Flaming Healthy June!

Healthstartshere · 31/05/2025 20:30

June arrives tomorrow. I’m planning a super healthy (but realistic) month and would welcome anyone who would like to join me on 30 days of self improvement.

My aims are weight loss and cultivating a healthier body and mind. I plan to do this by adopting a healthier diet, reducing calories, increasing exercise, reducing alcohol intake, being kinder to myself and enjoying more fresh air and sleep.

I am jotting down a plan of how to do this right now (whilst finishing off the crisps). Come and join me for mutual encouragement of the likeminded, whatever your personal goals for June! 😊

That sounds a lovely trip for your son @Poisonwood Mine has just today reminded me we are to get out hillwalking soon.
Love you are still with us @Spudulica17 and good on you with the weight loss, and rollerskating!, I’ve not done that since showing off at centerparcs a few years ago and falling (literally) flat on my beetroot face 😳 . If you persevere with MFP and build up a bank of your own meals and recipes on it it gets much easier and quicker. They stay on it forever and you can just tweak saved recipes each time you use it.

I got the job thanks @Spudulica17 it’s a few months internal secondment but I’m super pleased to get it and should start soon. Yah!!

I’ve been to the gym this morning and gardening all afternoon. Bloody knackered now and the house is a bombsite. Something’s gotta give! Tomorrow is of course the last day of June. It would be lovely if folks logged on tomorrow and shared the highs/lows of their healthy June. This is a safe space (still with cake, but modestly portioned and mindfully consumed) 😂
Ps. Is Physio done @Monvelo ??

Monvelo · 29/06/2025 20:26

Bugger. No. I'd better do my physio! I actually went out with a bunch of friends to a pool spa and afternoon tea, very rare occurrence! All that sitting in the heat and water has worn me out!

Monvelo · 29/06/2025 20:38

I'm in a very different place in 2025, having been in my beloved run club for rubbish runners since 2013, done some cycling, even a triathlon, since hitting my 40s a few years ago degenerative issues with discs and ligaments have put a stop to my running and cycling. I am 1 stone heavier than I used to be. Slower. Less active. Sadder. I miss how I used to be and the act of running. I am trying to find a new normal. I'm trying to find the things I can do. New things I can enjoy. More pilates. Taking pain free walks with the kids in nice scenery can be a huge win. I'm making efforts to see more wildlife. I'm eating a bit more mindfully now that I won't just burn it off. A bit of calorie counting has been educational. The physio reminders have been a bonus! It's been good to do this, so thank you all.

Poisonwood · 29/06/2025 22:01

@Healthstartshere that’s great news re the secondment woohoo 🥳

@Monvelo learning how to be a different person to what you were used to can be incredibly difficult, and draining at the best of times. You have my every sympathy, hope it helps a little to know you have a wee cheerleading squad here!

I’ve had an up and down day - did a couple of hours of really good yoga, ate healthily and enjoyed it, but have been tired all day again. Even fell asleep at 5pm, and daytime naps are unheard of for me. Don’t think the early morning dawn cacophony is helping, the crowd seems to be arguing every morning at the minute!
Am looking forward to a weigh in tomorrow, thanks @Healthstartshere this really does feel a safe spot.

Poisonwood · 30/06/2025 07:30

Just weighed. In June I have lost 7lbs!! My water intake is a little higher but still have to definitely get better at drinking though. My muscle is increasing still which is great 💪.
@Healthstartshere how are you feeling now it’s the end of the month?

Poisonwood · 30/06/2025 07:32

Btw, the crows are my noisy dawn chorus - I don’t have a noisy crowd of paparazzi always waiting under my window 😂

Monvelo · 30/06/2025 09:36

Well done @Poisonwood ! That's ace!

I'm 5lb down this month!

It's crazy how much the scales vary though right, today I'm 2lb lighter than yesterday?! A reminder that the scales are not the most important thing I guess, being healthy and fitter to enjoy life is the ultimate goal 💪🏻

Poisonwood · 30/06/2025 10:14

@Monvelo that’s really great, well done 👍. I remember years ago getting down over tiny fluctuations on the scale then being reminded that something as simple as one cup of water more or less that day can make a difference…I chilled out after that and now look at long term trends.

Healthstartshere · 30/06/2025 21:13

Just realised I never posted my post part night!! :

Oh @Monvelo that sounds really tough., I always really admire runners and having to give that up for health issues must be a blow. But you have the capacity to find joy in other things and you obviously have the mindset to keep being healthy. Getting on top of the weight gain before it gets out of control is definitely the way to go.
thanks @Poisonwood I get tired often too, but do take naps I must confess.

