@Theredjellybean thats nearly 2kgs! Well done! And I hope you manage to get some relaxation in Italy ☀️

poorpaws · 10/04/2024 07:52

@Theredjellybean wow that's a fantastic loss. Im really pleased to hear your dad is doing ok and have a lovely time in Italy (I envy your trip, I love Italy).

Well aren't you lot being little saints with both food and exercise. I really must start an exercise programme soon (I've been saying this all year).

Yesterday was my usual mix of dog walking and being healthy during the day but in the evening I failed again. I was just so hungry and instead of making some toast or cereal, I had two granola bars and a packet of crisps 🙈. Result, I'm half a pound up this morning so I've somehow got to claw that back during the week. I didn't start another Easter egg though because I knew I'd eat it all so a little restraint was shown.

It's going to be quite nasty weather this morning, cold and rain but we're still doing a short dog walk. I've got a lazy afternoon planned as DP goes home at lunch time. He's a lovely man but as a loner I look forward to Wednesday afternoon and all day Sunday when I don't have to see or speak to anyone but the dogs.

So my plan today is not to overeat and try to be sensible. I'll be wishing I'm with @Theredjellybean in Italy🇮🇹 eating pasta.

@thenewaveragebear1983 You are doing very well with both diet and exercise, keep up the very good work.

I ought to try overnight oats again. I made some a few years ago but they were thick and gloopy and it put me off. Perhaps I didn't make them properly and I can't even remember what I did so I'll look up a recipe and maybe try again because I love the idea of them.

poorpaws · 10/04/2024 08:04

@effiesgoldwig we all have bad days, don't put yourself down just try harder the next day. You will get there, we all will, we just need some time. It's a bumpy road and some of the bumps are just too difficult to navigate and we fall off the wagon splat into mud!

Which reminds me (warning tmi) last week I had what the kids call a secret wee in the bushes. I fell over backwards and my bare butt was covered in thick gloopy mud and there were nettles, say no more.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/04/2024 08:12

@poorpaws I take my overnight oats very very seriously. My fave options are:
40g oats with a muller lemon Greek yogurt, frozen raspberries. I had a passion fruit on this on Monday and it was a work of art.
40g oats with skyr yogurt or fromage frais and frozen fruit (I like mango chunks and raspberries) - if you’re feeling decadent, a little swirl of peanut butter?
or if you’re making with milk - 40g oats, about 125ml milk and a scoop of chocolate protein powder. Again with berries/ fruit.

it’s much nicer with yogurt, I find a small pot ample for a really thick oats and if need be you can add a splash of milk when you eat it, and stir it in.

I really do think protein is your key to the snack attacks. I am a total convert, I never wanted to fall for the marketing and resisted protein supplements for such a long time, but (and I don’t use loads!) I just have added a scoop of protein powder or a protein yogurt to my diet, daily. I try to get 100g a day in total, which is a lot less than the gym bunnies claim you need, but I honestly can’t believe the difference in my overall energy levels and my satiety. I still like a sweet treat mind, but by having extra protein at breakfast and lunch, I don’t snack or graze at all all day (which when wfh is quite a miracle some days) and I am also noticeably building lean muscle now (after 10 weeks of 2 hiit workouts a week). I still have off weeks (see last week!) but overall I think it’s helping me.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/04/2024 08:13

@poorpaws one of these, Aldi and Lidl do their own versions as well

poorpaws · 10/04/2024 08:17

@thenewaveragebear1983 sold! Thank you. I shop in Aldi so I'll put it in next weeks shopping list. Yours sound so nice it made my mouth water and I love raspberries. I'll V assume the oats are just regular Quaker?

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/04/2024 08:21

I tend to go for the cheaper ones that aren’t as chunky, but not like ‘instant oats’ or anything. Just basic value oats.

triplecheeese · 10/04/2024 08:23

@thenewaveragebear1983 you're making me hungry. I am bad for grabbing a croissant (or two) on the run on office days because I never have time in the mornings, so this morning I'm merrily on the train munching a Deliciously Ella bar... 450 calories!??!?!??! Fml. Should have had the croissant.

I never really got on with overnight oats either because porridge doesn't fill me up - if I have porridge I'm starving by 10:30. So sounds like protein is the key!

@poorpaws oh no your poor bottom. that would happen to me! I made a lovely baked potato for lunch yesterday, added all my sensible toppings then grated a load of pepper on it. Except it was salt not pepper and it was inedible.

@Theredjellybeanso glad to hear about your dad and also that you've got away. Wishing we could all be with you for a pasta party!

Got some tricky work coming up today. At least all that adrenaline will burn off the Ella bar 🤣

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/04/2024 08:24

Oh, and the other benefit is that you can make 3 days worth in advance so it just takes all the thinking out of it- my friend does 5 days worth up front but woah, that’s a bit hardcore for me 🤣

poorpaws · 10/04/2024 08:44

@thenewaveragebear1983 thank you it all sounds great. It does seem like a lot of calories though unless you have a tiny portion. I'm going to make it on Monday night after the supermarket shop and see how I go. I've checked the freezer and I have a full pack of frozen raspberries 😋

OP posts:
poorpaws · 10/04/2024 08:48

@triplecheeese oh no, I bet I would have eaten the potato, I love salt. Strangely I hate pepper and that's why I can't eat all the "posher" ready meals, they are full of pepper. Hope your tricky day goes well.

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/04/2024 09:17

@poorpaws mine is about 400 cals but I had skyr on top as well as yoghurt in it, and my breakfast includes my milk for tea x 2 During the day

and, without wanting to teach you to suck eggs- define - lots of calories. It certainly isn’t more additional calories than a couple of cereal bars or 2 slices of toast and spread, which if it prevents that creeping in as a pm snack, overall your intake is same/lower. Ultimately you know what works for you and we’re all different, but it might be worth a try just to see.

