When are we starting our weight loss

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all well.

We are approaching the new year and as I've always did every year , the "new year weight loss diet" , I've been on diets for as long as I can remember. I've struggled with my weight all my life.

Usually I start the new year diet the day after new year. At this stage I be shoving everything I can into my mouth to get it all ate before I start my "diet" (have failed them all I'm the biggest I've ever been)

I've had enough of my weight and my awful eating habits. My anxiety is the worst it's ever been, my confidence is at the lowest of all lows. Self esteem is non existent. I feel terrible.

I want to start tomorrow. Or is that silly? Or am I just using excuses to start in the new year when really I could wake up tomorrow and make a change.

When are you all starting?

I'm starting in january. On January 7th when DD goes back to school and i can go back to the gym. I'm also doing dry January which will help with the calories. Good luck!

socks1107 · 27/12/2024 19:20

I'm sort of starting. I haven't gone mad over Xmas and don't intend to start.
I've lost lots last year so this year is the last 2 stone

tobehealthy · 27/12/2024 19:24

@socks1107 how did you lose the weight?

I’m starting tomorrow too. I got down to normal BMI early
lasf year and kept it off until the end of the summer when weight started to creep back on again. Not sure how much I have to lose as I’ve just got home from visiting relatives for Christmas but am going to weigh in tomorrow morning and have planned tomorrow’s meals already.

I am going out for dinner at a friend’s house on NYE but will just enjoy that as a one off and get back on plan on Wednesday morning. I figure better to start tomorrow and have a blip rather than keep overindulging for another 4 days before I rein it all back in.

And like @EternalSunshine19 am also going to do Dry January and up my exercise game in January too. I fairly recently completed C25K but haven’t run for a few weeks and I don’t want to waste all that effort by losing my stamina again!

Showmethefood · 27/12/2024 19:33

Started my diet today as I’ve already put a kilo on over the past couple of days. Lost a stone and a half at the beginning of the year and have roughly maintained - but I’ve noticed the bad habits returning. Lots of snacking on crisps and chocolates. Want to lose another stone at least. Would be helpful to hang around on this thread for accountability 😊

Goldenmemories · 27/12/2024 19:34

I think any time you're ready to make changes is a good time to start.

I've had a few days of wanting to do it but self sabotaged a few times. Exercise has been great, 20k steps a day and regular weight training but I've been making bad food choices.

This evening I had a chicken salad and 2 satsumas for dinner. Yes I still feel a bit hungry but for the first time I'm OK with that because I know it's what I need to do to achieve my goal

MyStylish40s · 27/12/2024 19:38

I started Boxing Day, and I only really started overeating on the 21st. I lost a stone this year, and there is no way I’m putting half of it back on because of Christmas. It was too hard to lose it in the first place!

I’ll probably have another blowout on New Year’s Eve, but will be back to being strict the very next day. I know other people would consider me to be miserable, but I don’t see the point in overdoing it, and then having to face losing it again

socks1107 · 27/12/2024 21:17

I lost it doing 18k steps a day and calorie counting. I also went swimming at least once a week

FLOWER19833 · 27/12/2024 21:43

I am starting properly on the 1st but not overeating till then, fit bit currently charging and will start walking 12/15k from tomorrow . I am going to weigh on the 1st , i probably put on around 5/6 kg since September and need to lose it before i put on more.

Gummibärchen · 27/12/2024 22:27

It isn't silly at all to want to start tomorrow, OP; in fact it makes infinitely more sense than waiting til the designated 'Big Day' of Jan 1 or 2 and triggering a panicky scarcity mindset as evidenced by binging the day prior, then witnessing a cycle of failure. As @Goldenmemories said, when you're ready to make changes is a good time to start.

catphone · 27/12/2024 22:49

It’s not even the new year yet and I’m already struggling about not eating any snacks/anything nice

tobehealthy · 27/12/2024 23:39

Thanks guys for the replies.

I'm definitely starting tomorrow. I can't sleep atm I feel that sick and full up. Eating rubbish makes me feel rubbish.

I seem to have a strong connection with when I eat poorly my mental health declines? Does anyone experience this?

I'm joining you tomorrow! Fed up of feeling too fulll & headaches

suki1964 · 28/12/2024 01:09

My diet starts with every meal

If Im lucky, every meal is balanced and comes in as a calorie deficit

Doesn't alway work, but thats what I aim for, with a big pile of walking as well and it keeps the weight off

creamsnugjumper · 28/12/2024 01:22

Mine started early by accident as I've been sick with some horrid flu thingie and zero appetite.

I'm yet to jump on any scales, but I can feel I've lost some weight as I'm on 5'2 so even one KG is noticeable.

I'm planning to empty the fridge and do a big healthy shop, some good meal plans and go back to prepping on Sundays, instead of going to the pub!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/12/2024 07:30

I'm going to try to have a healthier few days and not drink now until NYE. It's been a really busy week and I have not been well. My plan all December was to do a whole30 in January, but I am not sure now, it's quite strict and I've been so unwell that maybe I need to be kinder to myself, but then it's not being kind to myself to eat loads of rubbish. So I am dithering over it! I'm still on recovery mode which means no exercise classes or running at the moment, but I'll be getting some gentle steps in with the dog.

Katrinawaves · 01/01/2025 20:56

How are people getting on?

i came down with a virus a couple of days after starting which meant I was tucked up in bed by 8pm on NYE and not in the mood for cooking a big NYD family meal - hence have stayed on the wagon for 4 consecutive days now. And am so over dieting! Wish we could just be dedicated and strict for a week and get all the weight off at once!

Showmethefood · 01/01/2025 22:45

Hi @Katrinawaves 👋 I hear you. I started my diet last Friday and have stuck to it rigidly. I also wish I could just get all the weight off at once as I feel I’ve worked so hard already 😂😂. I especially find myself craving a take away and am spending most waking moments trying to resist for a bit longer.

ANEC · 01/01/2025 23:12

Both myself and hubby will be starting our plan (calorie counting) on Monday 6th. I feel utterly disgusted with how much weight I’ve put on, not just over Christmas but in the last year. Everything is bulging and if I don’t do something now I’ll be up another size before the months out.

Good luck to everyone xx

Monday 6th for me too! I've downloaded the Nutracheck app which will hopefully help keep me in a calorie deficit and I'm planning on 3-4 gym trips a week as well as C25K. I have had enough of feeling uncomfortable in my clothes and am so ready to lose this excess poundage once and for all!

Katrinawaves · 11/01/2025 13:13

Just starting my third week now and so far 9lbs off. Still another 28 to go sadly but at least it’s going in the right direction.
