Huel/attempt to lose weight

HAF1119 · 19/04/2024 22:33

Moving the thread from previous location as we were using an old thread!

A few of us either currently using/considering using Huel to aid in weight loss and just discuss anything from flavours to struggles as well as a weekly weigh in for those who want to do it

Anyone welcome if considering using Huel in anyway for a weight loss journey

Let's go for a weekly weigh in on a Friday so we aren't doing it after possible weekend cheats!

My start weight in Jan 2024 20st 1lb
Weight at weigh in 19/04 18st 7lb
Target weight 14st

Does anyone have any thoughts on which meals are best? I feel like the ones with grains would be healthier in general than the pasta dishes even though the calories are the same

Fluffywithteeth · 23/04/2024 18:34

@NarnianQueen yes is say so - I’d go by the GI - pasta will for most people release sugars into bloodstream more quickly , bigger insulin spike etc

You're probably very correct that the grain ones will be superior nutritionally than the pasta ones... I've mostly done the pasta ones however as pasta is one of my biggest loves and at least I'm having less than before!

I've been using the chocolate, ready mixed shake as part of maintaining my weight loss. I prefer to eat 'real food' usually, but the Huel is great for when I know I'll only have access to poor food choices otherwise e.g. at some sports events.

Fluffywithteeth · 23/04/2024 20:46

Oh sorry @NarnianQueen ! Did you mean of the Huel meals? In which case just go with the one you fancy - they’re all v similar nutritionally x

NarnianQueen · 25/04/2024 17:51

No that made sense @Fluffywithteeth 😁

HAF1119 · 26/04/2024 07:43

Weekly weigh in!

Start weight Jan 2024 20st 1lb
Weight 26/04 18st 6lb
Goal weight 14st

Weekly change = 0

And I've been so good I'm just stagnant weight for the past 3 weeks!

that is so frustrating @HAF1119 I bet you’ll have a big swoosh next week. Are you measuring as well? Keep going - it will definitely come

so last week I was 72.6, this week 71.25 , so not massive but something and still eating properly at the weekend - which starts tonight!

Well done! That's a good loss I think :):)

It's a little frustrating but I have a couple medical issues that make it hard to lose weight - so the main thing is I didn't gain!! I'm still going on the 1200 max 1500 cal a day and I'm sure at some point the elusive 18st 5lb I'm waiting on will appear!!

Well done on the loss so far!

For your weight the calories seem very low, maybe up them for a couple of days a week and see how that effects your weight? Have you been dieting a long time?

Huel is good, we use it as a high protein snack as both DH and I are very regular gym goers, it's very good at satisfying hunger and adding protein to the diet!

HAF1119 · 26/04/2024 15:35

@2andadog I have, I started Jan @ 1200-1500 cals (I occasionally do 1800 if eating out etc) mostly trying to stick to 3 meals a day as I used to quite often skip breakfast and not eat until about 12 then mostly just have a carb heavy lunch and dinner. I gained a LOT of weight when I started Depo contraception and am also on a AD which can cause weight gain. The bulk was over 2 years a 5 stone weight gain without eating any extra since starting Depo. Waiting for the last one to run out then having a contraception break and hoping that may help.

My metabolism is really slow even before the injection as I used to do weight watchers but would always hit at least 5 under the points they would give me or I would gain weight!

When I started on Huel I'd sat at 18st 7lb for 2 weeks and was trying to mix it up just to kick start it again! I did lose 1lb in first week but again now nothing! I am concerned if I go over on the cals I will go up in weight as I'm really not the biggest eater, I'm just having healthier cals now than before when they were unhealthy cals

I don't want to go down in cals though so probably will just keep going. I don't know if I should consider fasting a long time between eating, or eating little and often, I need the metabolism to work for me! At the moment I'm having 3 meals pretty much 9am 1pm 5pm and just green tea and water between

I'm open to thoughts and ideas!

Which powder do you use - white or black? Do you have 1 scoop or 2 per shake? How do you find it on 3 products a day?

The reason why I ask is that I think Huel is great in that I never get hungry using it. But OMG, it gives me stomach and toilet trouble if I have two or more fuel meals a day! I was using the black powder. Is white any better to avoid it?

RacingLine · 26/04/2024 16:21

we've done pretty badly this week. I had a number of work commitments that involved lunch and dinner on a few days so I daren't even step on the scales this week. I'm absolutely sure I've put on a load of weight!

Dp has done quite well - he's using Huel at lunch time and then cooking a normal meal for dinner and he's cut out the booze which must be helping him. I don't think he wants to do the scales yet which is fine by me - he's got a huge amount to lose so I think he will see it coming off in his clothes rather than on the scales

We are using the ready made drinks for now though they are expensive - we just could not get on with the powder. It never tasted as good as the ready made drinks

I tried the cinnamon one this week and it was super sweet - I prefer them to be a bit less sweet like the coffee one

RacingLine · 26/04/2024 16:22

I also did read that it can impact your stomach - we haven't seen much of an impact here but I started having their greens in the morning and after a few days of that, my stomach couldn't take much more

I'm on black - I do black 2 scoop morning, then a hot huel meal lunch, then normally a 400-600cal meal dinner of whatever I like but still healthy (e.g. roasted veg/sweet potato and chicken breast/egg or salad etc)

The stomach couldn't take 2 shakes a day... I had to go to the hot meals and it settled!

The ready made ones do taste good :) I have a pack of the banana ones and I do get sick of the powder ones and have a ready made one every 3 days or so as a 'treat' instead of the powder! Powder I've found okay if I add some crushed ice to it, but still not quite as nice!

Had the coffee one yesterday and it was much nicer than the others which I find a bit too sweet

Have ordered some of the meals to see how we get on

Fluffywithteeth · 28/04/2024 10:39

@RacingLine yeah I find them too sweet too. I mix chocolate with plain (⅔ plain, ⅓ choc ) and that is much better. I also find making them and leaving them in the fridge for a good few hours or overnight makes the consistency much better

RacingLine · 28/04/2024 11:32

Ah that's a good idea - thanks for the tip!

Fluffywithteeth · 03/05/2024 07:38

Uurrgh! Only down 0.10 this week 😞 so am 71.15 . At least I haven’t gained. Am hoping it’s a temporary blip! How’s everyone doing?

RacingLine · 03/05/2024 08:11

Badly and we are going away for the weekend 😂

My daughter baked a Black Forest gateau that called to me from the fridge every day till I had to eat it. Having adult kids living with you is no good for dieting!

We are going to start again on Tuesday in earnest

I have ordered some more of the pot noodle type things as I'm loving them for lunch and they really fill me up

HAF1119 · 03/05/2024 15:37

I am not happy! I'm 18st 7 so

Start weight 20st 1lb
Goal weight 14st
Current weight 18st 7lb

Weekly difference = +1lb

I did 1200cal a day... but I did yesterday get a cheesecake home from my sons cookery... which he decided he didn't like and I thought it would be wrong to waste it... so I had far too much cheesecake 😂🤣☹️

Oops 😬 😬