Well done @thenewaveragebear1983

Hope are able to rest @Theredjellybean enjoy the pasta.

I'm still about, food not fantastic but could be worse. A few treats but plenty of nutritious food too. Not weighing at the moment.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/04/2024 11:31

@triplecheeese without wanting to sound like Goldilocks 🐻 🐻 🐻, have you ever heard of Resistant starch? Basically, some starchy carbs are less carby/starchy depending if they are cooked, and also if they are cooked and then cooled, before eating. Porridge is much less readily absorbed if it is eaten ‘raw’ than cooked - which could be why hot porridge doesn’t fill you up as much as overnight/raw oats. Potatoes and pasta have more resistant starch if they are cooked and eaten cold, than if eaten hot.

poorpaws · 10/04/2024 11:47

@thenewaveragebear1983 blimey I didn't know about that.

I just have a sachet of oats (ready measured) with skimmed milk (no sugar) and blueberries every day. I worked out the calories ages ago (can't remember the total) and it seemed quite low for breakfast. I always have black coffee with no sugar too. But I really fancy trying the overnight oats again. I love toast but two slices and I'm still hungry and want more so porridge seems the best option for me. Other cereals seem to leave me very hungry all day.

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/04/2024 12:31

Every day is a school day! I think the resistant starch thing is similar to fibre, it slows the absorption and as a result, slows down the insulin response to starchy carbs, which keeps you feeling fuller for longer.
breakfast cereals are odd aren’t they? My dh loves a cereal, keeps him going all day whereas for me they are just like sugar bombs and i will be starving within an hour. I’m ok with toast if I have a savoury topping to slow it down a bit, like cheese and/or ham toasties… 😋

This is so interesting! I didn't know this. Definitely anecdotally agree tho. I am the queen of potato salad and it's certainly more filling than mash which I could eat by the bucket.

the overnight oats are going in the fridge tonight!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/04/2024 14:19

@triplecheeese 😋 potato salad - I used to make a really delicious one with homemade mayonnaise and mustard and top with crispy bacon ….. <not sure if the resistant starch could balance that out >

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/04/2024 20:57

I weighed in today, it had to be done - 1.5lbs up, which is actually pretty good as I was 6lbs up last week when I avoided weigh in, so have technically lost 4lbs+ this week. I’m now 3.5lbs away from my stone award. I’ve been 2lbs from it before Christmas, and again before Easter…. So I WANT IT NOW! I’m bored of dithering!

going to be super strict this week, and count calories and generally stop being a tit and get on with it. End of the month? Definitely doable! So I’m on it.

I’ve had a good day today, I didn’t have a post weigh in binge and have come in under calories, so that’s a good start. Weekend obviously looming, so I need to plan carefully. I don’t think I’m going to drink this weekend either.

triplecheeese · 12/04/2024 07:33

amazing work @thenewaveragebear1983 good luck for your ass kicking april week!

I've had a few sensible days myself so am hopeful Monday weigh in will be kind to me. I can't exercise on office days cos my day is packed too full but I'll get a workout in today to take me to 4x a week, which is the goal!

poorpaws · 12/04/2024 08:05

@thenewaveragebear1983 You are very determined, you want it, you'll get it.

After a good start on Monday and Tuesday it's definitely downhill for me. I've been eating well and healthily but it's the sugar cravings I just give in to. I will be well up on the scales this week after the loss last week.

The weather doesn't help, the bad weather really gets me down and I turn to chocolate to make me feel better. I am an exceptionally cold person, in that I've never met anyone who feels the cold like my daughter and me. I have poor circulations (most likely raynaulds disease) and this doesn't help so when I'm icy cold and it's raining I take comfort in chocolate which on weigh day is not at all comforting.

Next week won't be easy either as I've got a couple of meals out planned. It's my SILs birthday and we love a meal out together.

It's Friday, cafe day today. We know all the regulars now and really enjoy lunch there on Fridays (I say "all the regulars", ha it's a small cafe run by one lovely lady so there aren't so many regulars). We found it at the beginning of June last year and have never missed a week except the two weeks holidays it closed. It's a lovely little treat and the dogs are allowed in.

Anyway I'm waffling again so have a good day everyone.

OP posts:
triplecheeese · 12/04/2024 09:47

Oh @poorpaws enjoy your cafe day today. It sounds wonderful. I've always loved a good cafe, reminds me of rainy afternoons with my much missed grandma, having tea and cake from her beautiful collection of teacups. I have my own teacup collection these days... but the cake's not as tasty as it was in the 80s.

TalkToTheHand123 · 12/04/2024 12:01

Hi all. Did a shop yesterday and not much bought to lead me astray so should be a decent few days ahead. I've managed to keep off alcohol for a few days too which hasn't been easy 😮x

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/04/2024 20:24

I had a a good day today. It’s Friday and to be honest, I could take a glass of wine on, but no- I’m on the Sprite Zero instead.

annoyingly, my dh has just decided that it’s finally time to eat his EASTER EGG ffs 🤦‍♀️ so I told him he has to sit in the other room. I may be unreasonable but I don’t care.

I finished my 10 week programme with my PT today and I sent over my final measurements and wow- I actually lost 8lbs in the 10 weeks and I also lost 9cm off my waist, which is crazy really! So I’m really pleased with that, and I’m definitely going to keep up the dumbbells workouts. I ran a super fast 4km today (in 19 minutes!) and a 1.5km cool down, and I’m sure that pace is down to improving my strength so much. I have just signed up for a charity midnight/sunrise mountain hike as well, it’s in May. Really looking forward to that.
