I’m 5 fucking stone overweight.

Huge, uncomfortable, feel disgusting, look disgusting, it’s make or break now.

Ive made up my mind.

im almost through the menopause, the 5 stone has attached itself throughout perimeno over the last 4-5 years.

I have tried I have failed multiple times. I can starve, weight watchers, slimming world, MFP, fasting, vegan, vegetarian, meal plan, walk more, move more… I’ve done them all, everyone of them over the last 30 years. I’m still huge.

Peri meno has proven impossible, utterly utterly impossible.
I could drop a stone doing any of the above over 4-5 months before hormones fucked off. Now with very careful changes, the weight WILL NOT BUDGE at all no matter what I do. Not even one LB.

MFP is a great little APP, I get on with it well because I like the nutritional information that it gives.
I like to track my nutritional intake, cholesterol etc, calories & fat secondary. I have 1200 cals a day,

I went to bed last night starving, I’m hungry now, feel like shit.

Pffftt and GAHHHHHH! I hate being so overweight and overwhelmed with the mammoth challenge ahead of me every single day.

What can I do??????

Omg same. I wish MNHQ would stop threads like these appearing in chat and AIBU. They're really triggering for people with EDs and there is a really busy weight loss chat board and a separate weight loss injections board for people who want to talk about them. So irksome

100% this. ^ It need moving to the 'weight loss board' really. That's what that board is for! (For threads like this - about weight loss/dieting!) If this thread is not gone from CHAT (and in weight loss where it belongs!) within the nest 15 minutes, I'm hiding the thread. Fucked off with seeing 'MOUNJARO! USE MOUNJARO!!!!!!!' FFS! Hmm

.

BookishType · 02/01/2025 19:49

The reason people come onto threads to recommended mounjaro is because it has worked for them when other diets and lifestyle changes have not. We should be shouting it from the rooftops in my opinion.

Ottersmith · 02/01/2025 19:49

Isn't the whole calorie thing bullshit anyway? Give up sugar. I don't think fat is the problem, it's sugar. Then go low carb if you can (sugar is a carb)

SilenceInside · 02/01/2025 19:50

No this thread should not be moved. Bizarre to try to enforce what people can discuss and respond to on threads in Chat or AIBU.

Ladamesansmerci · 02/01/2025 19:51

1200 is only enough if you're a short, sedentary woman (like me lol).

Bulk out meals with veggies. Look at volume eating. Have plenty of protein. Fats feel counterintuitive but they're actually really good for fullness. I mean healthy fats, ofc. Try to eat mostly whole foods.

I personally used to miss breakfast, have a 300 calorie lunch, then save all my calories for evening meal, as this stopped me night snacking.

soupfiend · 02/01/2025 19:52

xyz111 · 02/01/2025 19:46

Target weight in lbs x 12 = daily calorie target. 1200 is too low. My 7 year old eats more than that. You'll end up binging as you'll be so hungry.

This is ridiculous as a blanket statement, my maintenance is 1500, if I want to lose 1lb a week I need to cut to 1000cals a day, thats how it works

I could manage on 1250 which would be 0.5lb a week, give or take but you need stamina to keep going at such a slow pace and it gets dispiriting. Luckily I only have a few lbs to lose now.

It isn't bizarre - don't be ridiculous

HQ frequently move threads to different boards. Eg, private school fees threads get moved to the private education board, harry and meghan chat gets moved to the royal family board, during the pandemic all covid chat got moved to the coronovirus board.

It is policed all the time.

SilenceInside · 02/01/2025 19:55

Chat and AIBU shouldn't be policed like that, especially when it's one or two posters out of lots of people happily posting, who are triggered by the content. Just hide the thread, that's an option available to everyone if you don't want to see it.

Doodleflips · 02/01/2025 19:55

You say you’re plant based. Are you eating clean, or plant based meals, because most of those are absolutely full of shit.
also, you may not stay full on a plant based diet, I know I couldn’t do it.

Rycbar · 02/01/2025 19:55

Of course you’re starving. Your calorie deficit is far too big.

i highly recommend following Bethany Dobson or Sarah Catterson Coaching on Instagram. They explain weight loss in a completely easy and sustainable way.

they also do not allow their clients to be on anything like 1200 calories!! They both have paid levels but I just follow them for free and have learnt so much.

Of course you won’t lose weight - your body is in starvation mode. It sounds like you’ve yo-yo dieted, which means every time you restrict calories your body will respond by piling on more weight as soon as you stop.

It isn’t difficult. Don’t be hungry. Eat three big meals a day, no snacking. Meals should have no carbs except veg (avoid too many root veg), plenty of protein and some fat. No sugar. Try to eat 30 different plant foods a week. Have fermented foods for your gut. Don’t calorie count but watch your portion size.

It will take time to reset your metabolism and balance your hormones but it will work eventually.

Mygosh · 02/01/2025 19:56

I'm with you, struggled my whole life with weight.

People suggesting weight loss injections...there is high evidence that people put the weight back on when they stop the injections, think about 60% go back to original weight.

