How much loss before you physically see progress?

I reached my first milestone today - 1 stone lost so far! Still loads to go but still happy with this.

My husband said he can’t see any difference (he meant this kindly, he always says I’ve been no different from before kids / after kids - he’s too kind to hurt my feelings!) but I feel kind of deflated.

to be fair. I can’t notice any difference either, other than clothes feel slightly better on. How much before you can physically see changes?

Well done! I lost 2 stone before I started to feel different, and it was about the same time that other people started to notice and comment.

MJalltheway · 02/08/2025 22:19

It'll really depend on your height and how much you have to lose. In my case it was over 2 stone before I went down a single dress size (tall and size 18 to start with). I've now lost 3.5 stone and have really noticed a huge difference only in the last few weeks. Friends/colleagues don't often comment though unless I've already talked to them about losing weight!

woodlandwonder17 · 02/08/2025 22:27

Okay thank you. That’s very interesting. And well done both on your weight loss - that’s amazing!

I am tall (5’10) and luckily carry my weight quite well but I was 14st 8, now 13st 8. Trying to get down to 11st 8! How tall are you if you don’t mind me asking? @MJalltheway

I'm 5ft 7, weighed 12 St 7 and want to get to 10st 7. I've lost a stone and a half and people have just started noticing.

Just back from hols and I really felt I could see the difference in the mirror in summer clothes.
Also, people are often polite and don't like to mention weight loss in case they imply you were fat before.

ServantToAFurryRuler · 02/08/2025 22:29

I think it depends on how much you have to lose. So if you have 2 stone to lose and lose a stone I'm pretty sure everyone would start noticing.

If you've 5 stone to lose, then yes nobody might notice the first stone coming off as you would still be quite large.

As for me I had 7 stone to lose to get to the top of normal BMI (shocking I know but that's another story). I'm 3 stone down with 4 still to go and nobody has said a word to me. That said I live on my own with a dog so no man in the house.

I did ask a friend last time I saw her if she noticed me getting smaller and she said not really. She saw me 4 weeks prior and then I lost another 6lb but she said she hadn't noticed.

I'm quite happy for nobody to notice as I feel ashamed I got to this stage in the first place.

I'm worrying now about saggy skin cos I'm in my fifties now. So far not too bad but have noticed a bit of sag at top of my arms and inner top thighs so I think I probably have to start doing some gentle exercises soon to help tighten things up.
I'm eating plenty of protein and drinking water so not sure what else I can do really. I've been rubbing cream/oil into my stomach, tops of arms, inner thighs etc to try and help the skin 'bounce back'

Your husband if he sees you everyday might find it difficult to see if it is a gradual process of a small loss every week.

Someone who hasn't seen you for a while might notice it more.

I'm losing it pretty slowly - some weeks 2lb, some weeks 1lb and some weeks nothing. In some ways that is frustrating but it's the best way to minimise loose skin anyway.

I probably lost more the first few weeks but now 4 months down the weight loss is going slow.

I'm not on weight loss drugs btw. I'm hoping I can lose it all on my own but we'll see.

I lost 2.5 stone before anyone at all noticed (expect my DH of course)

As soon as I got to 3 stone EVERYONE noticed.

woodlandwonder17 · 02/08/2025 22:39

@ServantToAFurryRuleryou have done so so well!!! Well done and keep going, you’re doing it the best way. Slowly is best as it’s more sustainable. I am trying to do the same, and I am not on the weight loss injections either ( I have a sickness phobia - probably would have tried them if I didn’t though!)

hopefully after another stone some noticeable changes might appear :) just another 8ish weeks to go - ahh!

I’m 5”8 and recently went from 11 stone 11 to 10 stone 9 and it’s noticeable

currentlybrunette · 02/08/2025 22:48

Over four stone before I started to really see it. I’m tall and very overweight and it came off all over so while the scale was moving all my clothes still fit (but better). I can see it now. My clothes are definitely on the verge of being properly too big. I still have another 6 stone to go for a healthy BMI.

if you’re quite big it can take what feels like forever to see any visual progress but it will come.

BrendaSmall · 02/08/2025 22:50

I’ve lost 59 lb and a couple of people are only just starting to notice and that’s people I don’t see regularly

SilenceInside · 02/08/2025 23:07

As others have said it really depends how much if your body weight that stone represents, and how tall you are. It took about 4 or 5 stone for people to really notice that I’d lost weight, but I started at 22 stone and I’m not particularly tall. Now I’ve lost over 9 stone, everyone notices, all the time.

Anothersolotrip · 02/08/2025 23:08

I recommended taking photos, take a new one each month/every couple of weeks in the same underwear and you will see the difference, even if you don't notice them in the mirror. Thats what kept me motivated!

MeridaBrave · 02/08/2025 23:09

I’ve lost a stone, and I only have another half a stone to go, and no one has noticed.

IndieRocknRoll · 02/08/2025 23:13

I’m 5ft and people started to notice before I’d even lost a stone. I’ve lost about 1st 4lb now and a lot of my clothes look too baggy so I’d say I’ve dropped a dress size.
its all relative though. As a % of my overall weight a stone is quite a bit though it wouldn’t be if I was 6 inches taller.

I'm the same height as you, but started at 15st 12. I'm currently 12st 4, aiming for 11st. The third stone made much more difference than the first two and the last half a stone has made even more difference again!
well done on your own loss! I've taken up exercise and am so enjoying it, I feel so much better than I have done for years. 😁

Dutchhouse14 · 03/08/2025 12:28

I'm the same OP I've lost just over a stone, no ones noticed, my clothes feel better but definitely not gone done a dress size.
And to lose this stone has been slow progress!!
I need to loss an another 2 stone so a third of the way there
