Lost weight on low carb now high cholesterol

So a recent blood test showed that my HDL cholesterol is 65 which is apparently too high. It must be my change of diet. I’ve lost two and a half stone on low carb higher fat diet and kept it off.

I can eat less red meat but as I have to keep carbs low I need to get some calories from fat.

im 50 post menopause. where do I go from here?

Has anyone else had this problem?

Think it depends if it's your HDL or LDL

Vegetus · 19/01/2024 06:49

Yeah you need calories from fat but the fat doesn't have to be from red meat, why not olive oil, nut butters, fatty fish and avocados? You don't need the saturated fat in beef.

HDL is fine anyway if that's elevated. Mine is always above the reference range in any blood work I get done but it's never mentioned by a Dr because it's the good cholesterol...

Whats your ratio OP?

AnnieCookWriter · 19/01/2024 11:04

Well done, for losing the weight! That's a really big achievement, post-50. High cholesterol can be hereditary. I have it too, from both sides of my family, and diet doesn't successfully regulate it for me, so I have to take tablets. But I only take them every second day, and that seems to work well enough. I'm NOT a drug advocate (I practice vibrational medicine, in fact) but like one of my friends recently said, if a tablet will stop her from having a stroke or a heart attack when nothing else will, so effectively, she'll take the tablet. Check whether its HDL or LDL, that's abnormally high, and talk to your doctor. S/he will give you guidance, and do your own research too about cholesterol, to see what has worked for other people as alternative to drugs.

Your numbers are in a different form to the way mine was given. But if I understand it correctly the ratio is calculated as total / Hdl and the lower this is the better.
Your ratio seems to be about 3.7 which is actually quite a good ratio. Anything less than 5 is good. But please don't take it from me and speak to your doctor.

soupfiend · 20/01/2024 09:41

Oh dear I cant work that out! Another poster says your ratio is 3.7 which would be very good

The HDL is the good cholesterol and you want it to be high. Your level of 65 looks great.

I think it is your LDL (bad chloresterol) which is a bit high at 155 as ideally this should be below 100. To reduce this you need to decrease red meat, fried foods and baked goods with saturated fats.

lljkk · 21/01/2024 20:02

OP, your numbers are good not bad.
Read more here: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/cholesterol-ratio-calculator#how-to-calculate

Your have a ratio of total cholesterol to HDL which is 3.7. Which is good & just above the ideal threshold (at 3.5).

Your have a ratio of triglycerices to HDL which is 1.2. This is in the ideal zone (<2) which is what your sheet of results could be saying.

Cholesterol ratios: How to calculate them

Cholesterol ratios assess a person’s risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary artery disease (CAD), using blood test results.

It is not just about the ratios though and the OPs LDL does look high at 155.
