Should I pay for ultrasound privately so I can finally take Mounjaro?

Hi all,

I've been told by my GP not to take Mounjaro until I've had an abdominal ultrasound scan to rule out gallbladder problems.

I don't actually have the symptoms of gallstones or anything like that but I have had dull pain in my upper right chest and back. It was traced to food poisoning but the GP wants to make sure it isn't gallstones. She has referred me for an ultrasound but it has been 2 months now and no letter has come from the NHS with a date for an appointment.

In the meantime, I am getting fatter and I have Prediabetes. I desperately want to prevent type 2 diabetes and don't want to have to go up to a BMI of 35 before they will even refer me for weight management.

I have a BMI of 30 and am happy to pay for Mounjaro privately. The question is, should I just do a private ultrasound too? There are places that offer appointments within 2 weeks. They send you a report on the same day.

Should I just do it?

I saw your other thread too, I don’t think anyone can make this decision or tell you what to do, it’s your health so it’s your decision? If you can afford a scan have a scan? However if you already have pre diabetes did you not get given any advice about nutrition in the meanwhile, as there are ways of eating and diets you can follow that reduces your risk of diabetes and gallstones and avoid continuing gaining weight. The time to start that is now, not once you get the injections. What happens if you do have gallstones what are you going to do then? You could plan now for that out come just in case?
