My friend on her social media has just posted a comment about a workman as its a hot day and said 'hes sweating like a fat lass on a hot day in a chippy with no money' my friend is thin and im very fat(and losing weight) im sure she has other overweight friends on her social media who would be as offended as i am, or is it me? Am i right to be offended that the implication is that all fat people are fat because they eat chips and junk food or that fat people drip with sweat? Im just so offended but do understand she meant it as a joke but im sorry i cant feel the same about her anymore

I dont get offended easily
I think now as the decades have gone on people cant joke and mean nothing by it any more.
It seems like a lot off people will find something to get offended by this day and age.
I dont think your friend means all fat people eat junk at all she said a joke shouldent have put it online because this happens people take it to heart and think its about them..

MrsPuddle · 27/08/2024 15:34

People choose to take offence...since you dont have to....so choose not to and stop taking everything so personally.

drunken · 27/08/2024 15:36

It's a pretty old and outdated 'joke'

I wouldn't get offended by it, just think a little less of the person that posted it.

TransformerZ · 27/08/2024 15:37

You're offended because you're fat.

Don't apologise for your change in feelings towards her. I find muting that person for a bit (or permanently!) helps when people post things that I don't like or find appropriate.

Ouch true but ouch I`ll send op some aloe vera because she just got burned.

Tell me it's the school holidays without telling me it's the school holidays 😆

Justleaveitblankthen · 28/08/2024 07:21

I would judge her as much on the "joke" circa 1977 as much as anything else 🙄

Has she been YouTubing Bernard Manning?

CbeeGeeBee · 28/08/2024 11:36

It’s just not the sort of thing a grown up puts on social media, is she 12!?! It’s unkind OP, you’re right.

Aye, she's fat but losing weight. You, however, will find it more difficult to lose your cruel and shitty attitude.
Oh and also, unkindness is a burden to humanity.

Edingril · 28/08/2024 11:45

Sure it's about 40 years out of date and no points for originality, but it doesnt take much to offend some people I am sure you have lots of other friends to replace them

Josephinesnapoleon · 28/08/2024 11:45

Why does everyone always say I’m fat but losing weight, it’s seldom true. Let’s face it.

and this is so extreme. “im sorry i cant feel the same about her anymore”.

this is really about your feelings about yourself. Of course she’s not saying all fat people eat chips and sweat.

You obviously don't know how humans survive.

SnufkinsSpiritAnimal · 30/08/2024 13:21

I would say this is more about working class, insular attitudes, something this person will have absorbed growing up, very much a 'carry on laughing' mentality.

Apparently, nowadays, we can't say boo about it because they are a protected species, even though they generally out earn what remains of the flailing middle class. Culture currently praises these behaviours and most crap on the market is designed to...amuse them (most likely the UK's largest spenders). Even classical radio and literature has been steadily dumbed down so as not to offend them - BBC docs, anyone?).

There, I said it.
