Why are you NOT on injections?

Just curious why other people have chosen not to go down the glp 1 route.

For me I have just heard one too many horror stories. I am extremely grateful to be in a healthy (albeit overweight) body that I just can’t take the risk. I have a random phobia of vomit/nausea. Genuinely couldn’t think of much worse in terms of side effects.

Also, I have lost significant amounts of weight in the past. And once I get going I don’t find it too difficult. So I know I don’t really need the medication. I can keep it off too as long as I don’t use food as a crutch when going through a difficult time. The weight I’m losing right now al came on during my divorce process. I lived off lasagna and cheese boards. Just to cheer myself up. Luckily I am in a better place

And id rather have the money each month (thinking of treating myself to a cosmetic treatment and it’s more justifiable in my head if I think I’ve saved money from not spending it on wl jabs).

I really dont think poorly of people who choose medication. Just thought I should say that.

I'm really surprised to read this! I'm sorry to hear it too. It may actually be the injections themselves then! I know a lot of people have experienced hair loss.
Hopefully our hair will go back to normal soon 🍀

I’m certain that it was the actual medication in my case and have spoken to a healthy number of people who have experienced the same. I’d have probably stayed on it a while longer if I hadn’t had such a bad experience with the hair loss, but I’ve spent more time and money fretting about fixing that, than actually losing weight on the jabs! Never mind, you live and learn ☺️ x

ackarackaru · 09/04/2025 21:11

I don’t agree with putting medication into your body if you can avoid it. This includes even paracetamol. I won’t have Botox etc either.

it’s just human’s way of trying to shortcut a process because they can’t be arsed to do the work IMO. I say this as someone who is overweight, although not hugely. If I stop eating shit and move more, I’ll lose weight. I’d far rather do that than inject some unknown into my body. I did enough damage as a youngster smoking, drinking, taking champix to stop smoking! I am older now and know more, and after the covid jab fiasco I no longer trust our government and the medical authorisation procedures.

You can't be putting a foreign substance in your body without a long-term side effect.

Appreciate for some the trade off is their immediate health but I'm lucky in that if I stick to a meal plan etc then the weight comes and stays off. I know I can be a right greedy get and will suffer for it, but that's on me and I have to eat like a saint the other side of it.

Er yeah you can. People are putting all sorts of medications into their body with no negative side effects. Do you honestly think EVERY medication has a bad long term side effect?
And unless you eat nothing but organic whole foods I’ve got some bad news

Yerdug · 09/04/2025 21:19

Because it's a short term fix, because the weight will usually come back in (and then some) if you dont change habits and mindset, because it made me smell funny, because I didn't poo for two weeks, because I can't afford it, because we don't know the long term side effects and we don't know if these could be more serious than being over weight long term.

Meecrowavay · 09/04/2025 21:35

I don't think my issues with food stem solely from hunger/simple over indulgence. I resonated with what James Corden said on why it didn't work for him and realised I would be similar.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 09/04/2025 21:47

My BMI was just under 30 when I started trying to lose weight so I wasn’t eligible without lying which I wasn’t comfortable doing. I decided to join a gym instead, figuring the cost was similar (pricey gym) and it was a decision well made for me.

I have managed to lose a stone and a bit after thinking it was impossible in my 50’s so I don’t need them clearly.

It may have been easier and I probably could lose more with injections but it is expensive and I am not a fan of taking meds for anything generally.

Lazycatsitsonthemat · 09/04/2025 21:50

Hair loss, the way you can tell if someone has being doing it from how they look afterwards, and not in a good way. Because I don’t believe it doesn’t cause damage to the body, and definitely doesn’t teach good eating habits.

tobee · 09/04/2025 21:51

Sustaining the cost.

If cost wasn't an issue I'd be able to find out if I was also too fearful. I'm used to going directly through my GP as well

MilnersGold · 09/04/2025 21:52

I can't afford it. I'm astonished how many people can in this cost of living crisis. We both earn a reasonable wage but after all other expenses it's not an option

The bnf says Alopecia is a common side effect of mounjaro.

