Never thought I’d be asking this, but… am I losing weight too quickly?

I’m 39, 5’5”. On the 6th June (so less than two weeks ago) I was 59.95kg, or just over 9st 6lb. I started a diet on the 9th based mainly on calorie deficit and just eating more healthily, trying to get 10k steps in and doing a YouTube workout most days. As of today I weight 56.20kg - just shy of 8st 12lb. Yesterday I was 56.10kg, however I’m due on my period today and I’m a bit bloated.

Now I’m not complaining at all, but I’m a bit surprised by how quickly I’ve lost so much weight as it’s not like I was really that big to begin with… should I be concerned? Do I need to ease off a bit? Am I going to put half a stone back on the minute a burger passes my lips?

Id be concerned with anyone losing weight too quickly the rebound when you stop maintaining your current regime. Id say modify it a little and lose the weight slower so you have more of a chance of keeping it off when you decide your at your optimum weight goal and you no longer need to keep to what your already doing.

You've lost 8lb in two weeks, despite the fact you were a healthy weight to start with?
That's an insane weight loss, and if it was actually fat you would have to be eating no food at all to achieve that. So I would say a good chunk of it is water weight. Whenever I start a 'diet' I always lose very quickly in the first week or two as well and then it evens out.

Is your calorie deficit something around 500cals? If so you either:

  • have a serious medical condition which coincidentally only started the same week you began your diet OR
  • most of your loss is water weight and if you carry on going how you are you will find the rapid loss settles into gradual loss

Are you resistance training and prioritsing protein? If you maintain this rate of loss around 50% will be muscle loss.

That said it has only been 2 weeks so I agree with others who have said a large proportion will be water weight. This is especially true if you have suddenly gone low carb as carbs retain water in your body.

I wouldn't worry at all. 8lbs in 2 weeks sounds drastic BUT tbph, a big poo could account for 3lbs 😂 Another 3lbs of water weight. It might 'only' be 2lbs of genuine weight loss (which is still great, but perfectly fine).

I imagine your loss will now slow right down to a lb a week or so...obviously if it continues at that rate see a GP but I don't think it's likely.

It’s probably a lot of water weight and will steady off.

LasVegass · 19/06/2025 12:26

You’ve been enthusiastically following your plan and most of that will be water anyway. It won’t continue ar that rate. Said not to dishearten you, but to reassure you.

I’m not disheartened at all! I have had a closer look at the scale statistics (I appreciate they’re not 100% accurate) and it looks like the biggest losses are body fat- 2.08kg, body water- 1.2 kg and muscle mass- 1.6kg. I’d be quite happy if it slows down now or I’d disappear entirely by the end of the month 😂

Wow, that’s amazing progress! But yeah it does sound a bit quick maybe your body’s just adjusting fast in the beginning. Just make sure you’re eating enough and feeling good. One burger won’t ruin anything promise! 🍔😊
