Fuck. Just realised I’m going to need a seat belt extender

I’m going on holiday next Saturday and checked to see if I’d need a seatbelt extender, I will. I’ve been kidding myself that I’ve not put on too much weight when the reality is 2.5 stone in a year (I was already big!). Not sure what I’m looking for, I’m too embarrassed to tell anyone in real life.

How can you tell?
I was convinced I would as have re-gained all my weight plus then some but was pleasantly surprised to find I was OK.

bellac11 · 13/08/2023 13:17

Depends on the airline

I was a size 24 with Iberia and didnt need one

MissDemelzaCarne · 13/08/2023 13:23

I’m a size 24 and was fine with EasyJet.

sonjadog · 13/08/2023 13:24

How have you worked this out? What size are you? I am size 20/22 and have never needed one.

bellac11 · 13/08/2023 13:27

I needed one many years ago on Ryanair, I was only about a size 20 then

I dont understand how people who are quite a big size say have never needed one, perhaps you just got lucky with the airline.

amymel2016 · 13/08/2023 13:29

I’m going with Ryanair and having read around the seat belt is 30inches and the seat back is 17inches. I used a belt and 47 inches won’t go near me when I’m sat down. I’m a size 20/22, 5ft 5 but carry almost all of it around my middle.

Ok so I fly weekly

EasyJet great

Ryanair almost needed one last week
Size 22

Some people buy them online before they go
Some people discreetly ask the air hostess for one when getting on the plane

I feel your pain xxxxxxx

bellac11 · 13/08/2023 13:32

OP a lot of people will need them, particularly as its Ryan air, I wouldnt worry

ive read threads on here saying that if you buy them online and come with them, you're not always allowed to use them, so I didnt bother (I dont need them now), dont waste your money or get worked up about it, its ok

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 13/08/2023 13:38

As someone who has needed them on some flights and not on others,

You might need one, you might not, if you do need one

I PROMISE you

  1. no one gives 2 shits, they’re all worried about themselves.
  2. Some seatbelts are shorter than others, doesn’t mean it’s you
  3. You deserve to be as safe and travel in as much comfort as everyone else

IF you need one then 2 options

  1. You or whomeever you’re travelling with ask for one as soon as you get on and they’ll just chill hand you one
  2. Ask when a steward walks past and they’ll chill bring you one. No one bats an eyelid

do not buy your own online, many airlines do not allow them

No one cares or would even notice, some seats are small then others and it makes NO sense why but they are and even if you need one, you will be absolutely fine

PoshPineapple · 13/08/2023 13:45

Ryanair and easyJet are the worst offenders for seat belt stinginess, but I'm 5'5" and at my heaviest was a size 24-26 - I came extremely close once with easyJet, but managed to do the thing up at the last minute (had right bloody belly ache for the entire flight though, as I daren't undo it once I got it fastened 😂). Otherwise, I've always been fine so fingers crossed you will be too.

If you are worried though, why not quietly suggest to the greeting cabin crew that you may need one at the time you board the aircraft, They are usually very discrete and will quietly bring one to you, or hand you one there and then to take to your seat with you. It will save you the embarrassment of having to ring the call bell and ask for one once everyone else is seated (when you feel like the whole world is craning their necks, wanting to know what you want!)

amymel2016 · 13/08/2023 13:47

Thanks everyone, you’ve talked me down a little! I think I’m so gutted as it’s the first real life thing which confirms how big I am. I can happily go around my day, not thinking too much about it and kidding myself I’m not that big then bam! I’m too big for a airplane seat!

On my last flight I was a size 28 and very much apple shaped. No seat belt extender was needed.

Gizmosgremlins · 07/10/2024 12:24

Hi @amymel2016 can I ask how you got on with your flight - did you need a seat belt extender? Thanks 😊

amymel2016 · 07/10/2024 12:26

Hello! Nope, didn’t need one, I flew again a couple of weeks ago and didn’t need one either. I’m a good size 22 on the bottom now.

Thank you for replying. That's good news! I fly with Tui next week and was worried but this sounds reassuring. Hope you had a great trip.

Aspecialplaceinhell · 07/10/2024 12:32

Said kindly but how big are you?
My 6ft4 XXXXL wearing husband could do it admittedly a struggle but he was ok.
Please don't panic.
Can't tell you the amount of anxiety this causes me as I get it in my head and even as a 5ft3 size 22 I didn't need one.

Aspecialplaceinhell · 07/10/2024 12:32

Sorry I didn't see this was an old thread.

Spectre8 · 07/10/2024 12:35

I didn't need one for wizz air or easy jet flights but did for ryanair and I just asked as I boarded and it was fairly discrete. Also I don't care if people know and judge me.