Surgery is drastic but something to be considered, I am seriously thinking about this myself.

In the meantime, a nurse suggested drinking warm drinks when hungry, it works to a degree. I like fruit teas.

Best of luck 🤞

It isn't just one thread though. There is so much weight loss chat on here. And that is why they made a weight loss chat board.

100% this. ^ I have the weight loss board AND the weight loss injection board hidden because I got fucked off with seeing threads about MOUNJARO!!!! and WEGOVY! and SAXENDA! (Mounjaro is the most common one people shout about.)

So I don't expect to see this shit on CHAT. It needs moving to the weight loss board.

It was obvious people would start banging on about fucking Mounjaro within the first few posts. 🙄

BeavisMcTavish · 02/01/2025 19:58

I’ve not read down the thread, only your OP, so this will almost certainly conflict with some suggestions you’ve already had.

what works for one doesn’t always work for another - there are no rules as some would have you believe.

Loosely 1lb is 3,500 calories.

The only thing I can add (having lost 5st myself 5 years ago) is that it has to be every day for weeks and months. You wouldn’t catch me anywhere near a drug as how can you sustain that longer term. This is a change in lifestyle forever else you’ll yo-yo right after.

i averaged 1st every 6 weeks and keep within 0.5 st.

remove any notion of weekend treats or ‘cheat days’ from your mind - they simply don’t exist when looking for deficit and that’s where most come unstuck as a Bottle of Wine on Saturday night has enough calories to unwind the previous 4-5 days. Forget fads like protein this and carb that - you can sort that a few months down the line.

you need to research your BMR calorie requirement (and base on being inactive unless you’re genuinely doing 3+ miles of walking 3-5 times a week) and work out how to remove 500 calories at least every day but in a way that makes it sustainable forever.

Don’t remove nice things completely - change then. I did things I could sustain forever - which included:

no butter - low fat spread
1x thin bagels instead of 2x toast
Small thin vegetarian pizza not large thick crust meat.
tomato based curry (rogan josh) not cream (masala/ korma)
no fizzy drinks - flavoured water.
no snacks between meals other than satsuma (ignore the nonsense of bananas having no points!!)
jacket or salad instead of chips
no oil in cooking, use a spray and air fry.

there are literally tons of things to go at and often energy between brands varies hugely too.

imporyantly, until you’re a pro in a few months, weigh EVERYTHING. People thing 30g of cheese is alot, but it’s barely 1.5 square. Most people under estimate by nearly half - Nutracheck is 100 times better than MFP in my experience and has a built in forum for motivation, your mileage may vary.

I didn’t even look at carbs or fat. You can work out that after shedding calories..

good luck.

How do you eat "normally, eg when you are not on a diet? How did you eat the last two weeks of December?

I have a friend who says she can not lose weight as it is either famine or feast with her, she is either super strict ( and long term not sustainable), or says it does not matter what she eats anyway and then eats takeaways and drinks alcohol and lots of treats. Not saying in between.

Not saying you are like this

But it's hard on the body. And you need quality nutrients and that is hard to get with 1200 cals a day

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 02/01/2025 20:01

100% this. And you don't know what long term damage is going to be caused by them

BookishType · 02/01/2025 20:01

Of course you won’t lose weight - your body is in starvation mode.

Is ‘starvation mode’ even a thing? I’ve always thought it’s a nonsense. My sister was pre-diabetic earlier this year and was told to go on a ketogenic diet and stick to 800 calories. She lost lots of weight, very quickly (and has kept it off). Surely if ‘starvation mode’ was a thing, very low calorie diets wouldn’t work.

Yes, because the root cause, which was being addressed by the medication, stops being addressed. Realistically, most people need to remain on a low dose for life - as people with type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or certain types of depression and other mental health issues may need to do.

MrsAga · 02/01/2025 20:03

Oh OP I’m with you, same stage in life, same excess weight (although I’d be happy with 4 stone off - I think that extra stone would be too difficult) Also gone on over the last 4-5 years. This is my last attempt at diet and exercise before going down the injection route. I know I have to stop night time snacks, so sat here with a herbal tea. I’m also trying hypnosis to see if that helps.

mollymazda · 02/01/2025 20:03

1200 is way too low for someone with such an amount to lose. I am a big advocate for 'feelings' and i bet there is something blocking you! find that and you will find your solution

No it's nonsense, anorexics still manage to lose weight ( from experience) on zero calories. Until the body gets very depleted indeed.b

SilenceInside · 02/01/2025 20:04

Evidence shows that people on average put some of the weight back on after stopping taking the medication. Not all of the weight lost, and it's on average so individuals will vary. The weight loss even after regain is still clinically significant. Which is why these injections have been approved by the MHRA. The studies had people on placebos so it may well be people who know they've stopped and are actively looking at maintenance will do better.

All other weight loss approaches have the same issue with possible regain. It's not specific to the injections, and the evidence is beginning to show they are actually more effective.

If you don't want to take them no one will make you. But it's very reasonable for people to suggest them and to discuss the benefits.
