Feeling fat and frumpy at 39, ready to get fabulous for 40

Recently turned 39 and I've completely lost my way the past few years. Rather than keep beating myself up and self sabotaging (eating more crap), I want to focus on myself this year so by the time I turn 40, I'm feeling fit and fabulous. Anyone else feeling the same or want to give each other a bit of support? Not just about weight loss but general wellbeing ✨

Me. And I'm much older! (58). I was pretty fab at forty, and I lost weight for 50 but now I'm a size 20 and just don't want to get to 60 like this. I'm struggling with chronic fatigue and know that my weight isn't helping with how tired I feel.

I feel like I've yo-yo dieted my way though menopause and I just need to focus on health and wellbeing rather than 'dieting'. I think I'm going to eat up the Christmas chocolates 😁and then try and cut sugar and bread out of my diet for a start!

goodintentionsonly · 02/01/2024 19:46

I'm the same @Hatty65, I want to lose weight but it's about wellbeing and health and just looking after myself again. When I have a lot going on or a lot of stress in my life, I just completely lose my way and put myself at the bottom of the pile and then I end up feeling completely crap all round. I've bought one of those foldaway treadmills to get my steps in because if the weathers crap, I'll just put it off. Like you, I've done it before and felt so much better so it's time to commit to it and to myself!

Yes - I'm 40 in the summer. Have a toddler and a 5yo and have lost my way! Happy to cheer you on.

Plan is to lose a stone, get a better haircut, new glasses and sunglasses, refresh my makeup and restart Pilates.

I managed to look clean and tidy pre kids, I can definitely do it again.

Hatty65 · 02/01/2024 19:58

Excellent! I'm vaguely giving myself the rest of this week to get sorted out with a plan/get rid of junk food. We've been to the in-laws for several days and just got back this evening. I'm promising myself three days peace and rest then a determined weekend of New Start.

Pastelrainbow · 02/01/2024 20:14

Yes! I turn 40 later this year and I would love to be feeling better about myself. Aiming for 2 stone off by the summer (ideally 2.5). Started today-just trying to increase exercise and cut down on eating rubbish! I work from home (sat at a computer) and it has been a killer in terms of biscuit eating and lack of exercise. I need to try and see WFH as a bonus that gives me more time and flexibility to fit exercise in around work (fingers crossed!!) Really need to change habits and mindset this year so I can start my 40s feeling a bit more fabulous :-)

goodintentionsonly · 02/01/2024 20:16

@Dontdeclutterthemagic I think a milestone birthday is a good 'excuse' for a shake up and gives you a goal to work towards. Having young kids definitely takes it out of you doesn't it. What are you planning to do to lose the weight? I'm going to follow slimming world again as has always worked for me before

I WFH home too and set up my laptop on top of a couple of boxes today so I could stand up during a zoom call. Was better for my back and I tried a bit of stepping while I was working too - felt better than sitting!

I think it definitely helps if you've got a few buddies to help cheer you on and commit together 😀

@goodintentionsonly I started a new job last year and got into bad snacking habits both in the office and at work so I'm basically just eating less and hoping. I've put on half a stone since Sept.

I did calorie count today but don't usually manage to stick at it for long.

madeinmanc · 03/01/2024 07:22

I think I'm going to eat up the Christmas chocolates 😁

Maybe think about biting the bullet and just chucking them in the food compost caddy, they are only going to harm you.

goodintentionsonly · 03/01/2024 09:34

I can't really do much exercise until kids go back next week but clean eating as of today. Back to my usual brekkie of boiled eggs. Has anyone tried intermittent fasting to kick start weight loss?

goodintentionsonly · 04/01/2024 17:55

How's everyone doing? I've had two days of clean eating and feel much better for it. Still scrolled a bit at bedtime but my new book arrived today so going to give that a go tonight. Have booked weekly PT sessions once kids go back next week so am feeling good at the moment. I was really hungry earlier so I boiled up some eggs rather than eating biscuits. My mindset is finally back in the right place and I know no one else can do this for me, only myself. Have also tried to get kids back into a routine at bedtime as I was getting zero time in the evenings so feeling positive about that too (lots of other things in my life outside of my control are completely shit! So just trying to focus on the things I can do make myself feel better)

I’ve had three fairly good days. Less snacking and healthier snacking, getting out for more walks and trying to do some Pilates classes on YouTube. Feeling ok (although a bit hungry). Going to weigh in on Tuesday morning and see whether this week has made a difference on the scales x

CattingAbout · 04/01/2024 20:46

Can I join?

