Using housework to burn calories?

I am currently losing weight, logging what I eat and working out. However my fitness watch still encourages me to be active and so I created the option to have a "housework workout" so I just tap it on my watch and then blast my housework whatever it maybe, trying to keep up the pace and it appear I burn quite a lot of calories doing so, often more then walking as I am up and down stairs, on and off the floor, bending over, picking up heavy stuff and so on.

Now I know this isn't a replacement for structured exercise and I do go to the gym for cardio 3 x a week and do strength training and walking a different three days and then I have one rest day which I am still trying to be active but I have no planned activity.

Anyone else do this and use housework to boost calories burned? If nothing else I find it quite motivating to get stuff done and the house is looking better!

Absolutely! I am trying to keep my activity levels high and, aside from gym and steps, I am doing a lot of tidying and buzzing around the house. The house looks better, I am super organised and it all counts as activity.

Glad to hear it isn't just me! I am finding it quite motivating and the house looking good boosts my mood!

I love a tidy house!

It can also have a really big impact on your total calorie usage - non-exercise activity (NEAT) is a bigger component of total daily energy use than structured exercise for most people.

Exercise is important for lots of reasons, but for weight loss it won't help if you spend the rest of the day moving very little. Which is fabulous for those of us who aren't good at sitting still!

@everycowandagain Yeah I am finding trying to hit my targets on my watch by whatever means possible! I did read that people who move more day to day have more fat loss from structured exercise so although that isn't my natural way to be super active I am trying to lean into it to up the NEAT as you say!

You could wear hand or ankle weights whilst leaning to burn extra calories or put some tunes on and sing along to burn extra from singing and probably clean harder.

My house is always spotless when I’m dieting.