KRoo22 · 09/04/2025 22:02

I had an allergic reaction to mounjaro and Wegovy did not suppress my appetite so had little impact on snacking between meals which is my issue

ClearPinkPlum · 09/04/2025 22:08

I am very fat, but can’t afford it sadly,

I don’t eat takeaways and biscuits and cakes, or even drink alcohol, it’s really crept on and odd bits of ill health have meant I don’t exercise enough I guess, and eat too much good food

QueefQueen80s · 09/04/2025 22:10

ScratchyMcScratchface · 09/04/2025 20:50

I’ve been told they are not suitable for me by my psychiatrist due to my long history of Eating Disorders.

Yes I know someone on them with history of ed and she is loving the control she has, is getting to a dangerously low weight and has collapsed twice with kidney pain.

Yep, I know I would stop eating completely if I was on them

Bakedbeansandtoast · 09/04/2025 22:13

Someone close to me was given GLP1 in it's first go round 16 years ago to treat diabetes. Their gut has never been right since - certain foods they can't eat, constant bowel issues.

zeibesaffron · 09/04/2025 22:17

A close friend’s DD was on MJ her sickness was so bad she was in A and E with dehydration. They gave anti sickness medication and a couple of bags of fluid. Dr on discharge said to my friend that her DD was the 3rd case he had seen in the past 2 days. He advised caution as the more people are taking it the more side effects they are seeing.

So as painful as it is it’s exercise and diet for me! I know it is only one example but I truly don’t know what the long term effects are of this ‘wonder drug.’

SmoothEncounter · 09/04/2025 22:23

The unknown long term effects. I already have several intolerances so don’t want to risk mucking up my system any more than it already is.

I guess if I was severely/morbidly obese, the balance of risk would be worth it, but not in that range.

Iwilladmit · 09/04/2025 22:29

Iloveeverycat · 09/04/2025 19:08

To lose weight I just cut out sugar, biscuits, chocolates and snacking between meals. Works for me every time. I don't need an injection.

Edited

Oh right then - now I know it’s “just” that, I’ll be a size 8 in no time 🤣

I keep hearing about this “Ozempic look” but don’t know what it means - can anyone give me an idea? Apart from hair loss by the sound of it!

Flidina · 09/04/2025 22:42

I've had a mini gastric Bypass, and have lost 7 Stone in total, however the rapid weightloss has left me with a large stone in my gallbladder, which is not bothering me at the moment.I was tempted to try the injection to lose the last bit of weight, but was advised by my doctor , even if I could get it ,not to because it might cause problems with my gallbladder.

TheShiningCarpet · 09/04/2025 22:49

for me its the digestive issues - I have anxiety linked to these kinds of things and it reared its head with menopause and after a very stressful work situation. For my own mental health I cannot take something that will impact my digestion - I just cannot cope with the stress of it and this creates anxiety and a vicious circle arises.

I would actually be a perfect candidate for it (although it has never been suggested to me by my GP) and I know it is very successful for diabetics although the long long term effects I am not familiar with but what I have read concerns me.

It is a crutch (and a welcome one, don't get me wrong) but if you stop taking it the weight will come back on especially if you do not change behaviour etc.

TheShiningCarpet · 09/04/2025 22:51

SwanOfThoseThings · 09/04/2025 19:22

My understanding is that they work by reducing your appetite (or 'food noise') so you eat less - I couldn't eat less than I do now without literal starvation. I regrettably seem to be programmed to hang onto weight.

I get you - I think we are designed to survive the coming apocalypse, I could live off my own fat for months

DoNoTakeNo · 09/04/2025 23:13

Because it slows the flow of solids through the gut and that alone will conflict with my meds & probably cause me to die.
There are other pharmacological reasons but that one is the one I’m bothered about.
A pity because I am fat.

FNDandme · 09/04/2025 23:15

Regardless of reasoning weight loss requires a mindset not just eating less / moving more or pharmaceutical / medical assistance.

Same here, especially with the combined effects of menopause and disability. I’d probably still give it a go though, if it was free or much cheaper.
