I've not been to the gym for yeeeears but have decided to start going to boost my weight loss. I've booked in tonight but feel so anxious about it! It's a gym I haven't been at before and I know once I'm in it'll be fine but I feel nervous. Any top tips??

Don’t go and do a You Tube work out at home.

SkaneTos · 25/03/2024 17:13

No advice, but I'm rooting for you!
It's normal to feel nervous, but like you say, it will be fine.
Have fun!

Honestly, no one will care about you - in the nicest way! Everyone had to step through the doors the first time and, at my gym at least, everyone is supportive and welcoming.

Enjoy!

... thats a really helpful comment

I joined a gym a couple of months ago and can completely empathise.

ds told me, ‘don’t take this the wrong way, but nobody cares what you’re doing, they’re all there for themselves.’ He is completely right and no one bats an eyelid at what anyone else is doing.

Get down there and enjoy yourself

well done on making the appointment... thats the first step over and done with. you've not been for years, but that implies you've been in a gym before, so you will have some recollection of it all, thats in your favour.

gyms are brilliant places.. you get to see alsorts of different types of people and can massively motivate you.

you dont have to wear fancy gear, you dont have to be dolled up, you are not there to impress anyone.

let us know how you get on.. and well done

So I went and I loved it! It was absolutely fine. I've booked in again tomorrow Smile

Thank you for the update, OP!
Sounds great.

Remind yourself that how you feel is okay, perfectly normal, and that it will pass. It's no different to any other discomfort you felt before doing anything new or something you've not done for a while

Also keep in mind the reason for going, what you want from it

I started going to the gym late last year, and felt self conscious about it because I've been a gym person. All anyone cares about is how many sets I got left or whether we can take turns while the other person rests

What is it you're anxious about?
