s not easy and you’ve done so well

Wow that is such an achievement, well done! I started at 12st 2 and by the time I got to 10st my DM said I had lost enough and to not lose any more 🙄 so it happens to all of us. I find it so bizarre. I’m now a further 18lbs down and she told me I look ‘gaunt’ - I absolutely do not, I have a very full round face and are a normal healthy weight 😄

littleburn · 27/08/2025 21:22

I’m a little taller than you (5’2”) and was the same starting weight. I’m also naturally curvy with boobs (GG cup) and a bum. I’ve lost around 2 and a half stone to get down to 9st 8lb, which is at the top end of a healthy BMI for my height, and have gone from a size 14 to a 8/10. At our height (or shortness!) the lower end of the healthy BMI can be very low, but I think how realistic/achievable that is really depends on your build. If you’re looking to lose weight and sustain it I’d aim for the upper end of a healthy BMI as you’re curvy, definitely not a 5 stone weight loss!

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 27/08/2025 21:29

I’m camping. My teenage son just saw this over my shoulder in the tent & said “she doesn’t need to lose weight”. Teenage daughter then asked to see and said “she’s curvalicious”.

Coconutter24 · 27/08/2025 22:51

Given your height I’d say 3-4 stone to be a healthy weight. You are overweight but you know that. You do have a lovely shape but it could be better with less body fat

It's worrying that they see clearly overweight people as not needing to lose weight.

I guess because it's normalised for them, growing up with over 60% of adults being overweight.

It's what they've always seen around them.

CrimsonStoat · 27/08/2025 22:59

You're about my height and look like I did when I was about 3.5 stone above the very top end of my healthy weight.