I'm 40 rather soon but, inspired by another thread, I would like to kick off my forties by getting my shit together. I have 2 lovely young DC but have lost myself a bit since having them.

Dontdeclutterthemagic · 05/01/2024 10:11

I got caught out at work by bacon sandwiches and cake . . . Am generally snacking less though.

Feel exhausted with the new year, kids and weather, not got started with the exercise yet but I do have a haircut booked (first for years!) so the improvements are starting.

Also I've worn perfume all week - amazing what a lift it's given me!

goodintentionsonly · 05/01/2024 10:32

I think getting the wheels in motion is the main thing. Whenever I do an all or nothing approach I inevitably fail but just trying to create good habits seems more manageable. Have started with the healthy eating this week and will start with exercise next week once kids are back at school.

Had a Thai takeaway tonight as had promised kids but I went for the stir fry prawns and veg and some brown rice and a chicken satay skewer. Normally I'd pile into the noodles, prawn toast, spring rolls! Feel pretty pleased with that. Hope everyone's feeling good as the first week comes to a close 🙏🏻

Also 39. Turning 40 in 2.5 months. Overweight as f.
I would love to have at least become more active by then.

I feel super frumpy.

snowlady4 · 06/01/2024 22:49

40 this year too! Anyone doing anything nice to celebrate?
I have a holiday in May so I'm focussing on losing a stone by then.
Also want to declutter my shit tip of a wardrobe so I have room for lovely new things- a more stylish wardrobe for 40 year old me!
Then I think, do something with my hair, but not sure what yet!
Bring it on!!

Pastelrainbow · 16/01/2024 06:32

So 2 weeks into the new year and I have lost 9lb in weight (most was post-Christmas bloat!) and booked a summer holiday which gives me something to work towards! ☀I have taken up morning Pilates sessions, lunchtime walks (which are just lovely) and am trying to cut out unnecessary snacking. How is everyone else doing?

NeptuneOrion · 16/01/2024 10:18

I have signed up to SlimPod so I am not weighing myself. (I don't even have scales where I am).

I have been walking a lot more and eating a lot more veg.

I am also feeling more positive too.

Hopingforbetterluck · 19/01/2024 17:48

I’m 40 this year and absolutely do not want to feel like I do now when I turn that age! After five pregnancies in the last four years (only 2 children though) I have gone up and down in weight more than I have in my life and since dd was born a year ago all I seem to have done is eat and drink.

2 stone, ideally 2.5 to lose by my 40th in June but really want the bulk of it off by the time we go on holiday at the end of May. Only 7lb down so far. Does anyone else feel like it comes off so much slower the older you get!

NeptuneOrion · 19/01/2024 21:40

Yes the old metabolism has definitely slowed down!

I have now joined the gym too. 🏋️‍♀️

I really want to get healthier and be able to follow my eldest around at adventure playgrounds.

I am sorry for your losses. I hope you got some good support with that.

Hopingforbetterluck · 20/01/2024 11:07

@NeptuneOrion thank you.

Yes exercise is definitely needed to feel fitter. I’d love to join a gym but feel like I’d struggle to get there.

I’ve been trying to do a lot of walking and on the days I don’t I try to do a Joe Wicks workout which absolutely kills me so that shows how unfit I am!

Trying to talk DH into getting a treadmill in the garage but he’s not keen. We have a rower so maybe I should start with that.
