Hi
I just need to vent
7 years ago I lost 5 stone ...great , looked good, felt good .
Then life got in the way .
With menopause and covid I have regained my 5 stone .
I feel I'm just over being on the merry go round of weight loss and have been adopting a PMA ......that was until Today ....I've seen a photo of me taken recently and really I'm just a blob .
This is the one thing in my life that just beats me .
I am a capable woman, wife, mother, grandmother but weight just beats me every single time 😳

I hear you. It's so hard. I envy naturally slim people so much (and secretly hope they will all get menopausal and fat like me 😂)

notanothernana · 13/02/2024 09:41

I am fascinated by this, and this is NOT a boast. I am menopausal, nearly 60 and I have gained 1lb since my wedding day 30 years ago. I feel I eat well, yes cut down if I do put on a pound or two and it goes (yes, slower than it used to). I drink alcohol, like chocolate.

Is it genetic? Am I lucky? I have always been active, is that it??

OP, I'm sorry you're finding it so tough.

To answer the question asked by @notanothernana above, I do think you're lucky in one sense @notanothernana , i.e. you probably don't have the desire to over-indulge. So you can enjoy chocolate etc, because you naturally do so in moderation, and as you say, you get in control of it as soon as you gain a pound or two.

I understand this mindset because it's how I feel about alcohol. I never want more than a glass or two of wine and my friends who drink more are envious that I can 'take it slowly'. But I'm not showing restraint - I just don't want more, I don't like the feeling I get after more than 2 glasses so I stop. I have zero cravings for alcohol ever.

I am very different with food and I constantly have to work hard to stay just within my healthy BMI. If it weren't for vanity and concerns about my health, I would be enormous. But I am just about anxious enough about my health (there's diabetes in my family) that I try and work hard at it. I've just managed to get myself down from 11.4 stone down to 10.7. I need to do this every couple of years and it's a conscious effort. The fact that I enjoy exercise helps somewhat, but I can still gain weight while exercising if I'm not watching myself.

Sadly for those of us who like to eat a lot, there is no magic answer - people who are thinner eat less and are willing to spend their lives eating less, except in a few rare medical cases. We just all need to decide what we care about most.

Thank you for replying and listening.
I just feel so down about my situation.
I feel so pathetic that this is one thing in my life I cannot get under control .
I have been on antidepressants for 30 years because of it .

I think it's vary hard to lose weight on some antidepressants and they mess with your metabolism

Moier · 13/02/2024 11:01

I'm 65 and obese.. l was always slim.. walked everywhere.. went to the gym.. went dancing every weekend ( Disco non stop dancing .. fast dancing.
I had PCOS / Endometriosis.. hysterectomy age 38. HRT still dancing/ gym etc.
Then l got thrown under a bus( attempted murder) broke both hips/ pelvis.
Loads of other medical conditions.
I put on a stone every year since then.. I'm now 19 stone.5ft 7.
All l can really do is swim.. which l do once a week.
I still eat the same.. if not less.
I just " don't/ can't move.
We all have different metabolism.
I just don't know what else l can do.
I still take as much care of my appearance as always.

Maverick66 · 13/02/2024 11:29