Healthstartshere · 30/06/2025 21:24

Well done @Poisonwood & @Monvelo !! I lost 6lb so we have done pretty well, eh? 😀

I think we’ve all made big efforts to eat healthily, take exercise and be good to ourselves. I don’t know if I’m making assumptions, but I feel we might all be at a stage in life where being healthy and happy are the aim, rather than how good we look in a pair of jeans etc!
My stats were good on the machine at the gym - I’m apparently a year younger than I was at the start of June. Best of all I’ve loved having you guys to share with and I’ve really enjoyed hearing how you are getting on! I’m going to keep trying and posting. It’s been such a busy month in this household and I’m out tomorrow night after work, but I’ve about 3.5 weeks until my summer holiday so I’m really going to try and keep on being healthy and see what happens next. Anyone else up for it?( 🤞 )

So I have to just jump on to say I've been lurking in the background and you've all been a huge inspiration to me! It hasn't been the best month but it hasn't been the worst either and I've made some healthy changes.... so if you do continue for July, I'm in!

Monvelo · 30/06/2025 22:20

Nice! It's not as relevant as Flaming June, but I'll contribute a photo of a puffin that I took, I went to Skomer island a couple of weekends ago :) I'm up for July!

Monvelo · 30/06/2025 22:21

Hiya @Captainladder , welcome aboard!

Poisonwood · 30/06/2025 22:39

Hi @Captainladder 👋 little changes turn in to new habits quickly so way to go 💪.

I’m definitely in…a journey is made of little steps and it’s so much nicer walking them with like-minded people. Loving the pictures. That puffin picture is brilliant @Monvelo and @Healthstartshere Flaming June is hung above my mantelpiece, though the children have renamed her Lady Hestia.

Did you do your physio @Monvelo? I’ve done a walk on the shore and then two hours of yoga this evening, and eaten well all day. I did put some chia seeds in yoghurt earlier and was rather put off by just how much then it looked like frogspawn.

nodtik · 01/07/2025 06:16

Haven’t posted for a bit!

But 6.2lbs down……

I will absolutely take that 🙌

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/07/2025 06:39

Hi 👋 I lost 3lbs in June which isn’t too bad considering how many social things and other commitments we have had, plus 2 glorious weekends in a row. I’m bobbing around my lowest weight so far this year now, and a good month away from being under 11 stone which is numbers I’ve not seen in a long time. I’ve also done a lot of clearing out of my wardrobe and finally have some nice outfits and feel a bit better. It’s helped me to see what I actually need so yesterday I ordered some bits for my holiday. We go away in just under 6 weeks, I’m really excited as we are going abroad for the first time in a decade.

July will be another busy month, 2 dc leaving their respective schools so lots and lots of end of term things and it’s also my birthday in 2 weeks. That being said, I am determined to stick to my plan and make it work, not drink so much, and keep up my exercise routine and running. I know I will feel 100x better on holiday if I’ve focused myself rather than just given up, and it’s inevitable that I’ll gain while away.

Poisonwood · 01/07/2025 07:04

@nodtik and @thenewaveragebear1983 you’ve both done really well. Onwards and upwards (downwards on the scales lol) for us all.

Healthstartshere · 01/07/2025 10:20

Welcome @Captainladder , lovely to have you with us! My goodness @Poisonwood , your children are smart well educated cookies!
What an amazing photo @Monvelo is that a puffin? just so pleased it’s not a gannet 😂

congratulations on the weight loss @nodtik and @thenewaveragebear1983 smashing it! I always think a wardrobe clear out is inspiring, (even the ones involving tears of dismay, if anyone else has ever been there?!)

I don’t have time to post more as at work, but that’s July started so let’s get going. I’m out for a Chinese meal tonight after work and determined to make healthy choices ! Have a good day all.

Monvelo · 01/07/2025 20:43

Today I made it to swim "club" and swam 2000m! I can't often make it but an opportunity presented itself. It's a swim improvers course really but I don't book a proper block and just go when I can.

Spudulica17 · 01/07/2025 22:01

Yay @Healthstartshere congratulations on the job - great news. Definitely happy to keep going for July, I still have a stone to go but loving the accountability this gives us!

That’s a good idea about set foods in mfp, probably not the recommended way but I’m finding keeping breakfast to a minimum with just coffee and yoghurt is the easiest way to keep calories to my daily target 1400. think the heatwave has been a good appetite suppressant!

I’m another one who’s now mid forties and noticed a real change in my body, nice to have others in a similar boat. I just want to look the best for my age and stay healthy

Hello also to @Captainladder

Poisonwood · 01/07/2025 22:57

@Monvelo that’s a great swim! I bet you felt good after. Is there any way you can go more often?

@Spudulica17 the health ramifications of weight definitely go up a notch once you hit mid-forties don’t they.

I have had an incredibly busy and stressful day and not eaten much at all, or exercised. Not happy with that, so tomorrow both will be far better prioritised. I’ve found since having acute pancreatitis some years ago that if I’m stressed I seriously don’t want to eat, it’s like I don’t want stress/food combo to heighten chance of another horribly painful attack (it was worse than childbirth!). Good news is tomorrow is start of summer holidays here so whilst the children will get up at 7am as per usual I will not be rushing!

Spudulica17 · 02/07/2025 00:03

That doesn’t sound good @Poisonwood, but hopefully tomorrow less stressful.

Spudulica17 · 02/07/2025 19:44

Oh dear I really fell off the wagon today, worked from home and absent mindedly cracked through a load of sweets and biscuits 😥

tomorrow is another day - back at it then and will make an effort to exercise on my lunch break
